I found that Karate Kids very helpful i teaching my grandson respect, discipline, following directions and working with others. He looks forward to every class we can attend and is unhappy when we cannot attend.
The facility, personnel are first class and will help with all of our needs.

My 4 year old loves Karate class at Dawn Barnes. he attends the encino and sherman oaks location sometimes. The sensei's really focus on the kids trying their best and showning good respect. We use the skills they are learning at home and with friends and family. He really looks forward to going to his classes there.

Pros: positive messages, structure

Cons: sometimes class sizes can get too big for little kids

My Child has been going to Dawn Barnes Karate Kids in Encino for a number of years and I have to say it has been a great experience. He has gained confidence and has develped some great life skills that he will carry with him through the rest of his life.

He has built a great relationship and has such respect for his sensei and the rest of the Encino staff. The curriculum continues to improve and seems to always be ahead of the curve of some of the other leading studios in Los Angeles.

I've always found the facilities to be very well maintained and the staff to be extremely thoughtful, friendly and caring.

We absolutely love Dawn Barnes Karate Kids. Having recently moved to Calabasas, California, we feel very fortunate to have found this Karate school. Our son who is 11 yrs. old loves, loves, loves going to class and that just says it all:)

The staff is professional and friendly. The class schedule is more than accommodating and flexible. The program is excellent and affordable. There are many locations that make it easy to get to class even if you're in another city! I could go on and on about this school. We feel blessed to have our child in such a positive and nurturing environment.

These days it is important to teach kids to be aware without scaring them of strangers. This program has helped my little girl feel strong, and unafraid, though she knows how to avoid potential fights or "problem people." The teachers are educated and kind, yet clear, about showing kids the value of rules, coping strategies, and respecting the rights of others as well as themselves.

I love the consistency and individual differences between senseis and locations. It is a great help in bolstering my daughter's self confidence. She also gets regular postive reinforcement for being kind to us at home, well worth the cost!

OK, I admit I was fooled into thinking this was a good deal for my kids, with the "child friendly" colors and dumbed-down (well, it is) martial arts that are being taught in this chain. Don't fall for the facade, this company is counting on you to fall for it and sign a one year contract with a forty dollar penalty if you leave early. Don't get me wrong, most of the Sensei instructors are first-rate, we loved them, but that's not a result of the management of Dawn Barnes. In fact the fantastic qualities of the instructors are not at all reflected in the egotistical management style of the company. Go into a Dawn Barnes school today....do you see any photos of the wonderful Senseis who teach there? Any recognition of their multiple black belts and competitive accomplishments? No, and that's because the mgmt doesn't think that is important. But you will see a dozen photos of the CEO on the walls. This company overcharges and purposely decelerates what would be a normal belt-to-belt progression for your child. There is a class action suit against this company because of some of their questionable tactics with employees -- meetings with no pay anyone? If you want pretty and pricey romper room martial arts, and you don't mind building the profits of a company with unfair employment practices, go for it. If you really want your child to excel and grow in Shotokan Karate skills (or any other martial arts), go somewhere else. Do your research first!

What a great place, a friend told me about the school and how much her kids liked it, so I decided to take my 6 year old here. He really likes the classes so far, and he seems more focused now that he has been going. I hope he sticks with it.

My son is a changed boy since joining Karate Kids. Not only does he love it but he's learning so many important things. It's great exercise for the mind and soul. Not cheap but definitely worth every penny. The staff is knowledgeable and courteous.
