If the title does not explain it, then go for a visit. Aside from Cheeseboard, Zachary's is where I would take any friend or visitor.

Not the same as Cheeseboard, but maybe equally as satisfying.

Zachary's is fresh pizza but very bland. I'd put it at the bottom of the list in Chicago. Pizza in Chicago centers on quality and taste to distinguish their pizza as the best. Zachary's has no taste. The sauce is boring and too tomatoe-y.

Every time I have been to this place, I experience a new item. And, the service is great....once you get a table. The price is perfect for what you get and you get the best. I have been going to this place for over 15 years and have never been disappointed. This place is worth going to for the best pizza and Italian food.

Chicago can officially take a hike. You've been outdone. There's no shame in that. You're pizza is good, but Zachary's is amazing. How do they do it? Is it because they're 100% employee owned? Is it because they sprinkle magic deliciousness into the sauce? I don't know, and more importantly, I don't care. Just keep the Spinach and Mushroom stuffed pizza coming my way. Don't like Spinach and mushroom? At age six I wouldn't eat a mushroom dipped in nacho cheese, but I would down this stuff like nobody's business. This is one of those places were you probably never change your order, because it's just too good to experiment with. If the pizza itself wasn't enough to convince yourself, just take a look around the walls at the non-stop reviewers singing its praise. But more importantly, are the super-fan posters that cover the walls. I guess when you're this good, you don't need to invest in art. Don't be afraid of the crowded mess inside, because Zachary's will let you order your food as soon as you put in your name. And that's important, because for safety sake, when you smell that pizza floating around, piled up on bar stools next to people's tables, a riot could break out at any moment. This is the kind of place you order a large, knowing you can only stomach half, but the cold leftovers are an art unto itself. With the delicious flaky crust, toppings dancing with the cheese stuffed (most importantly) inside, and topped off with rich piles of chunky tomatoes, you'll never forgive yourself that you didn't go sooner. So grab a slice, dive in with a fork and knife, or pick it straight up if you're brave, and your belly will reach Good Grub euphoria before you know it. See more at www.thegoodgrub.weebly. com

These days pizzas are in just about every corner. But you must taste Spinach & Mushroom Zachary's "Pride and Joy" at Zachary?s, it is so tasty; you just want to wish that it never finishes. It is a ?must visit? place.

Being from Chicago and an absolute foodie I was very interested in tasting what many (small minded locals) call "the best pizza ever".

The original shop on college ave is a quaint shop with Chicago signage but little other Chicago paraphanalia. So I approched with skepticism to its autheniticity.

They are famous for their spinach/mushroom cheese pizza (figures berkley hippes dont make the one with meat famous). I know that the spinach pizza is famous at Edwardo's in Chicago I began to wonder if this was stolen.....Since I wanted to make a true comparison to a classic chicago pie I chose to go with the Zachary special (Sausage, onion, green pepper, and mushrooms) a classic combo. I chose a 12 inch pie (medium) which translates to a small in Chicago.

Sticker shock wold be the best word to describe the price. Almost $26 for 12" pizza. 35minutes later I get the pie. The weight was good, the aroma was that of your local deep dish shop in Chicago. Garlicky sweet with a small hint of the pool of cheese that awaits.

Upon opening the box I noticed its authentic look. The thickness was a little shallow. The thick crust was sturdy enough to lift the pizza but the soft soggy bottom gave away its contents.

The first bite was reminiscent of th pizza shop in my home town. Also a local favorite.
HOWEVER that was where the Chicago in this "Chicago" pizza stops.

The sausage was OK, The sausage is key to the pizza as it creates a base of flavor to which the onion and bell pepper acentuate. So needless to say the follow up was about as shallow as the pie its self. The attempt to fill in the space with italian spices and chunky tomatoes in the sauce is failed attempt to feed hungry senses. The dough left an old sour taste in my mouth as the dough cooled. Any good pizza can be eaten just as well cold as hot. THere is just something mising....somekind of authenticity that I can not point my finger on.

Bottomline this pizza was WAY to over priced and MUCH TOO OVER hyped. True this may be the closest thing to Chicago pizza I have eaten in the Bay area. I have tasted better attempts in both Seattle and San Diego for much much less. The pizza was good and close to Chicago deep dish however its price, shallowness (less than 1/2 inch depth), poor dough, and lack of cratsfmanship keep me from saying "This is the best pizza ever". This pizza is far from it. While techincally baked in a pan or deep dish this pizza is far from thick. The pool of cheese was non existant. This is a regular pizza with a really tall crust.

I could get a pizza twice as good for $12 at Lou Malnati's in Chicago. They even sell them frozen. Ill be bringing some back with me when I go home. Better than the dissappointment I just ate.

Nice try Zacharys but you need more work. And shame on you Californians for tying to critique something you could not know anything about.

I went to visit my friend in Berkeley and asked her to take me to the best pizza place in town, and she brought me to Zachary's. And must I say, I was not disappointed! I'm more of a New York Pizza fan, but this place had amazing deep-dish pizza with a lot of tomato sauce! The Chicken Pizza and Spinach & Mushroom (both under Zachary's "favorites") were absolutely delicious! Although it was pretty packed (It was a Friday night), they had a very efficient waiting system where we would order the food while we were waiting so the pizza can come out right when we sat down!

Pros: delicious deep-dish/stuffed pizza, fast-as-possible service

.

They serve regular thin-crust, but you'd be a fool not to get the deep-dish. Best tomato sauce anywhere, delicious cheese, tons of toppings to chose from, but even plain old cheese is hardly "plain." There can be a long wait on weekend nights, but the place is fun and the servers are good, and its worth the wait every time once you tuck in. Calling ahead is probably a good idea on weekends. This place has been Zagat rated since the early nineties. You can even buy half-baked pizzas to take home. Probably not good for parties over 4; the place isn't super-small, but it's not big either. Personally, this is the best pizza I've ever had, well-worth a drive from Marin.

This place is hopping. Very, very busy. Call ahead if you want take-out. The crust is good, the tomato sauce is excellent, and everything is good. The deep dish pizza is very gooey and rich. Pesto is especially recommended. A high -quality pizza product, much better than a chain.

Okay. So Zachary's has got some amazing pizzas. Although they are still the best around, they haven't been as consistent as they use to be. Don't get me wrong though. When I want deep dish pizza, I always come here. I think they are way too busy and they have been rushing lately. Otherwise, I love this place.
It is extremely crowded almost everynight so you'll have to wait for a seat!

Yes, the secret is true. Zachary's isn't really Chicago style. But who doesn't like the deep dish here though anyway? A slice is a meal in itself. The crust could use a little more flavor, but it's not horrible. Don't get the thin crust, there's no point really. Wish they delivered, or at least could speed things up a little...

I've been getting Zachary's pizza's to go for years. The deep dish isn't something you can really call pizza -- it's a thick, hefty two and a half inch thick pie. One slice will slow you down for the evening. Yes, sometimes the fillings can be a bit hard to detect, because there's just so much dough and cheese and tomatoes and... well, even so, it's very, very good. But it's not a California pizza, and it's not exactly a Chicago deep dish. We order two with regularity: the whole wheat crust with chicken, pesto, and basil and the regular crust with ham, spinach and mushroom. I can't exactly describe why they're so good, but they are. A bit on the spendy side, though one large deep dish will easily feed three hungry people. The thin crust, available by the slice as well, are absolutely excellent. the slices are New York sized -- large enough to fill my 20 year old for lunch. Zachary's has become quite a local tradition, and it's not the best pizza I've had, but it's a mighty fine food, and definitely, definitely worth trying out. if you don't become a fan, it's no loss, but if you do... you'll be so happy they're serving those 5 pound pies.

Pros: Hefty pizza's unlike any other available in the area

Cons: hard to park sometimes, very loud ambience, can be considered expensive.

We have friends in Sacramento who've actually been known to plan wekeends in the Bay Area simply so they can get pizza at Zachary's. It's almost more like a lasagne than a pizza -- deep layers of toppings, cheese, and some extra dough and tomatoes on top. Parking is very difficult, and it's often hard to find a table -- but you can buy pizzas to go, or even get a "half-baked" pizza to finish cooking at home.

There's something special with the pizza. Even though it is very thick, it is not "heavy". I also love the fact that they put a lot of tomoatoes on their pizza.

We go here whenever we get the chance when we're up in Berkeley. They have deep dish pizza which is different from the others around here. The sauce is on top and they put a lot of sauce on. I like the Zachary's Special and the Spinach and Mushroom. I've only gone in for whole pizzas, but I think you can order by the slice as well.

Super-fresh ingredients top the delicious, gooey pizza that they do at Zachary's. We usually have the Good Health pizza, which is chicken, spinach and mozarella on a whole wheat crust. It's amazing, especially the crust. The vibe is decidedly laid back and though there's often a wait (and the pizza takes a long time) it's worth it. The salads are also excellent and they have a reasonable beer and wine selection.

PROS: laid back, delicious
CONS: a tad expensive

The Chicago-style deep-dish pizza here is amazing! A perfect combination of cheese, crust, sauce and toppings. Very filling, but good to the last bite. Be prepared for a very long wait you can occupy yourself by admiring the art on the walls (all featuring Zacharys) or stare at your neighbors while they enjoy a yummy slice of Zacharys pizza.

The fantastic food here is worth braving the crowds for. The crusts are thick and the cooks aren't afraid to slather on the cheese, making the pizza here quite an unforgettable experience.
It can get quite crowded in the evenings, though, and I think
my taste buds may have been influenced by my hunger, as I was just about ready to grab food of the nearby customers' table since I was so hungry by the time they delivered us our food.
But the pizza we had was wonderful, I'd go back again (though probably not during the dinner hour).

Went last night to Zachary's for the first time after hearing that it was the best in the bay area. Was very excited to walk in and be seated right away (a Monday night). Ordered a 4 topping deep crust pizza from the blunt waitress...

While waiting I could not talk to my partner over the loudness in the place. When I moved my chair closer I was rudely asked to move back as i was blocking the way(but all the extra "pizza stools" were allowed to be there!)

Then the pizza. While it was good, I too had a difficult time finding the ingredients that we ordered. The gobs of sauce on top overpowered the entire thing. The crust was good, and overall flavor decent, but nothing special.

When we get Zachary's, there are never any leftovers. The quality of the pizza is worth the sometimes long line. The stuffed pizza is phenomenal, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is perfect for a pizza joint, should you choose to stay. If you take out, the pizza is still amazinly good, and always really hot so by the time you get home it is perfectly tempered to eat.

I used to travel from SF State to Berkeley once a week to get their stuffed spinach and mushroom pizza with garlic. And that was when I was a student. It never disappointed then, over 10 years ago, (I can't believe I wrote that), and it does not disappoint now. Sometimes we get the healthy chicken, stuffed pizza of course, and that's good. The pizza is similar to lasagne. Never order a small because you'll want more. Trust me. They have good salads too. I've tried their thin crust and it was similar to lots of other pizzas that I've tried. But their stuffed crust is their masterpiece.

I absolutely loved their stuffed pizzas. They don't deliver and dining there can mean a long table wait. But it's well worth it. Call ahead and get one to go - they'll make it all the way or half baked so you can take it home, finish cooking it and have it perfectly fresh.

Yes, this really is great pizza. Rather than wait in line forever, though, just buy one of their pizzas uncooked and finish the job at home. Before I came to this place, I was afraid that I had left decent pizza behind when I went to California. I'm a dedicated carnivore, and I still loved the "Vegetarian" pizza with cheese and spinach.

Lines are long, but that can be easily solved by eating the pizza at home.

I went to Zachary's for a deep dish but naive Californians, my bf and I ordered a thin crust vs. the stuffed crust. We thought the stuff crust was like Pizza's hut, where they load up the crust with cheese inside. We were disappointed we didn't get to try the deep dish but the thin crust was the BEST we've ever had. Toppings were tasty and the crust was crispy and delicious. We're going back for the deep crust next time but didn't regret trying out the thin crust.

The most famous pizza that ever emerged from Zachary's Pizza is their special Vegetarian pizza. Now although meat lovers are saying "Ew, vegetarian." they shouldn't. This pizza will make meat lovers forget that it doesn't have meat. The pizza is a Chicago style pizza with three cheeses and spinach inside and covered with chopped tomatoes. The pizza is excellent and has given the parlor an excellent name.

The restuarant is small, so I recomend calling in and getting one of their pizzas that are half baked and taking it home to finish it off and watch a great dvd with the pizza piping hot from your oven. Their lunch slices are a great deal as well. They consisently win awards year after year for their pizza, this is no secret pizza place, the words been out for years.

Zachary's serves the best Chicago style pizza in California. They serve the stuffed crust variety with two layers of crust. They use the highest quality ingredients and an excellent dough to turn out spectacular pies. I love the plain pie and the Zachary's special but truly all of the combinations are wonderful. Zachary's is the best.

This is a bustling vibrant pizza place and it has won alot of awards from local papers for 'Best Pizza' -The awards are hung proudly on the wall. There is alway a line out the door for seating and the seating is actually limited maybe 50 people at most. Despite the crowds service is usually pretty quick you place your order while you wait in line. Good pizza and beer.

PROS: good chicago style pizza
CONS: limited to on street parking in a busy shopping area

Having read all the rave reviews I was disappointed in my experience; having ordered a 5 ingredient deep dish only to have to ask the waitress if the order was taken incorrectly -as my wife and I couldn't find the mushrooms nor pepperoni - could you believe the waitress, with her knife and fork, had to search along with us and say "there they are" - that makes for a very sad experience - while your pizza get smothered with loads of tomatoe chunks we found found a complete lack of adequate ingredients...good luck..

I'm from New York so ofcourse I'm not going to think any pizza from California is good (and trust me I've gone to plenty of pizza joints in the Bay Area).

I tried Zackery's pizzeria in Rockridge about 5 years ago. I was pleasantly surprised by the taste. It was really good! The only thing I was surprised was the price. A "pie" of pizza was a lot more expensive than what I would pay for in New York City!

But if you are in the area and want a good pizza - you HAVE to go to Zachary's (regardless of the price).

Pros: near BART, good quality pizza

Cons: , limited parking, a bit overpriced

For a major city, the Bay Area plays host to far too many horrible pizzerias. Zachary's is truly an exception. It's deep-dish pies hold their own against Gino's East and the rest of Chicago's finest. Now if only someone could open a place that mirrored New York's finest pies...

This is way more than pizza. For highest entertainment value, hang out near the kitchen and watch.

The ambience is not worth talking about, aside from the mostly wry, intelligent staff that make being there fun. The wait is always long, and it's almost always loud, so I tend to get my pizzas to go. Which I do probably weekly.

It's cash only, and there's no delivery; they don't provide those conveniences because they don't have to. The pizza is just that good.

First of all the flat pizza is easily the worst in the country - it has no flavor and terrible texture. The dep dish gives deep dish a bad name. I don't understanfd why this place gets so crowded. Bad sauce, bad service, and bad prices.

It's awesome!!! The best pizza ever!!!
I don't like pizza very much because it's very greasy and too much cheese. Pizza from Zachary's is different. A thick layer of tomato on top is very fresh and juicy. I tried the spinach and mushroom pizza. It tastes perfect even there's no meat! I love the crust as it's very cruchy.

This is the best pizza since the Windy City Pizza Pub blew in and out of the Bay Area. The Chorizo and pepper pizza is unbelievable and you just cannot get tired of it. Once a week is most definitely not enough. Great staff. Friendly, colorful atmosphere, and where else can you really enjoy a glass of red wine out of plastic cup?

Zachary's still brings in the crowds and quality remains high. It offers thin-crust pies and salads, but the Chicago-style deep-dish pizza is the thing to order. We like the meat pies best, stuffed with pepperoni, ham, ground beef or…
