The Nijiya Market on Sawtelle is that small Japanese grocery store hidden in the corner. The selection and variety is great for it's size, and the prices are not bad at all. If you are looking for a bento, or perhaps an asian beverage, this is the place to make a short visit to. Not only is the grocery itself a good place to drop by, but all the stores around it are interesting as well.

Beware of the con-artists who run the Nijiya center parking.

You are supposed to get an hour of free parking if you are shopping at Nijiya,...but don't count on it.

Last Saturday, I was shopping with my wife and I parked in the parking lot as usual. As I was about to leave, I rolled down the window to show the parking attendant my receipt. An old man approached me and started asking me weird questions about getting a massage at a massage parlor. What a creep!

I had only parked at the center for forty-five minutes, but he rudely insisted that I was parked for over an hour and that I wasn't shopping at the Nijiya market, but that I was visiting a massage parlor!

After I showed him my grocery receipt, he simply said, "you shopped too long". He demanded I pay him $1.75. I gave him two dollars, he took it, but he refused to give me change.

Don't let these con-men take advantage of you! Shame on them.

Pros: Produce, Seafood

Cons: Parking Scam

I love this market, possibly more for the experience of wandering around its aisles than anything else. After eating elsewhere on Sawtelle, I'll very often stop in here to pick up some kind of fun sweet for dessert. Aside from having an impressive selection of authentic Japanese groceries crammed into a relatively small (but very clean!) space, there's also a huge array of adorably packaged sweets and a good selection of products for the home and kitchen. The last time I was there, there were about four different ladies handing out generous sized samples, which were all delicious! The prices are very reasonable, too!

Pros: Fun, Good Selection of Unique Products

Authentic japanese supermarket. Small but good selection. I usally get some frozen dumplings, kobe beef (their meat and seafood is very reasonably priced), and some Japanese dessert treats. Fun to wander around, make fun of the wacky packaging, and throw random things in your cart. While you're there, get a cream puff at Mousse Fantasy/Beard Pappa in the same mini mall complex.

Though I am not from Japan, I sense that Nijaya Market has a lot of authentic Japanese products based on the store's popularity, their clientele, and the number of packages that are devoid of English labels. I like to go here for the melon bread in the baked goods section. They have a decent selection of sake (but only accept California ID's). They are open until 11pm daily, and you might be better off going late, because parking is difficult here. You will most likely have to park in the underground garage (free).

All your Japanese grocery needs are here in the heart of the little Japanese area on Sawtelle in West Los Angeles. I get the Mochi Ice Cream here because they have all the different kinds and the price is cheaper than anywhere else you'll find. They have great Japanese candies, pastries, breads, and ramens, too.

This is a Japanese grocery store that carries many Japanese kind of food that you cannot find in other places. They have snacks, fresh vegetables, sashimi, fish, meat, some ready to go meal packages. You can also get the red bean and green tea ice-cream from here. There are also Japanese magazines and other personal care products.

Driving all the way to Little Tokyo can be very time consuming. If you've never been to Sawtelle in the Santa Monica area, you should. There are tonnes of Japanese restaurants - Shabu Shabu houses, sushi places and even a few chic and modern Japanese fusion restaurants. Nijiya Market is located in a little plaza right on Sawtelle, opposite Volcano Tea (if you've never been here, you should as well). Though small in size, they do have a variety of Japanese groceries to choose from. Most importantly, if you're a jelly fan, they have the best fruit jellies here!

This is a small japanese market but it has almost all your japanese grocerey needs. I love coming here to buy bento which are japanese lunch boxes. It is always freshly made and tastes homemade (which they are) and i recommend getting them in the morning or for lunch when you don't have the time. Also its convienent and clean. It's almost like those convinent stores in Japan. There are few japanese markets in LA area where i live but I compare to everywhere else, i love this place and i recommend everyone to go shopping there.
