First-timers will expect Berkeley to be like this, so why shatter their illusions? Your first stop should be Revolution Books. Not only will you find books (on widely varying subjects, not just anarchy), but there are also magazines and newsletters, gifts, bumper stickers, and posters. The guy behind the counter (I assume he's the owner) will chat you up about current events, which is awesome. He might also try to sell you some little newsletter or whatever, which is a little less awesome, but I like to support this place anyway. I brought my parents here when they came to visit, and they left with all sorts of posters and stuff that you can probably only find in Berkeley.

The owner of this store feels okay with overcharging for his books, but will work with you (very accomodating) to help you find what you are looking for.

Specialty books and whatever else you are not able to find at nearby Ned's and ASUC bookstore you will most likely be able to get here. Get used to the friendly service here. You will come by great help here.

Inside, the place has the makings of a typical, low-key mom 'n pop outfit. Nothing too spectacular, but it is located in a prime location for most Berkeley students.

PROS: Great service, great location
CONS: mediocre prices at best

Definitely a part of, and capitalizing on, the Berkeley mistique of protest and uprising, Revoluion Books focuses on literature about social revolutions. Featured are titles from the Communist Party, Mao, Marx & Lenin, plus related memorabilia (T-shirts, buttons & stickers). If you want to wrap your head around writings about social uprisings, historical and contemporary, this is the place to go (a niche bookstore).

While Revolution has a limited general book selection, this is not the place to go for broader titles; head to Cody's two blocks away.

PROS: the revolution lives on!
CONS:
