House of Curries is OUTSTANDING. Their prices, service, serving size, spices, and freshness of food are all outstanding. While it's not the "fanciest" Indian restaurant, and maybe it's more Afghani/Pakistani/Indian cuisine than strictly Indian cuisine; it is my favorite restaurant in this category. It is THE bar I measure every other Indian restaurant against.
Plus the staff is friendly and helpful... parking is actually not too bad, and you can cross Ashby after you eat to go get gelato at Icii (sp?) afterwords. For awhile, back when I was addicted to Indian food, I'd eat here at least twice a week. I don't regret it.

I moved out of the East Bay when I went to college, but whenever I come home this is my first stop. I measure all other Indian food restaurants by how they compare with House of Curries. The food is delicious. My personal favorites include the Chicken Tikka Masala, Chana Masala, and the Saag Dal not to mention the Naan. For first timers it can be a little confusing because you grab your own plates, utensils, and water/chai so don't expect to be waited on hand and foot after you place your order and sit down.

My boyfriend and I are frequents there. We usually order the chicken curry and aloo ghobi and 2 naan.
They're fairly consistant except for some days their curry is watery and naan is a little cold.
Quick and friendly people. Best meal for the buck.
The best part abou it is the unlimted chai when you dine in.
I'll have to admit, they're portions are getting a little smaller than usual, which I'm assuming is due to their rapid expansion.
Nonetheless, it gets me through another day.

This place has some pretty reasonably priced quick take-out. It's just ok, but it's still a nice option in Elmwood.
The Chicken Teeka Masala tasted a bit different from others I've had. It tasted like they added too much liquid smoke. It was still ok, just not my favorite preparation.
The portions of the curry entrees are a bit small. One per person is a stretch, so think about 1.5 per person.
The rice is good and I can't say enough good things about the onion and garlic naan. Delicious!
This place is right next to Arlene's cleaners, Videots, and that Jewelry place.

I feel like they may have changed their name...Nonetheless, this is one of the few places where you can get cheap Indian food that is truly exceptional. It is a large space so there is never a wait either. Go for the Chicken Tikka Kebab (with lemon) and Paneer Tikka Masala...mmmmmm
