5/15/2011 My son went to this academy for 5 yrs and he finally struggle to get his black belt not because he was not good or he was lazy. It is because the school has every intention to delay the teaching so that parents would have to pay more to extend the contracts for the kids. My son won gold medals in UC Berkeley and Santa Clara competition by beating kids that were 2 to 3 yrs his senior and he also has almost a perfect attendance in his 5 yrs in Sun Kung Fu. Since withdrawing from the Wu Shu Team to pursue his ahtletic ability in tennis he just not learning much in the regular class. It is not right to force the parents to pay more in order to learn more. The regular class is always crowded and has not fulfill the promised services that supposed to render to the kids. They blamed all the problem to the kids without pointing the finger to themself. Their scam is to draw as much money from the parents as they can by encouraging wu shu team cash participation and expensive private lessons. Please be careful, be very careful. I just want to share my experience with others

We wanted put our son in an environment where he could learn some discipline, respect, and learn to flourish in a structured environment. We went around to several schools and were immediately impressed by how well Sifu Sun ran his classes. He clearly loved kids, he was very encouraging and made the classes fun; yet he was also strict and had high standards for his students. He also had under his training some of the top wushu students in the Bay Area (you can see their pictures and awards at the school).

Unfortunately, he mysteriously disappeared last year immediately after changing the school to his name. If you ask the staff what happened to the Sifu, they give you an awkward smile and evasive and inconsistent answers. That just breeds distrust -- I would appreciate some honesty.

And the loss isn't just of the Sifu, but the quality of the school has been greatly diminished. The classes are still fun for my son, but they've lowered their standards significantly. For one, they don't command the same level of respect from the students; they're simply not as strict. Second, they don't require students to demonstrate cumulative knowledge of their forms at testing anymore. I.e., it's edging toward the cliche belts for cash kung fu school. Third, they don't seem to push the kids nearly as hard towards truly doing their best.

To be fair, it isn't a terrible school. But it's a far cry from the school we originally signed up for -- which was probably the best in the area for developing kids in wushu.

And -- as with all of these schools, I do suggest you send your child in for a trial lesson to see for yourself. It's free.

I find the comments from the review below to be extremely offensive and juvenile. Whoever they are, they certainly try their best to mar the school and its instructors with ridiculous insults. After trying tae kwon do and karate, we decided to give kung fu a go, and our experience was completely different. I first enrolled my daughter into the trial program, then upgraded to their yearly program after she told me that she loved it.

We have been going to this martial arts academy for almost two years now, and we have nothing but good things to say! I have never seen my daughter so enthusiastic about anything, and I can honestly tell that she is enjoying herself in the classes. I find that the prices are comparable to the other schools in the area that I??ve been to, and I was very happy to hear that they even accepted check!

The instructors are excellent teachers, and are all very patient and kind. They are willing to slow down and demonstrate the movements step by step if a student doesn??t get it the first few times around. We all miss the vacationing headmaster, but we have been told that he??s taking a break for health reasons, and will return when he gets better.

You should definitely try this school is you??re interested in having your children learn martial arts!

Honestly, if you sign up here, you'll regret it. There are some shaolin and nearby.

Once upon a time, this place was fantastic. I learned a lot, I enjoyed it, I looked forward to kung fu everyday.

That all changed when sifu (master) sun changed the name and retired. Master Sun apparently went to China or something. No one really knows. Before he left, he fired every decent teacher there. The replacement were these idiots from China. I believe there are 3 now, 2 of them are extremely bad teachers. The last one, the shortest male teacher is okay.

On top of that they charge ridiculous prices nowadays. If you see their "trial" offers, it looks attractive right? Well that's for the "trial". They go out of their way to suck every penny out of you and give you subpar teaching.

If I could do ratemyteacher.com for these teachers, it would be F/F/F/F for every category.
