The ambiance in here feels like rural Chinese provinces. I love that earthy feel and the hearty meals. A perfect place for a night out in the town.

The food is good and I tried that honey shrimp today after reading a review and it was yummy. Prices are reasonable and the food comes out hot and steaming. I love the building and the fountain out front too. Very elegant. But the service has gone down hill in recent years unless you are asian. I watched two asian couples get sat today before us and they came in after but seemed to know the staff. I was actually better off getting the male waiter (only one and only non-asian) because I had my order out first and with a smile. I also observed that he got my drinks up much faster. I will ask for him again because sometimes I avoid this place because of the staff. I have nothing against asians at all but this one waitress in particular here is not kind and even sits down and eats in her uniform and this is like at noon so she could not have been here all day. I think she has something against my color or accent. I finally spoke to the owner, a pretty asian woman and not a man as someone wrote named Miss Kim. I don't want free food, just good service.

It's no surprise that this restaurant has received numerous awards year after year for "Best Chinese Restaurant in Monterey"! The service is always fast and the waitstaff is very friendly. The building itself is a work of art (both inside and out) and the atmosphere is a casual one that welcomes families.

Try the succulent honey walnut prawns or the heavenly sizzling rice soup for a sumptuous treat. You also can't go wrong with the crab meat fried wontons.. Treat yourself and thank me later!

i went here with family and friends. the staff was extremely rude. one of the asian waitresses talked to my aunt in such a child-like demeaning and condesending way that made me sick.the food was brought out one at a time (we all ordered our own things, so it would be rude to eat without the rest of the table). There was practically nothing in my sizzling rice soup. The plates were dirty. my aunt and my mother ordered 2 small rice bowls, and the waitress brought back 1 small bowl. she stated that if they wanted more to just ask for it. my friend had a *scoop* of the rice (2 bitefuls, if that), and when we got the bill my mom, aunt, and my friend were all charged 3.50 which was ridiculous. she should of never charged my friend for his *scoop* of rice. i advise you to check your bill for shady charges such as this.to charge 3 people 10.50 for rice is unheard of. then of course at the end, she's all nice because she wants a good tip. She made me sick. they lost in the long run. they lost 6 good customers, and the many people we will share this with.i dont know if the same owner owns the salinas and freemont restraunts, but the salinas one is great. clean, friendly, better quality of food compared to the freemont one. i recommend the salinas one 100 percent . DO NOT waste your time or money at the freemont one...

Pros: no pros whatsoever

Cons: bad service, shady will the bill, DIRTY!

This restaurant was recommended to us by a number of people when we moved into the area over a year ago. Since then, we have enjoyed dining at Chef Lee's a number of times and often bring family here when they are visiting from out of town. The Honey Walnut Prawns and the Sweet & Sour Chicken are my personal favorites, but I have enjoyed every meal that I've had at this restaurant.

We had a large dinner group eat dinner here and let me tell you: The service was bad! The wait-staff was slow. I had ordered the meal ahead of time (one week). But it actually didn't do any good - I had to go through the menu selection again. When it came time to ask for take-out containers and assistances with packing up the left-over, they started to help but stop and left us to do it ourselves after they were paid for the food. And this was after they added the 15% tip for services NOT rendered!!!! (almost $100). Not everyone understood English and it was very frustrating trying to express our desires. We had dirty forks (dried rice between the tongs of the fork) and re-used dirty cloth napkins that had grease spots on them. We had to have all the tables re-set with clean tableware!Management wouldn't even listen to the dissatisfied service problems we had and just didn't even care! I would highly NOT recommend this place to large groups. A very disappointing experience!!!!

This restaurant is the absolute best. I recommend this restaurant to everyone who visits the Monterey Peninsula. The staff is friendly, the food is delicious and always nice and hot, the setting is beautiful, and the prices are cheap.

Contrary to Elise H.'s comment about Chef Lee's serving pigeon, that is a blatant lie. She is mistaking this restaurant for ICHI RIKI'S ON DEL MONTE AVENUE. They were the ones that served pigeon and passed it off as Chicken.

Chef Lee's normally uses MSG in their food, but if you don't want the MSG, ASK THEM TO NOT PUT MSG IN THE FOOD YOU ORDERED. Simple as that. The staff treats you like family.

By the way, the owner is a very nice older gentleman. So she was also lying about the "woman" who came and yelled at her.

She also mentioned that Cathy's had a foreign object in the food... WAS IT A FINGER TOO?!

Next restaurant she eats at, she'll probably put her own pubic hair in it and say that she was served with it in her food.

Elise was probably trying to just get a FREE meal. If you want a free meal, eat out of a garbage can.

The food is salty and you can taste the MSG. The meat is questionable, because 10 years ago they were closed down for serving pigeons. The owners did change however.
So, I did go there once because my friend came into town and wanted to eat some chinese. I would usually go to Cathy's in Monterey but, the last time I went there, there was foreign pieces of food in my chicken fried rice.

Anyway, we ordered food, it was very NASTY TASTING, but I had ordered a to go for my husband at the same time that we ordered our food. Once I tasted the food I tried to cancel my order, but the waitress told me that I couldn't because they already made it. I was confused as to why they would make my to go at the same time I our food that we are eating there was made. (aren't they suppose to make it in the middle or end of our meal?). Anyways, I told her no I didn't want it and then the owner came out with a pissed off look on her face. I told her that I didn't like that the food tasted too much like MSG, and didn't want my to go, and she basically said, too bad. So, as I was paying at the register the waitress told me that I'd have to pay for everything. The owner saw me paying and came and stood behind the waitress (who was pretty nice about the situation and apologized for us not liking the food). The owner hovered behind the waitress as I reviewed my bill, and just had the most pissed off look on her face. I said I'm only paying for what we ordered here. I will not take the to go and will not pay for it. The owner basically pushed the waitress out the way and her face turned red as she said, "You ordered!!! YOU PAY!! I said , NO it's nasty and I won't! So I layed $50 (which just our meal alone was $47) I left the waitress a $10 tip, and I hope that she got to keep it .
