Oliveto is one of my absolute favorite Bay Area restaurants. The food is delicious and beautiful, the menu is seasonal and always has fantastic options and the atmosphere and decor is perfect. The service is stellar, I have never been disappointed by my waiter or waitress, they are always full of information (especially on those tricky pasta names in Italian).

Excellent place to go for a special occasion and I highly recommend the pana cotta for dessert.

I have been wanting to write a review for Oliveto for a while since it's always excellent and finally just had to after eating lunch there yesterday! Amazing! I had their 'ham &cheese', it was with mozzarella, tomato conserva and pancetta...panini style. Then I had their pine needle ice cream with pinenut praline...yum! Their pastas are house made and the flavor combinations are brilliant! Their menu also changes daily, so it's a good idea to check ahead of time and see if you like it. Once you're there, do not be afraid to ask about the menu or 'what's especially good tonight'. Their servers have to come in early to be trained on how to describe each dish on their menu they are serving for the evening. It's the way they describe your food to you that makes it even more delicious!

I absolutely love this place. I go there as often as I can afford. It's worth every penny though.

They have two sections: Upstairs and the cafe. All the hot food from the cafe is prepared in the brick oven next to the bar and is a bit cheaper but still awesome. It's first come first serve.

Upstairs is the main event. The dining room is beautiful. The dishes are all very close to authentic country Italian food. This isn't spaghetti and meatballs. Think more salted pork belly with arugula. The menu changes constantly.

Desert is always fantastic.

Their wine list is superb, extensive, and reasonably priced (it's about a straight double.)

I love this place.

We gave this restaurant another try after 7 years of a boycott because our friends wanted to go there. Boy, was this a regret!

Our waiter was unfriendly and acted like he was bothered to describe the dishes on the menu. But we had to ask because we couldn't understand anything on the menu. They try too hard to try to make the menu sound fancy with pasta names, etc. but it's annoying. It's not like we are hillbillies from another planet - we go out to fancy restaurants all the time and consider ourselves foodies.

When I finally got my fancy-can't say the name pasta, it was horrible. It tasted like dog food! To be sure I was not out of my mind, I had the other 3 people at my table taste it and it agreed. Yuck! I had to send it back and switch it out for the fish which was edible but not that much better. These people are the smartest people on earth! Let's serve crappy, can't say the name pasta and other food because people won't know the difference anyway. Well, only non-foodies or someone without a taste bud!

We will never return to this restaurant again. They can fool other diners but we done with the charade.

Pros: Location

Cons: Food, service, menu wording (no descriptions - just fancy pasta names)

Probably the chef would be better off staying in the kitchen (probably) instead of making some bad imitation of salumi.
Disappointing dinner and disappointing his salumi that I have tried several times.
From a native Italian (from Piemonte) point of view, tonight's dinner was merely ok, carne cruda was not anything close to what it should be (why the hard-boiled egg, there should be a raw egg yolk in there, or are you afraid no one is going to order it?). The pasta was overcooked and the bolognese way too spiced up. Sorry but you can't still (and probably never could) call yourself authentic.
Ciao.

Been there before but will not be back again. The service was lean and hurried making you feel somewhat unwelcome, not a smile or suggestion to be found. We were promptly notified that of six entree's on the menu only four were available to us. Well I didn't go there for steak or chicken so now I'm down to two items. The SMALLISH plates were very good leaving you begging for desert which could have salvaged the evening however the desert was simply an enticement for what must have been a cruel joke. Some soupy toppings were poured on a plate and served up ... I was astonished. If you can't make desert just say so at least the time and money would have been spent else where, which is where I will dine next.

Pros: Near Bart

Cons: They will not live up to their reputation for food or service.

very expensive and overpriced. The porcini mushroom and celery salad was $16.50 and weighed about one ounce!!! Just a few thin slivers of veggies with a little cheese and olive oil spread out on a plate. You'd think they were doling out caviar. The wine and entrees were also way too expensive. Fill up on bread and water or leave hungry or poor. They deserve credit for the quality of the food and the pleasant setting, but you can have a better overall dining experience down the street for less money.

Great Food, Horrible Service! It took 15 minutes for our waitress to come by our table to say hello. We ordered wine then she disappeared again. We were served water but had to poor it ourselves. We often go to this restaurant and they are usually good about sharing and serving in courses. Our food came all at once!!!! The good news is that they DID bring share plates.......... We felt completely ignored during our entire meal. When we ran out of wine our waitress took away the bottle and never asked us if we wanted more. The check came quickly but we had to wait another 15 minutes for our change. Despite the fact that the food was fantastic the service ruined our evening.

I used to go to the cafe downstairs quite frequently. I love the homey feel of the restaurant and the food is quite good despite a limited menu. However, the last 3 times I have gone have been terrible experiences. The service has been horrible, horrible, horrible. On 2 occasions, when we sat outside, we were completely neglected and had to keep going inside the restaurant to ask for a server or anything we needed. Yesterday was the last straw - I brought a friend who has never been to the Rockridge area and we walked in at 4:30. I asked the hostess if we could just have dessert and coffee and she said that was fine. We sat outside and couldn't get a waitperson to help us, despite asking twice. When the waitress finally did come outside (after we waited for 1/2 an hour) and we told her we just wanted dessert and coffee, she said "just so you know, we don't usually serve only dessert and coffee here." I told her we had asked the hostess and she said it was OK, but the waitress insisted they "don't do that, but would let us do it this once". The restaurant was very slow at this time, so it's not as if we were taking up seats at peak dinner hours. I was so embarrassed for bringing my friend there, but we just got up and left. I'm never going back here again and it's a shame because I used to frequent it. It seems like they've gotten new staff in the past few months and it's all gone downhill.

We went there to celebrate an honor bewtowed on my husband. We had been waiting for a special occasion. Unfortunately it did not live up to its reputation. The food, what there was of it, was very good. The service was indifferent. The atmosphere was pleasant. Basically not all it's cracked up to be. There are a lot of places we will explore before we go back there.

We ate at the downstairs, where the prices are reasonable. Phenomenal food. I had the pizza and our other guests had the pork/polenta and the penne. Each dish was excellent. No complaints. Our dessert, the pear/ice cream thing, was outstanding. Wines by the glass were quite pricey, but very good. Overall, I can see why they rate this place so highly.

Oliveto easily stands as one of my favorite restaurants in the bay area. The food is always reliably great and at times outstanding. The pastas are fresh and usually excellent. The grilled meats are succulent. One of my favorite things is to sit at the bar, order a few appetizers and let John, the sommelier, pick out the wine. I highly recommend their special dinners they organize around such items as Hogs or Truffles. I think what really brings me back time after time is the warmth of the atmosphere and the wonderful staff.

It used to be terrific but my recent dinner there was a tremendous disappointment. Probably the worst food I've had in a high-priced restaurant in the Bay Area in the last 15 years. Dry, tasteless, grey meat. Service was inept. Three of us ordered the same dish - it was brought out at different times to each of us. And plunked, not placed. It was also very slow, perhaps to disguise the fact that the place was more than half-empty.

We have decided to try Oliveto, after all, it has been there for all these years. Overall the food was bad and way too expensive, the portions were very small (we are not big people), and unexciting. There are better values elsewhere. We will not go back to Oliveto and we do not recommend it. For years we have been sampling many Bay Area restaurants and don't mind paying a high price, but in this case, it's not at all justified. Two thumbs down.

Although the beet salad was excellent it was small and cost $14.00. The entrees were boring and very pricey. My wife had a New York steak that cost $38.00! It was big, bland and of poor quality. The waitress suggested having the meat cooked medium or well to make it tender! Should of realized at that moment they were trying to cover up the meat's poor quality. Service was excellent and the environment pleasant. Because there are so many restaurants in the Bay Area that offer much better food at these prices I don't think I'll be back. It's a shame, because I proposed to my wife there 16 years ago.

We were looking for a new restaurant on this side of the Bay and I used CitySearch to find Oliveto. After reading the reviews on the site our party of 5 almost didn't choose this restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised! The salad with blue cheese, the beef, halibut, and pasta carbonara were excellent. The lamb was so so. Sarah was our server and she was one of the best we've ever encountered. Yes, the kitchen is slow and if you are in a hurry I don't recommend it, but if you want a nice leisurely dinner with friends it's great. Our table was by the kitchen so it was rather noisy but so were we!

My husband and I had a wonderful meal at Oliveto in the downstairs cafe. I had a delicious pasta al forno, and my husband had a braised pork dish with polenta.
Although the bill was steep, the excellent service and quality meal was worth the price.
I would recommend the cafe over the main dining room for those on a tight budget.

You know a place is good when people from San Francisco will drive across the Bay Bridge to go out for dinner. You'll get the freshest ingredients and lovely, unusual food combinations.

The place is pricey ($$$$$), but it's worth it. I had a spectacular dessert once, so good I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. The staff was nice enough to get the recipe from the chef for me. Now that's service!

We had overpriced, tasteless, tiny morsels of food; example - a salad of wild arugula for about $13 consisted of about 8 tiny leaves of arugula, an eyedropper of balsamic vinegar, and 3 thin slices of avacado. I KNOW what very high grade balsamic vinegar costs, but this was an utter joke. The roasted pork loin was dry, cold, and tasteless. The service was nice, but the tab was outrageous. Afterwards I was told by friends that "no one goes there anymore." Too bad, it was once a good restaurant.

I was seated immediately upon arrival. I had the melon wrapped in prosciutto; it was quite good. The melon wasn't soggy and it worked well with the prosciutto. I had the quail: the seasonings were wonderful, but I don't think I like the taste of quail (not my type of meat, perhaps). I liked the green beans; not mushy and slightly past crunchy. The dessert was outstanding: black berries in a creme anglaise sauce. Service was attentive and non-intrusive.

The tables are too close together in some areas of the place, but I had a great table near the window. The noise level increased as more dinners showed up. The prices are high for what it offers. You have to ask: What am I paying for? I didn't have wine and my bill was steep. The food was great/good; I just didn't think it was "WOW!"

complaints from friends and my terrible experience at the cafe kept me away from this restaurant. however the glowing reviews of the chef from so many publications and an expense account opportunity i finally decided to try it out. you can definitely see the chez panisse influences. very fresh and seasonal ingredients. professional and courteous service. nice and intimate atmosphere. the highlight of the meal was the dessert. ricotta ice cream with crepes and fresh strawberries. OMG, amazing, delicious. unfortunately, the rest of the meal was good but not spectacular. for the very high prices, i had expected more, more complexity to the flavors, better presentation? good thing for expense account meals, i would have felt cheated if i paid on my own.

To be frank, I took out-of-town guests here as I was told it was pretty good. How embarrassed I was to have fallen for that! The food they claim is Italian is far from. The service was absolutely barbaric. We had reservations and still waited way too long for our table for shameful food. Frankly, I would be too embarrassed to bring myself there again for what we paid. Horrible experience.

I must say I am quite surprised by the negativity of the reviews here. I have dined at Oliveto several times and I believe it is far and away the best classic Italian restaurant in the East Bay. They effectively fuse traditional Italian flavors with the California style of creating food inspired and driven by fresh local ingredients. The house-made pastas are usually the best dishes, but I have never ordered something I didnt like there. Unlike many east bay restaurants in the same class, I have found the service to be consistently excellent, very attentive and helpful. The dining room is nice but the tables are a little too close together. It is also a little slow to get a table at time even with a reservation, although they have a nice downstairs bar area so its not unpleasant. Wouldnt go pretheater but reliably outstanding for any other occasion.

If you believe, as I do, that a well-rounded dining experience should include [at the very least] courteous service, then you do not want to try Oliveto. Okay, if there food was even somewhat good I would say that may be overlooked, but it's not worth it. There are plenty of other Italian restaurants that are far better and far more inexpensive. For what this restaurant has to offer, the stuffy atmosphere and even stuffier service and attitude is unnecessary. Go to the store, buy yourself some Bertolli products and a nice bottle of wine, get some friends together at your house and put on some nice music - trust me, it will be a far better experience.

On Saturady night we made a reservation for 7:30, but arrived at 7:00. Getting seated early was no problem, and the service was generally good. My wife picked the niman steak dish because they were out of rabbit. I had the Sea Bass. In a word our food was medicore at best. My Sea Bass was OK, but small and not worth the price. The beef, however, was just bad. We were expecting a nice big cut of meat for the price. Instead what we got was soemthing that looked like it was scraped off a Philly cheese steak. Thin no side dishes, and grossly undercooked( it was raw on the edges). All this with single salad 2 glasses of wine, and a dessert (the only good thing) for $100. What a rip - avoid this place like the plague. Many better restaurants for far cheaper.

Pros: ambiance, location

Cons: bad food, price

We had reservations for 9 P.M., and did not get seated until 10. Furthermore, the hostess had the worst attitude ever. If you want to experience an irritating dining experience, Oliveto Cafe is for you!

My boyfriend and I were given a gift certificate for Oliveto. We checked it out one Monday night. Over 24 years of dining, and dining with obnoxious teenager peers, I have never had a worse dining experience. A group of 20 40 something year olds were (obviously) drunk, and disrupting the entire restaurant. The manager was at their table 3 different times, as well as 2 other diners, asking them to please keep it down. Not once were they asked to leave, as they obviuolsy had quite a large tab. The food came, and was just as disappointing. Over priced, under flavored, and not worth my time. I enjoyed my tv dinner more, as I needed it to fill me up. Ironically, our friends visited it 2 weeks later and had a less than positive expereince as well.

Pros: design, parking

Cons: staff, food, quality of food

The management and staff need to focus their attention on service and cuisine. The "weekly" menu is unimaginative and the food is overpriced. This restaurant is being run straight into the ground. Furthermore, the level of arrogance is unprecedented for such a common restaurant. I only hope this restaurant goes out of business soon, so that Alice Waters or someone of her caliber, can make use of such a prime location.

Too bad, the place has gone way downhill in the past couple years. While there are some nice appetizers, the entrees are disappointing (sea bass, and chicken) and the place is overpriced. I won't return, and I'm not particularly picky.

Pros: great parking(Bart!), great location

It was a warm afternoon when we went (6/16) so the patio table we got was perfect. I had the summer squash pizza (a special) and he had the ham and cheese sandwich with dried tomatoes. Both were good and were a good value. The ambience was especially nice on a spring afternoon. The service could have been faster but it was better than being rushed out. I would definitely like to go back for dinner.

It must be unlucky to be famous. Just as Oliveto's fame started to grow around the country, the quality has started to go down. Sure, you can still count on basic fare like pizzas, panini sandwiches and basic pastas downstairs, but the upstairs dining room has definitely seen better days. I used to rave about this place to friends, but after one too many came back disappointed, I've stopped recommending it to people, especially for the price point.

Pros: Good service

Cons: Bland food

A floor below its more formal sister restaurant, the cafe at Oliveto feels like a delicious respite from the bustle of Rockridge, which is all the more impressive given that several of its intimate tables actually sit outside on the edge…
