Message from Schroeder's Cafe

The Oldest and Largest German Restaurant on the West Coast
  • Since 1893
  • Lunch, Dinner and Polka
  • Group Menus up to 300 Guests

When Henry Schroeder opened the doors of Schroeder's Restaurant in 1893 he started a tradition that has spanned over a century in San Francisco. The devastating earthquake and fire that bolted through San Francisco on April 18, 1906 destroyed the restaurant?s structure, but not its spirit. In April 1997, Jana and Stefan Filipcik, immigrants from the Czech Republic, bought Schroeder's. They come from Reichenberg, a part of Germany prior to World War II. By adding light side dishes, fish and vegetarian meals, they are proud to continue the family tradition of this special place in San Francisco. ***Please see our website for a complete history and for our polka dancing schedule and Oktoberfest dates!***

Friday Regulars  4 Star Rating - Very good

My friend and I are regulars at Schroeders on Fridays. We're usually just there for beers during our lunch breaks, so I'm not sure how the food is. The crowd is mellow & the bartender is friendly. Best time to go to Schroeders is Oktoberfest. I had an awesome time this year and the service was great. everyone had a good time.

A great german beer hall  4 Star Rating - Very good

Schroeders is my new favorite bar of the week. Its an old german beer hall that was built in 1897. They serve huge steins that hold a liter of beer, they have a good selection of traditional german beers on tap and often feature live polka bands. I went there last night as a matter of fact and I had a fantastic time! Go there! Its awesome!

Don't Do It! 1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

As a German who appreciates good food and nice people I would not recommend this place to anyone. Food was lousy, the service was extremely rude. No more words needed!

Pros: None
Cons: Food & Service

Enjoyed a Great Lunch with my Dad. 5 Star Rating - World class

Back in May, my Dad came out for a visit, and we dined at Schroeder's after shopping at Embarcadero. I had the Hungarian Goulash with Sptzle, he had the German Meatloaf. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and the space is beautiful. Murals adorn the walls, the bar and sideboards are a beautiful wood and brass, and the restaurant is lit with glowing antique German light fixtures. The place reminded us both of the types of restaurants my grandfather and great grandfather took us to in Chicago. A must try!

Pros: Great beer, beautiful space, locally owned.
Cons: Parking can be difficult

Romantic and Lively with Affable Hosts and Servers 5 Star Rating - World class

I love the big burly gentleman host with the ready smile and kindly ways. I'm just a fool for a handlebar moustache! I've lived in the City for 12 years and somehow had missed this place--I feel like Indiana Jones discovering a lost treasure! During a recent visit my friend ordered Kassler Rippchen and I'm not ashamed to say I couldn't keep my fork off of his plate! If you like to eat and you like to make merry, this is a terrific place to enjoy hearty fare and learn how to polka.

Pros: Delightful waitstaff, tasty morsels, music, and polka dancing!
Cons: Some biddy's skirt brushing your schnitzel as she whizzes by in a polka frenzy.

Tourist rip-off 1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

We came to invite my parents in law from Europe because they love german food. The owner asked us where we are from to determine our tourist status. After we paid the waitress came back complaining that we didn't give her enough tip, showing us bills from other guests and even bringing a calculator. Although I'm german, but living in the States, I'm familiar with the tip procedure and know that this was not only completely rude but not legal either. It put me in an embarrasing situation and we left the restaurant with an awkward feeling. Other than that the food is very americanised. I won't recommand the restaurant to my friends.

My experience was quite different 5 Star Rating - World class

I went to Schroeder's on a Friday night at about 7pm and I could barely squeeze in. There must have been over 200 people dancing to a band that featured a great female accordion player. Everyone seemed to be having a great time and the people that were having dinner were chowing down with gusto. Yes, it's not Chez Panisse but DUH! I love the Goulash.
And on some occasions they feature Pinkelwurst!
