Big portions and a long wait for brunch with that being said it is worth it. The food is good and the staff is nice. If you're visiting SD it is worth a visit.

Good place to come for breakfast, but come hungry because the portions are huge. Also, there is usually a long line, so reserve or be prepared to wait.

excessive portions, wait times, and prices.

the food is good. so what? does that justify waiting 45 minutes to get a table for 2 for a weekend brunch, and spending $11 for a pancake? Why is the pancake so expensive? Is it made with rare or organic ingredients? no, it's just enormous. The editorial review says it right there - BEHEMOTH portions. What is wrong with people? Large is fine. But BEHEMOTH? no thanks. I could have gone to Denny's and ate a normal pancake of comparable qulaity for $5.50, then threw another pancake in the garbage for $5.50. Brunch for 2, no mimosas or anything, came to over $50. literally, what a waste.

The portions here are huge (think italian family dining portions, only it's a serving for ONE here). This place is really busy and is best known for their breakfast items. Their pancakes are the size of manhole covers (not exaggerating). Cute place, good for groups (make reservations for more than 4), and pretty decent service.

One of the first weekends my wife and I lived in San Diego, we heard rave reviews of this place for breakfast. Having dined there, I'm not sure if we would ever go back. We were warned to get their early (especially on Sundays) otherwise be prepared to wait. We got there at about 10am, and had about an hour plus wait. When we finally got seated, we were fairly disappointed by the service. Considering we had waited so long, the least the place could have done was be attentive to our needs. This was not the case. The food itself was pretty decent, with HUGE portions for sure. Of course, you would expect huge portions when you're playing 15-20 per dish. All in all, I don't think I would go back. It's too crowded, the service is inadequate, and it's more of a place to be seen, rather than to eat.

Hash House has consistently (the 2 times I've been there) gave me the best breakfast experience of my life. The service is great (think friendly, normal-sized suicide girls,) the atmosphere is original (farm/industrial,) and the portions are HUGE. I had "Lou's Special" (I think it was Lou,) a large platter of creamy mashed potatoes, topped with a fresh baked buttermilk biscuit, then spicy crab cakes, topped with an egg, and smothered in a SPICY hollandaise. That'll wake you up! It was beautifully garnished and served with a slice of juicy, sweet watermelon. The woman next to me had a Captain Crunch pancake the size of a Frisbee. Wow.
The only downside is the price. For two of us it cost almost $40. In Indiana, where one of the owners is from, TWENTY dollars could feed four people a breakfast big enough to fuel them all day, pay the tab, and have change to leave a tip and pay for parking. Oh that's right, they don't have to pay for parking in Indiana!
Anyway, I digest...
Just go- it's worth it. Just know before you go!

Based on the reviews of this restaurant, my family and I were eager to try this place out. We were extremely disappointed with the food. Yes, you get huge portions, but that is not a positive thing when the food is bland and over priced. My family paid over $70 for 4 people for breakfast! The huge plates and portions you receive might distract some people from the quality of food, but not us.
On a positve note, the service was good, atmosphere was warm and inviting.
If you are visiting San Diego and want a good breakfast, avoid this place. This is a tourist trap, big on hype, little on taste.

My original intention was to visit this place for its mouth-watering breakfast menu, but due to time constraints, my family ended up here for dinner - sure glad it worked out that way! The service was super-friendly, attentive, and very efficient. The cuisine is American comfort with a few modern alterations, e.g. heirloom tomato w/pesto and asparagus spears instead of peas & carrots. Before the entrees arrived, we were served warm buttermilk biscuits with honey & butter. Each of our main dishes was more than enough to satisfy two people: halibut w/cornmeal battered shrimp, a mushroom & swiss burger w/gooey macaroni & cheese, and their popular meatloaf with a red pepper, spinach & cheese "filling." The dishes were well-prepared and flavorful, but the portions overwhelming. The ambience was casual, but nice enough to bring a date. I will have to try their breakfast next time!

Sometimes I feel as though the ginormous portions detract from the skillful preperation of the food. The menu is innovative and easy to navigate and who could resist the likes of their house scrambles? with sure fire hits like smoked salmon, basil pesto, fresh tomato and melted brie, or the farmhouse hash meatloaf, roasted red peppers and smoked mozzarella? Although one can't help but be dazzled and giant eyed when the plate comes out...didn't you kind of sit there and wonder where all of that left over grub went? seems like kind of a waste...then again...i suppose you can always take it home or fedex it overseas and feed most third world countries.

Without a doubt, Hash House has the best breakfast in the city. Granted, the lines can be atrocious on a Saturday or Sunday morning, but even a 30-minute wait in the mid-summer morning sun shouldn't deter you from trying any of the fabulous and gigantic offerings at this Hillcrest Restaurant.

The plates and the food they carry are so bountiful that one dish can easily feed two hungry people. But why wouldn't you rather have the rest the next day (or for dinner that night)??

Best bet: Try the fried chicken quesadilla with the spicy chipotle sauce - even if it doesn't appear on the menu that day, the kitchen is usually delighted to accommodate you!

Though the wait on weekends for breakfast can be a long time (30-1 hour) the food makes up for it and makes you realize why many of the people do not mind waiting for a table. I like going there for breakfast on weekends and love their service. Whenever i go there, i sometimes will get the same waiter/waitress and to my surprise they'll know my usual (truck driver combo w/ the strawberry corn flake pancakes). Portions are huge, you will always have to take food home and it can always last you up until dinner time!. I'd suggest that you split a plate w/ a partner if you don't have too big of an apetite. If you're a pancake person and like different things then this place is for you, they have snickers pancakes, the strawberry corn flake pancakes, granola type pancakes, and if you want yours plain and simple they have that too. Not just pancakes either, but they also have different types of hash, cereal, different types of eggs benedicts, scrambles and so much more which are also all really good. the only downside that i can think about is that with it being such a busy place, it can sometimes get too noisy for you to hear the conversation you're in, but once your food is brought to you, you'll more than likely stop talking and be more focused on the food =)

The wait is really long on Sat. and Sun. mornings, but it's really good. The plates of food are absolutely enormous--I had breakfast, took home the leftovers, and had enough for both lunch and dinner. There are lots of creative twists with the food, the presentation is cool (rosemary sprigs everywhere, huge marshmallows in the giant hot chocolate, etc), and the food is really tasty. Everyone should have brunch here at least once!

Hash House A Gogo is amazing. It is always very busy, espically on weekends for breakfast. Their prices are very good. Their portions are huge! Their breakfast seems to draw the largest crowd but their dinners are excellent. One plate is enough to feed two people. They have a bar and a comfortable atmosphere. They do private parties as well.

The plates at this place are huge, and they are filled with an abundance of yummy food. I've been here for both breakfast and dinner, and have not been dissapointed. reservations are recommended for this popular spot. They recently opened a store in Las Vegas as well. A little more expensive than the normal breakfast place, but worth every penny.

Hungry for some hearty tasty food? Hash House A Gogo literally has plates bigger than your head. For the amount of food that you receive, the price is really good! The only con would be the fact that the restaurant is rather small so the wait can be awhile, but it's well worth it. I definitely suggest the duck breast. Deeelish!

This is by far the best breakfast place I've ever been to. Apparently they also have a lunch and dinner menu, but that's not what they're known for. Be prepared to wait, espeically on the weekends, unless you have a reservation. Also, be forewarned that everything is huge from the food to the silverware. Their pancakes are amazing, but whenever I venture out and try something new I am just as amazed. The staff members are friendly enough, and are good about refilling drinks. The food comes out relative quick. Parking is on the street at the meter's, so bring some change. This place is the best!

The Hash House A Gogo is a great breakfast stop. I have only eaten here for breakfast. It is a little bit on the high end as far as prices go, but you get ENORMOUS amounts of food, so it is well worth it.
There are lines pretty often, and you have to wait usually ten minutes or more. i would definitely recommend calling ahead to put your name in.
Their pancakes... honestly bigger than your face. I kid you not... don't believe me? Go and see
