A message from Huntington Veterinary Hospital

For purposes of clarity, I am not a "specialist". The "Message from Huntington..." on the left was written by the insiderpages and wrongly states that I specialize in certain disciplines. I cannot edit that statement. Only someone who is board certified "specializes". We do, however, offer many advanced procedures and nearly 20 years of experience providing among the best care available. The services listed are some of my strengths as a practitioner. If we discover your pet needs something we cannot offer, we will offer to refer you to someone who can. Thank you, Dr Gary White

Really impressed  4 Star Rating - Very good

I went to Dr. White before when he was with VCA. I have used other vets in the area, and haven't been all that happy so I thought I would give his new hospital a try with two new adopted (and sick) kittens from the Baldwin Park Shelter. I was very impressed with the appearance of the hospital and the friendliness of the staff. I had no wait at all (unlike both VCA and Dr. Domotor's where I ALWAYS have to wait at least 30 minutes). Dr. White was courteous and thorough in his examination. He did not immediately order blood tests (many vets do on kittens) telling me to wait until they are a little older - I appreciated that.I have a lot of experience with cats and dogs (and lots of vets) and felt that his charges were right in line. Me and the kitties will certainly return!

Nickle and Dime You To Death!  1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

The new equipment was necessary and yes, anyone who goes to Huntington Veterinary Hospital will help foot the bill. Average wait for a scheduled appointment - 1 hour. EVERYTHING seems to require a blood test - ouch! Untrained staff will not hesitate to give out flawed information. If you want a vet who puts care in front of money and one who is not afraid to tell it like it is go down to VCA on Duarte road and see Dr. Shaw. She will take care of your critters without taking an arm and leg off of you! If you have a funny feeling your getting gouged at HVH - you are!!! Get out of there!

Knowledgable, Caring and Straight forward  4 Star Rating - Very good

Just what you want in a vet. One that looks you in the eye and gives you the news in clear concise language you can understand. One that treats you as an equal, not a subordinate. It's with some dismay I read the other critisims here. I also brought my parrot to Dr. K and yes, I agree he did a good job on her but he was FAR from cheap! In one week of "intensive care" which meant my bird sat in a cage in the back room and was hand fed, we spent over $3,000. People, grab a clue, you get what you pay for in this world and no ONE in ANY business is "doing you a favour" by charging less for some services. They ARE making it up somewhere. And the sad part is, in a business like this, they're making it up where you can't SEE it. Personally, I'm not rich, but I'd rather pay for good quality care and a vet who keeps abreast of all the latest techniques to treat my beloved pet than save $20.00 and take him to a sub-standard facility. Dr. White is *very* kind and whoever said he's in it "just for the money" is dead wrong. When confronted with our dog's cancer, he told us to go where we felt we were best served. And if that was his facility, great, if not, he still wished us the best. He did some treatments for us, but when the time came that we had to let our boy go, we went back to our old vet in Rhialto because we all had become friends there and it seemed more fitting for us. Even so, I received a card from Dr. White expressing sympathy for our loss- a wonderful hand written card. Sure, they had some scheduling problems in the those first few months, but as in any new business, things take time to sort themselves out. I think he's a quality vet with your pet's best interest at heart and would reccomend him to any of my friends.

Best of Care  5 Star Rating - World class

When the former vet, Dr. K, owned this hospital he kept his charges down because he used outdated equipment and unsterile conditions for surgery. His clients were generally unaware of this information, only taking into consideration that he charged less, and not understanding that he put the animals at risk.

Dr. White purchased the hospital, has replaced all of the outdated equipment with current state of the art surgical equipment, and is insistent that all is kept clean and sterile. He is one of the most knowledgable doctors in the state, and for those of us that care about our pets and their well being a blessing in disguise.

Dr. White is caring and compassionate towards the animals he cares for, is willing to communicate what is needed and will spend time explaining his procedures to the clients. He has helped several of my animals, and worked to the extreme to save their lives or maintain health. He is a skilled surgeon, and has performed several orthopedic surgeries on my dogs with outstanding results. In fact, I believe that he is the surgeon of choice for guide and working animals as well because of his skill.

Dr. White's charges are within the realm of other vet facilities, and those that are comparing him to the former owner do not understand the difference in the quality of care they will now receive. There is no real comparison, and clients that care about their pets will continue to see Dr. White with appreciation.

We are eternally grateful to Dr. White over the years for his continued support as a vet that is knowledgable in the latest techniques and medical practices. Thus, we will be his loyal clients and feel good knowing that our devoted pets are in competent hands.

Quite expansive  3 Star Rating - Satisfactory

If you don't have a insurance be prepared to get shocked when you receive the bill. The vet is good but the charge is like seeing a human doctor or more. Also, they itemize everything and then adds up to a huge sum.

So glad I went.  5 Star Rating - World class

I have an older little dog, and mind you this dog is my life, I took him to see Dr. White and he ran some test and found that my little guy has mild arthritis and has kidney issues, well I got all worried and thought what will I do. Dr. White explained to me my options and made his recommendations, we put him on new food to help his kidneys and we decided to do the Dental, which was a big thing because this is how my dogs kidneys got affected. I have a 17year old dog acting like a puppy again, God bless Dr. White, he really knows what he is doing and he has such compassion towards the animals. I was so glad I now have a vet who you can actually talk to. signed: Will never go elsewhere.

WAIT A SECOND!!!  1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

I was refered to the Huntington Veterinary Hospital by family. They told me the Dr. K was very good. I guess he is no longer there because I ended up a Dr. Gary White. After making an appointment for 09:30 on 01/04/08 and arriving early to sign in at 09:00 to fill out paperwork, I was mildly greeted by a male receptionist who had a very sour attitude.Going over the information, it is discovered that they have my dog's name wrong, my own name wrong, and they thought I was bringing in 2 dogs, not one. The male receptionist said he would make the changes. When he printed out the paperwork, I looked and seen that everything was still misspelled. I asked if it makes a difference that the names are misspelled, he took the paper to correct it. Even after this my dog's name was still wrong. Then I was greeted by the "Hospital Administrator" Andrea Bundesmass who was dressed in the lowest cut top I have ever seen in a veterinary hospital. (I guess there are no dress codes at H.V.H.)She began talking with me about "estimate" prices for what they were going to do. It ranged from physical exam, checking his ears for ear mites, capstar flea stuff, blood work, surgery, surgen assistant, over night observation, pain medicine. I did show that I had paperwork of the medical history of my dog. Andrea said this makes things easy and they might not need to do the some of the things on the list. They will call the last vet to obtain the medical report. She would call to let me know what is going to be done. This would cost around $300.00 to $500.00 (estimate)ALL I ASKED FOR WAS MY DOG BE NEUTERED!!After leaving an hour. I called Andrea and asked what has been done to my dog so far. She said that she would ask. She returned and said that he is in the middle of the physical and they are checking his ears. While disscusing this and the rest of the "estimate" things started sounding unsertain and unclear. I decided to stop everything and take my dog out of H.V.H.Arriving at H.V.H. I asked for my dog, I was given a $125.00 bill. On the bill was fees for physical exam $45.00. (okay she mentioned that) $5.00 for capstar flea stuff. (I still dont understand the purpose of this but, ok) and $75.00 for blood work. (Andrea never mentioned blood work)I asked to speek to Andrea about the situation and they told me that I would have to speek with Dr. White himself.Dr. White showed up irritated and asked whats the problem. I began the story with him and the major concern was the blood work issue. He said that I agreed to everything. I told him that I spoke with Andrea and that I was informed what has been done to my dog.I asked Dr. White what time the blood test was conducted. He said, "08:30" (I checked in at 09:00)I asked if I may have the printouts of the blood test results. He agreed and as he steped out he did tell me that I was not going to leave untill I pay. I responded by saying, "I am hear to pay what I was told what has been done."When Dr. White returned, he gave me the bloodtest printouts that does have the time on the upper corner. It read 13:30 and 12:00 Dr. White admitted that the times were an "error" (remember he said the test was done at 08:30) I asked if he thinks if this was manipulation and he said, "I dont lie!"He then said he was going to call the police and I told him that, that was okay with me. He stood there and never did anything.I asked for Andrea Bundesmann because I have been speeking with her in the beginging and that she will tell you, what she told me what was done to my dog and she did not mention blood work.Dr. White said that she is not the vet and does not know what is going. I did mention that she put me on hold and "asked" what has been done so far to my dog. This did not make a difference to Dr. White and he told me that she was busy. He then asked me that if Andrea had told me that the blood work had been done, would I have payed for it? I replyed, "Yes. of course." "That is illogical!" Dr. White said. (It's obvious what Dr. White intentions are and I do not need to continue) I am not a disgruntled employee nor am I depressed. I am very happy with my life and have a very good job that takes me across the country. My dog is a pure bred scottish terrier and I have taken him to another veterinary hospital with no problems.

Dr. White  5 Star Rating - World class

We have been a loyal client of Dr. Whites for 10 years. He has been so good to our dogs and to our family. We recently lost our dog Sophie due to kidney failure and Dr. White was kind and helpful with the whole sad proccess. We now have a new dog Kali and we will only have Dr. White take care of her as well. The staff is great and we feel lucky to have such a great vet right here in Monrovia.

Watch your wallet!  1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

New owners of a previously family and budget friendly pet doctor who ran a well organized business wants to give your pet drugs, specialized diets, and their owners 'spin' that for people who don't have their heads up their rumps amounts to, 'I can only speculate about how to treat your pet.' Shameless exploitation of pet owners guised in Spa terms like 'canine wellness.' Avoid this once trusted business. The office staff barely has clue how to assemble the plethora of overlapping charges into a justifiable bill. I witnessed two other clients questioning exorbitant charges. Last time I'll put my loved ones in their hands. Bad news.

I want to assure readers that I am not a former employee of this business. I am also quite happy with my life. I am an educated professional that knows when I am being ripped off. We miss Dr. K. and would never recommend this veterinary practice to friends.

Past and Present Veterinarians  5 Star Rating - World class

For 3 years I worked for Dr. K. and at the present time I am employed by Dr. Gary White at the Huntington Veterinary Hospital of Monrovia. (New Ownership) This hospital has undergone wonderful improvements since January of 2007.
Dr. White, the new owner, is caring, compassionate, and always present to his clients and staff. He has seen to it that he has the best equipment and a very clean facility. in which to help all pets brought to him. He is a skilled physician and believes in precision in what he does with our pets. The upkeep and cleanliness of the place and his equipment is astounding and it is a pleasure to work for such a caring, concerned and knowledgeable Doctor. Dr. White is an employer who is a just and king with his staff, yet he looks for accuracy in all we do. He is gentle but firm in his correction of errors made by others.

Class Act Veterinarian  5 Star Rating - World class

As a sales representative for a veterinary laboratory, I have met hundreds of veterinarians. There are LOTS of vets out there that I wouldn't trust with the life of any of my pets. I have seen what goes on behind their closed doors. I can remember visiting this hospital before Dr. White bought it. Dr. White has successfully transformed a once dark and dreary hospital into a facility where the health and well being of your pets is priority. I can say with complete confidence that Dr. White and his staff are a class act. The hospital is immaculate, the staff is kind and caring and Dr. White is one of the most knowledgeable veterinarians around. He truly has a kind heart and a love for animals.

Fantastic!  5 Star Rating - World class

I just had to comment on Dr White and his staff and let people know how caring they really are! I was saddened that the other people were so bitter with their lives to be so negative to a wonderful facility!! I highly recommend this Dr and hospital! I have taken my dog there for both medical treatment and boarding and have been very happy with the experience!

Five Star So Far...  5 Star Rating - World class

I was surprised to read the other recent reviews. I have absolutely loved my experience with Dr. White and his staff!
My previous Vet was always very condescending when I asked questions about my dogs health. She was very unresponsive and I always was left feeling like I didn't fully understand what was going on.

When my dog recently became very ill, the stress of dealing with such an uncommunicative and negative Vet was unbearable. I did not feel that my dog was in the best of care so I decided to visit Dr. White. I had learned through a previous employee of his that he had taken over this practice and was told that he was great.I have been so pleased with my decision to change.

Dr White is exceptional! I have found him to be extremely compassionate and goes to great lengths to thoroughly explain my pets condition. He actually pays attention to what I am saying and responds, so I know he actually listens. Being able to fully communicate with him has given me great peace of mind.
The facility is very nice and the staff is warm and friendly. Although some of them are still learning the computer and billing procedures, each one goes out of their way to know your pets name and to relate one on one with them.

Costs have been pretty standard, from what I've experienced in the past and he actually did not charge me for something recently out of consideration of the fact I had been in a couple of times this week already as my dogs condition is stabilizing.

At the other Vet, I was never in communication by phone with her, but on two occasion's, without even asking, Dr. White got on the phone to address an issue pertaining to meds.

I have nothing but praise for Dr. White and his staff and would recommend this facility with full confidence to anyone.

ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS YOUR $$$, NOT YOUR PET  1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST !!!

In the past, we have visited this place before for some routine check up, which went ok, nothing eventful.

SINCE THE RECENT CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP, IT HAS TURNED INTO A MONEY SUCKING MACHINE~~!!!

After receiving a postcard "Reminder" that our dog is due for 3 vaccination shots, we took her in. This turns out to be the worst experience at a vet ever.

First of all, appointment means nothing here. They WILL make you wait for at least an hour.

Then the nurse told us it's better to do a check up for $45, which sounds reasonable, so we agreed.

Then she says, the shot by themselves are 18 each, which comes out to $54, but since we are having the checkup, she will charge us $ 3 each, so the total becomes 45+3+3+3=$54.

When the Dr. finally got around to look at our dog, he ordered a blood test, for an additional $69, and then promptly declared that the shots are unnecessary.

Anyway, with all the tests and whatever they did to my dog, the bill end up being over $200.

This is for a checkup and a blood test that we did not need, and some weird flea medicine and collard that we did not want.

THEY ARE ROUGH WITH YOUR PET TOO~~!!!

It was ridiculous, just grabbing them like a piece of meat, which broke my wife's heart to a point that I had to step in and told the nurse and the vet to go easy on the poor animal!

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST !!!

Tramatic  2 Star Rating - Wouldn't recommend

I came from Florida and had a wonderful vet whom I as well as all the pets that went to him adored. When I went to this vet I had accupuncture done on my dog for her arthritis (which works wonders), like I used to have done in Orlando, and it didnt go well at all. 1st off her stuck her several times and she yelped, which she has never done, and he also drew blood. I asked him about this and he said it was getting the impurities out. In 3 years she never had that happen. Throughout the treatment she was uncomfortable with the pins in her. Usually they relaxed her. And a couple of pins had to be removed due to them causing her so much discomfort. Also when I left, quite frazzled by this time, I took my dog to pee outside and as she was squatting I noticed they left a pin in her leg. I removed it from her and took it back in and told them what happened. They seemed unconcerned and said sorry. Needless to say I wont go again.

PROS: They attempted to do accupunture
CONS: uncompetent

Dr. Kay is Great  5 Star Rating - World class

Although Huntington Pets specializes in care of exotic pets, I take my cats there and know that they are in good hands. Dr. Kay and his staff are extremely nice. They are very gentle with the animals and seem to really care. The prices are also very reasonable. The waiting room is cute, decorated with newspaper clippings and drawings/letters from area school children. I believe they offer a vaccination clinic on Thursday evenings, so if you're looking for a good deal on shots, you might want to call them to confirm that.

PROS: Extremely nice staff, short waiting times, reasonable fees
CONS: None!

Only Animal Hospital that I know of in the area that works with Exotic pets (rabbits, ferrets, rats, etc.) Great bedside manor. They understand that people can care for exotic animals as much as a dog or cat.

He's the best-est vet, ever!!! 5 Star Rating - World class

As a college student working a part time job, I've avoided vets for ever. For the most part, I take my cats to the humane society for their shots, spay/neutering and de-worming. The last time I visited a vet for the same problem I ended up with a $500 bill. I was dreading the visit. Surely I didn't go back to the same guy. The Dr. was amazing. The price was very reasonable. He didn't guilt me into expensive test, which the last guy did (apparently they weren't even necessary). He was friendly, knowledgeable, and honest. This is definitely the place I'll be taking my three cats from now on...

Pros: parking, knowledgeable staff, great vet, reasonable prices.,
Cons: nothing.

i wouldn't trust anyone else. 5 Star Rating - World class

I've taken 4 dogs, 2 cats, and a snake here since 1995. The staff goes above and beyond in their care of both pet and owners (especially frantic worried owners). The doctors are knowledgeable and openminded to alternative therapies. The facility is clean, neat and well-lit. I'm thrilled to take my pets here, and have no doubts as the quality of care they receive. Some people have generally healthy pets that need little if any medical attention. I've had a few of those, but also a few less fortunate ones, chronic allergies and arthritis included. Still, the staff here have been patient, persistent and flexible in addressing these problems and all of my pets are happy and comfortable.

Pros: amazing staff!

A Trustworthy Group of Vets & Staff 5 Star Rating - World class

I've been to many vets in the Duarte/Monrovia/Arcadia area and though many are good, I feel this one is the best! This staff is SUPER invested in the well being of any animal. The walls of the office are adorned with Newspaper clippings of the doctor and children; letters from kids thanking the doctor for taking care of their pets; and pictures of many of the patients and their families. I also got a great deal on my puppies Vaccinations. It's called a puppy package and for about $160 you get all sets of shots and neuter or spay, and a preliminary checkup. We've taken 3 cats and 3 dogs. The best part is that they also do grooming, though not many people know it. If you're looking for a recommendation for a vet, well this is the place to go.

Pros: Friendly, Vaccination Packages, Knowledgeable Staff
