This is a special place in the Castro lexicon of restaurants.
A very large menu and most of it is well-prepared. Lots
of good people watching is a major plus.

I should mention that one young waiter boy was having a little
difficulty with his nylons; I was thinking that he should get
Joan Crawford playing Myra Hudson, to help him!

Always pretty lively, and has a unique mix of people. Deffently go there for dinner or breakfast. Burgers are good. The pancakes are some of the best I ever had.

I love this place for greasy diner food. They have a great selection and the food is quite tasty. The service is good and prices fair. What more can you ask for, except a great location? It has one of those, too!

Located in the heart of the Castro, Orphan Andy's offers good diner food at really good prices. The service is totally cool and friendly. I'd just recommend not using the "facilities."

Orphan Andy's is open 24/7!!

I read the review where the people had to wait outside. Well, duh! If you have been inside you know how small this place is. I know some people dont care how the server is going to get you the food, but trust me on a busy night with drunk people everywhere, you need the space to deliver the food. Besides this place isn't your repsite from the rain anytime you need it. Grow up. This is a diner. You are not the center of the universe. So, if someone wakes you up ,you throw a fit and write a bad review? I have ate here many times. The food is good, the hours are great. And the service could be better, you get what you pay for.

Pros: Food, Price, Hours

Cons: Parking, wait, more choices

I've been eating at Orphan Andy's for more years than I care to admit to. It has always been the policy that if seating is not immediately available, you must wait outside. Nor is Orphan Andy's the only establishment that has such a policy (e.g., Kate's Kitchen and The Pork Store).\r\n\r\nOrphan Andy's is your basic American short-order kitchen with average portion sizes. Depending on the cook, food quality can range from tolerable to very good. I can't recall when I had anything I'd call ""excellent."" Service can be a bit slow at peak times or if there's a rush when only one server is working.\r\n\r\nThe main reasons to eat at Orphan Andy's are: (a) you're hungry when everything else is closed; (b) you like to watch the rainbow of people passing by; (c) you like looking at the cute guys (and the occasional gal) behind the counter; (d) you fancy a Monte Cristo Sandwich and can't think of anyplace else that has it on the menu.

DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS ESTABLISHMENT! We all have our horror stories about outrageous service and this one takes the cake for me. My girlfriend and I decided to give Orphan Andy's a try on an extremely stormy and wet night. We entered the restaurant just ahead of a group of three guys. The restaurant was full, but there were three counter stools available. We told the group of guys to go ahead and grab the stools...trying to be nice. We then told the server/host that it's Okay, we'll just wait for a table. His reply, ""Well you have to wait outside!"" I smiled and laughed, because he couldn't possibly be serious right? Sad thing is, he was. ""It's our policy that we can't have people waiting inside the restaurant. We have to be able to get by with the food,"" he said. I was in disbelief, because there was plenty of room to ""get by."" He walked away. We stood outside in the rain for 30 seconds and then left. I was soooooooooo angry! I know we were in the Castro, but come on...were we really that threatening to his manhood? This place gives the Castro and the community a bad name!

Pros: Hopefully They Sell To New Owners!

Cons: Sexist Ownership/Servers, Rude, Rude Staff

.

Orphan Andy's restaurant always brings a smile to my face. The employees are always friendly and, in fact, entertaining in their banter with each other and regular clientele. The food is sometimes stellar, sometimes mediocre, but for the price you can't beat it. It's a great neighborhood spot.

PROS: friendly staff, great prices
CONS: unpredictable food

I went into this place with the notion that Orphan Andy's was the Castro equivalent of the Pork Store in the Haight. Long story short, it's not. The food is way more simple, the portions are on the small side of good, and the wait is rather long. There is, however, a wait for a reason. The atmosphere is what you'd expect from the Castro and would be a better late night spot than a breakfast/brunch place. I'd go back, but only if the Pork Store wasn't open...

Orphan Andy's is what it is and makes no pretenses to be anything else. It is diner with good basic food that is served at all hours at reasonable prices. One caveat: The kitchen seems to be hooked on mayo so expect a big blob of it on your hamburger unless you specifically request ""no mayo"" or ask for it on the side. I mean a BIG blob! It's a fun down-to-earth no-nonsense atmosphere place with friendly staff. There may be a wait at peak times, like after the local bars close at 2:00 a.m.
