In Short
There's nearly always a constant line at this venerable taqueria, with patrons drawn from the entire spectrum of the city's wildly diverse demographics. Though tables can be scarce, most diners are willing to share. The highlights among the vast menu include tacos and burritos. The building blocks for these Mexican stalwarts include four kinds of tortillas (from basic flour to red-chili); pinto, black or refried beans; ten meat fillings; Spanish or vegetarian rice; and four types of fresh salsa.

Key Points

  • Authentic & Fresh Mexican Food
  • Variety for Lunch and Dinner
  • Reasonably Priced Cuisines

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - The aguas frescas make a sweet addition to any of the entrees.
  2. The Extras - Mariachis make impromptu appearances on an almost-nightly basis here.

Excellent authentic mexican food

by Jeanne L. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,217

El toro tagueria has been around in the mission district for many years. They continue to serve fresh and tasty authentic mexican food. On the weekends, they have soups on specials. Such as beef & chicken. They also have shrimp cocktails. It is very inexpensive and the atmosphere is fun. Always packed. Parking is hard .

A Favorite

by Terry Y. | insider Insider | Rank: 25,356

Taqueria El Toro is truly one of my favorites. The food is inexpensive, great value, tasty and fresh... The place can get packed often. Parking can be hard, but it's the Mission... I highly recommend El Toro...

Same Owner as Pancho Villas

by Caesar G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,010

This place is the exact same as Pancho Villas but with a different name. The owner is the same. The food is good and with the new remodel it is a lot more comfortable to eat there. Can't go wrong with this taqueria.

So-So

by JLove85

Parking is hard to find - Burritos are not the best. They are smaller in comparison to other taqueria's in the city. The worst part - The meat isn't fresh - Not cooked when ordered. Another complaint was they don't have a lot of meat in them. It wasn't the worst burrito i've ever had, but I'm not going back.

Could be better

by ezikpe31

I went over there with a bunch of people, it wasn't up to my standards. So go somewhere else, if I've done anything for you this is it.

Damn good burrito

by funloverinsf

They hit the spot. I've tried many other places, trying to seek out that truly authentic, hole-in-the-wall place - but this one is consistently good (not to mention clean and friendly). If you want a solid burrito (lots of choices), go here.

Pros: best burritos, friendly, clean

Cons: parking

REAL MEXICAN? YEAH RIGHT!!!

by PECOSA73

I just have to say their food quality is really bad.
They use "can" refried beans, steak instead of bbq meat (carne asada), avocado is old and their rice is burned.
They need to lower the prices and better the quality of food.
I would recommend LA CORNETA TAQUERIA to anyone.

My wife has been going to this place since she was a little girl and she won't go anywhere else for burritos. We go probably once a week and never get sick of it. Great food, friendly staff and it's ina great neighborhood.

Best Mexican north of the border!

by bdgsf

Almost always fresh, hot and delicious, the food at this place is better than almost anywhere I've ever eaten Mexican food -- including Cabo, TJ and Juarez. Only in Nogales, did I encounter better food.

Tops- Best meat, efficient service

by kevymac311

El Toro is the best. Why you may ask do I think so? Well, like its sister Pancho Villa, which is better known in the city, its fare is tops. What sets El Toro apart is the hot sauces. They are just a little bit better than Pancho and best in the city. The only drawback is price, which used to be reasonable, but was raised during the power crisis substantially. So even a burrito with all the trimmings can exceed $7.00. That's probably driven away some regulars who were used to eating at this fine taqueria for much less over the years. But I still go religiously for the hot sauce, its hand made from ground roasted chiles and can't be beat! Try it and see for yourself.

Pros: service, selection, speed

Cons: parking, expensive

Top Taqueria

by EricRorer

Owned by the same folks who run Pancho Villa Taquria, this somewhat more intimate version of the Mission stalwart, makes a superb alternative for buritto lovers who want to avoid the larger taqueria's assembly-line atmosphere. Just as with Pancho Villa, the tortilla chips and chile relleno burritos are standouts.

Pros: Tortilla Chips, Food
