I figured since I've had a strawberry-oj-banana smoothie at the Silverlake Coffee Co. before, it would be no problem for them to whip one up again.

Big mistake. A simple request, which was on the menu was met with staff attitude, hostility, and a bland tasting smoothie without the strawberries. Do yourself a culinary and experiential favor and head over to the Downbeat Cafe at 1202 N Alvarado. They don't have smoothies, but the rest of the menu is worth the forfeiture of a blended fruit drink

Expect the Downbeat to have better music, better service, better food, better atmosphere including more pleasant and stimulating artwork, and last but not least better coffee.

Pros: parking

Cons: service, ambience, food quality, food taste, atmosphere, cheesy artwork

I got my Latte right away, and it was delicious. But after putting a dollar in the tip jar, my bagel somehow got lost in the shuffle of other patrons. I watched a few omlettes come and go from the skillet to people who were behind me in line until I got the server's attention. She still made one more order before mine. When I got home and bit into the bagel, it was totally dry! I opened it up and saw a small dab of cream cheese slapped across the center, right over the hole. It was a crappy cafe experience.

This busy little cafe owned by a sweet and friendly Korean family provides real atmostphere and coziness and is almost always busy. Silverlake Coffee sits next to a quirky used book store with which it shares a great two-tier outdoor patio (perfect for leisurely reading on a Sunday afternoon). It also features good coffee (from mild and refreshing to full-bodied and strong), an array of packaged and loose-leaf teas, the usual as well as unusual food selections (try the Korean BBQ wrap, it's delicious!), and free wi-fi access for leisurely web browsing from your laptop. If you don't have a laptop, they also provide two pay-to-use internet stations.

PROS: Cozy atmostphere, good coffee and tea, free wi-fi
CONS: Can get crowded, sometimes cold, and sometimes dark on cloudy days
