I bought my first guitar from Hertlein today (March 12, 2010). The service: time spent on thorough product explanation -the knowledgeable staff (Doug), the prices were good and comparable to those found on the internet. The whole process took an hour (I am brand spanking new to this) but the service made me feel this was a great experience. I plan to take lessons through Hertlein also - at a reasonable price. I felt Doug took the time to explain so much to me from the guitar selection, amp, stand, etc etc. All I need to do now is learn how to play! I am ready to get to it!!

In December of '07 I went into the store to look for xmas gifts. My son has taken drum lessons there for a couple of years. So I'm looking at the gear and this guy asks me if he can help me and I'm saying "well, he got the expensive gift already, the Roland electronic drum kit, so I'm just looking for an xmas package"

"Where did you buy his Roland set?"

I answered truthfully "Guitar Center" to which he replied "Thanks for sharing the love!!"

I happen to go there, bringing my $8000 Hill Signature in for a high fret. The sales manager was a real ass#@&#. Not being able to fix the problem, the repair guy was away, I asked if I could play some steel string guitars. He said only the cheap ones, the expensive ones get scratched and then customers won't buy them. I said, why do you think I won't buy one? He had a few things to say which I really didn't hear as I was walking out. With an $8000 classical guitar you'd figure that I had the money and I do, to buy anything in the store. But I wasn't either dressed properly and my guitar looks like it has been played, which it has. All I can say is the guy does not really read people, have enough clarity to read all that is before him, a 56 year old guy wearing $200 shoes, trashy jeans and a $150 belt with a solid silver David Dear ranger set, shirt with no buttons as to not scratch a guitar. Fingerstyle so I don't scratch with picks. DON'T GO THERE THEY HAVE BAD ATTITUDE!

Wow I can't believe someone wrote that! Kurt Newman the store manager is probably one of the nicest most respectful people I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with in this business. And I deal with alot of people. Anyways, Don't believe what you read folks, He's a class act all the way

***This is a post script regarding the reply to this review as seen above it. Believe me I have better things to do than lie about a man's character. I attest FIRMLY that my experience accounted for in this review is the truth. How dare you suggest I am a liar. It is quite possible that Kurt Newman is not a canal for excrement in every business dealing he has but he certainly was with me.***

This is my second review. The first was removed I believe because it was a little too metaphorically colourful. I shall now change my language a bit yet still convey my experience with these people. KURT NEWMAN was extremely disrespectful to me as a customer and a man. He told his employee Lloyd that he would not do a nut switch on a Dean V 79 that I was prepared to buy. Lloyd told me the following words:
"Kurt said he didn't want to do the work on the guitar because it is a pain in the butt." This was after I was told that KURT NEWMAN would work with me and call me at 11:00am the following day. I did not get a call.

How do they even expect to stay in Business?, I used to shop at this store, bought my first guitar, an amp, effect pedals even took lessons and recommended to friends when it was Music Unlimited. Yesterday I went back to buy some accessories for my guitar I paid $50, I later discovered I could have paid $30 at Guitar Center. when I went back to try to return the unopened items I found out THEY DONT GIVE REFUNDS and they DONT MATCH PRICES. So don't take me wrong, this is not about stinking $20 this is about Store Policy, if you buy something and then find out it doesn't work for you should be able to get your money back. Anyway here is my advice, if you want to try some gear, sure go to this store, if you want to BUY it go somewhere else.

I used to hate getting slimed when I went in this place before.

With the new owner, things have changed a lot. Better attitude, better prices, etc. The guy worked really hard to get me a good deal on an amp - answered all my questions too.

Some people complain that they could have saved $2.47 by driving 24 miles each way to Guitar Center - but then you have to endure the terrible service, the noise, and the attitude. I'd rather save my gas money and support a local business - especially with this kind of service.

I just bought a Fender Aerodyne from them. I got a good price and James (the sales guy) was very knowledgable and patient. I know as a consumer, we like to get non-showroomed owned internet pricing from retailers. But, show rooms = rent per square foot. I try to buy from local owners even if it cost a little more. What would buying a new guitar with out ever being able to pick it up be like? If you want the conveniance of going to a store and touch and hold the merchandice, there is a little charge for that folks.
I bought my Daughters electric guitar from them too. They have my business. I'm not going to sniffle over paying 3 bucks more for strings.

I have been shopping there of and on for years, and it was hit and miss. Sometimes the sales guy will give you a good price (usually fair price on expensive items over $1000), and other times they try to rip you off (they'll try to charge you 9.00 for a pack of D'Adarrio XL strings).
I had high hopes when I saw the new ownership sign. I even purchased a Taylor acoustic for a fair price and got good service from the sales guy (the guitar even came with the proper paperwork, which is more than I can say for my previous purchases under the previous ownership - I purchased a Gibson ES-137 that came with ES-335 paperwork, and Super Reverb which came with Deluxe manuals and paperwork), among other fiascos). I have gone into that store ready to burn $500 or more, only to walk away disgusted that they tried to rip me off for an item I desired. They were like Guitar Center in the late 70's and early 80's...you had to haggle for everything!!! After my first purchase at Hertlein Guitars, I was hopeful that I now ha
