I am really amazed that these guys are here in the city. I can always go here and they will have a fresh batch of loaves on the rack ready for their customers.

This is really a good place to be in the morning, the smell alone is enough to pick you right up, and I just love the smell of good baking in the morning.

I never thought that I would go for a place like this one. They have a great selection of bread in here. There are also dinner rolls and they have some of the best pastries out there.

Hot tip: their famous bread is only available Tuesday through Sunday after five o'clock in full or half loaves and sells out fast. I recommend getting there at 4:50PM day of.

Second inside tip: You can also pre-order bread two days in advance. If you do that you can by-pass the line and pre-order and pick up right at the register.

Also, their double pain au chocolat is the best you'll get outside of Paris. On the weekend, they open at 9AM and sellout of the first batch by 10AM. The next batch won't be good to go for another 40 minutes. That has happened to me. The upside? You can pick up a warm buttery croissant.

They consistently make the best pies and our favorite is the lemon tart. Everything is fresh daily and at a fantastic level but I have often circled for 20 minutes just to find a parking space 6 blocks away! but it is worth it.

I recently visited this bakery during a day in the city last week. I had read rave reviews of this in magazines and food columns and had really been looking forward to trying it out. The baked goods were delish, but the chocolate cake I really wanted to try was "not being served by the slice today". I'll have to agree with the other reviewers that the staff there is not very friendly and bordered on rude. It was also very busy there and hard to peruse the items to see what you wanted when the line kept forming and pushing around you. Since they didn't sell the chocolate cake I wanted by the slice (even though the sign said they did) I tried a passionfruit cake that disappointed. It was very very sweet- perhaps would of been good checked by a strong black coffee but I'm not a coffee drinker so I gave up on it after two bites (my two kids also rejected it after a bite each). While I didn't like that one I could tell these were top quality baked goods- the cake was light and airy and the frosting was smooth and not greasy. We also sampled their macaroons, Mexican wedding cookies and few other small items- all were great. I had wanted to try their bread but did not note it for sale when we were there- I don't know if we just came at the wrong time of day or if the just weren't selling it that day.Side note: if you're in the area check out Bi-Rite market down the street. We grabbed some sandwiches from their upscale deli (since the menu at Tartine for lunch was very limited and not kid friendly). Bi-rite had some great stuff and tables out front and they're opening an ice cream shop this summer.

PROS: Top quality baked goods- nice neighborhood off of the mission
CONS: staff is indifferent to rude and does not inhance your experience-v. busy

Tartine Bakery sells some really good treats but unfortunately the store gets really crowded. Its quite a popular bakery with all their savory sweets and fresh baked breads that you can get warm off the oven in the afternoon. Parking is a pain though and they only have a handful of tables and chairs to sit at.

This corner bakery's two wall-size windows make for lots of natural light, an airy atmosphere, and good people-watching (assuming you can find a place to sit). More a destination than a place to linger, be prepared to stand in line while…
