The Nijiya Market on Sawtelle is that small Japanese grocery store hidden in the corner. The selection and variety is great for it's size, and the prices are not bad at all. If you are looking for a bento, or perhaps an asian beverage, this is the place to make a short visit to. Not only is the grocery itself a good place to drop by, but all the stores around it are interesting as well.

Though I am not from Japan, I sense that Nijaya Market has a lot of authentic Japanese products based on the store's popularity, their clientele, and the number of packages that are devoid of English labels. I like to go here for the melon bread in the baked goods section. They have a decent selection of sake (but only accept California ID's). They are open until 11pm daily, and you might be better off going late, because parking is difficult here. You will most likely have to park in the underground garage (free).

All your Japanese grocery needs are here in the heart of the little Japanese area on Sawtelle in West Los Angeles. I get the Mochi Ice Cream here because they have all the different kinds and the price is cheaper than anywhere else you'll find. They have great Japanese candies, pastries, breads, and ramens, too.

Japanese Grocery
by Anonymous
This is a Japanese grocery store that carries many Japanese kind of food that you cannot find in other places. They have snacks, fresh vegetables, sashimi, fish, meat, some ready to go meal packages. You can also get the red bean and green tea ice-cream from here. There are also Japanese magazines and other personal care products.

Driving all the way to Little Tokyo can be very time consuming. If you've never been to Sawtelle in the Santa Monica area, you should. There are tonnes of Japanese restaurants - Shabu Shabu houses, sushi places and even a few chic and modern Japanese fusion restaurants. Nijiya Market is located in a little plaza right on Sawtelle, opposite Volcano Tea (if you've never been here, you should as well). Though small in size, they do have a variety of Japanese groceries to choose from. Most importantly, if you're a jelly fan, they have the best fruit jellies here!
