i've been to this store serveral times and each time i go i get the cold shoulder. even when i show up in the middle of the day the owner just opens his door and gives me his email address. over the past six months i've been to most of the fish stores around the bay area and this one appears to be the worse(as far as customer service). if ur looking for fish stores i suggest [6th avenue aquarium] in san francisco, [lucky goldfish aquarium] in oakland, or [Pet Central/Hung Ming aquarium in chinatown SF for both freshwater and saltwater.

I've been to Octopus Garden many times, and have bought a decent amount of salt water fish and equipments. The owner is a bit aloof, but nice, knowledgeable and helpful. He tends to hire fish geeks that know what they are talking about, so that is a huge plus if you don't know what to get.
Their prices I find are higher than average, but if you want a knowledgeable staff that takes good care of their live shipments, it's a good store for you.

The proviso to this review must be the following: I didn't buy anything here, so I'm not sure if the animals were as sickly as they appeared, and only spent about fifteen minutes total in the store.

Nevertheless. . .The Octopus's Garden [sic] is just south of Ashby on Shattuck Avenue in South Berkeley. Housed in a cinderblock shopping structure, the building doesn't look very exciting from the outside, though there is a Octopus swimming along one wall. Inside, the store is literally crammed with aquariums. To the last, each is filled with algae and populated by animals that appear to be working on just getting by. A cute little red hermit crab seemed happy enough, though some of the other creatures didn't seem to have fared so well. In one tank, a sea star, missing several appendages had crammed itself into one corner of a tank. Its limbs looked bloated, a sign of ill health.

The owner, to his credit, appeared knowledgeable enough, but entirely disinterested in helping a relative newcomer to keeping an aquarium (I've had freshwater tanks before, but I was interested in setting up my first saltwater aquarium). He ignored me, ignored my questions, and generally was entirely useless.

Moreover, when asked if his animals were sustainably sourced (that is, the rare/endangered species come from farms rather than from the sea), he laughed and told me that everything in his shop was endangered, and everything in his shop was wild-caught.

So, on the plus side, the owner appears knowledgeable enough and he has rare specimens. . .on the other hand, not only are you contributing to the rapid endangerment of species like Nemo and his buddies, you also may be aquiring sick specimens. Not a place for a beginner. I wouldn't recommend it at all.

This place has a wide variety of unusual, hard to find tropical fish, and really top quality fishkeeping equipment. These features make this a great place to go if you're an experienced aquarist and have or want to set up a nice tank.

Owner is brusque, abrupt, seems wildly reluctant to give information. The tanks are haphazardly labeled, most fish are, in fact, not labeled.
