I want to like this museum but always end up half-liking it and half-wishing it were better. It's in a good location in SOMA with lots of nearby transit links which always helps. Nearby is the Metreon and the Moscone convention center.

The building itself is rather sadly dated looking. It was built in the late 1980s and definitely looks like it rather than timeless or innovative.

The permanent collection has a few West Coast worthies in it like Richard Diebenkorn and Robert Bechtle but otherwise it is built upon a solid backbone of the same old, same old. You have your standard issue Matisse and your standard issue Paul Klee, Magritte and De Kooning but none of them are earth-shakingly good. Merely adequate. It was as if they were purchased because a MOMA has to meet certain standards with its permanent collection. I wish museums would make merit-based acquisitions instead. The DeYoung suffers from this kind of curating convention even more so than the SFMoMA. Some of SFMoMA's new acquisitions are interesting but most of them aren't. Keep an eye out for the occasional good show like the Anselm Kiefer exhibition currently on. It's a nice retrospective but marred slightly by the hand-holding of the placards and media niches that tell you what the art is about, rather than letting you decide for yourself. I like my museums to assume I can make up my own mind on these matters and just show the work off to best effect. The cafe and museum store are very good.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a great place to take an older child for a whole day of lokoing at art. We like to do and see allthe exhibits - it takes a long time to get through everything so we try to plan what we want to see first.

This was a wonderful museum! We visited this museum on our family vacation and it was very impressive. The building is many stories high and it's just filled with art! Without a doubt it is the best musuem that I have been too. We had our young kids with us and they enjoyed it, but their attention spans did not last through the entire visit. They have all sorts of different exibits, so you can visit this museum throughout the year and see the works of different artist.

This is a great museum, but it's pretty big so you have to devote a decent chunk of your day to it in order to see everything (and justify paying the entrance fee). It is also crowded, especially when there are new exhibits. That said, I really enjoy spending a day here. The buiding itself is interesting along with the exhibits. I don't get to go much lately because I have young children and it's just too big to go with little kids.

If you like modern art and live in the area, you pretty much have to give SF MOMA a 5 rating. The museum has intersting architecture and great collection. Price of admission might be a little high but if you have never been here it is definitely worth it.
