I have limited experience with photography and even less with selecting film, memory sticks and printing. But I really wanted to be able to take some reasonably good pictures on vacation of friends and family. I was helped by a very nice and informative young lady at the counter. She took the time to find out what my experience level and equipment was and what I was hoping to do. She made several recommendations and did not push me into something for the sale. I ended up purchasing everything she suggested and was happy to see it was perfect for my vacation. Thanks for helping me capture the memories. I will come back there all the time for the service alone. It is nice to have someone help you and not SELL you!

I went here with a fellow photographer friend and we both spent more money than I care to admit! I was so torn between two models of DSLR's and purchased one from Rebecca on the first day of their no tax sale...the place was insanely busy, but she didn't rush us at all and was very personable. I went back a couple of days later because, I changed my mind!! Always go with your first instinct.. why I defy that, I don't know. The manager and the salesperson both helped me, exchanged my items with a smile on their face, stayed after closing to finish up my transaction and were extremely gracious and knowledgeable! I can't complain a bit .. they were all terrific! I will definitely go back to Samy's ... especially during their sales! High marks for all of them.... highly patient and informative without being pushy! Thanks :)

In particular, the staff at the photo printing counter have been extremely helpful and I mean everything from "are you able to work that kiosk?" to calling me up to tell me that the photofinishing lab thinks the color corrections I input are too funky, so they want me to bring in my originals so they can best match the colors. After going to best buy to find a HD camcorder I went to Samy's to do some comparative shopping & while they were busy I found the staff to be very knowledgeable and helpful. Not only were they running a no tax promotion but as they were out of the advertised unit they upgraded me to the next model up at the same price. Walked out paying over $100 less then Best Buy wanted for the next model down(on sale). I will be back for my next SLR, tripod and possibly a new 3D camcorder.

This is the second Samy's I have been to. The first was Fairfax to make a purchase and also to attend a free intro class for the Canon T1i I got. The seond was Pasadena to get another lens.
First of all, after reading so many diverse reviews on the staff one can get a little skeptical or intimidated by going in. STOP READING REVIEWS AND EXPERIENCE IT FOR YOURSELF.
This was my first DSLR purchase and the staff at Fiarfax was thourough and understanding of my needs. All my questions were answered and I never felt intimidated. 5 stars.
Now on to Pasadena. The store is a lot smaller but had plenty of parking. I saw the camara I bought advertised with a second lens at the same price I paid and wanted them to match it. I walked in and the place was packed. Took a number and waited. There were 17 numbers ahead of me.. My wait was only about 30-35 minutes. Then I got Kevin. Kevin answered all my questions and was extremely helpful in getting the deal matched with a big assist from Michelle. He then informed me about the Canon rebate on the Pro 9000 printer that was going on. I said write it up. As Kevin was doing the paperwork he answered all the general questions about photography, that a novice could ask, with ease and confidence that I could understand. Please remember there are tons of people waiting to get served and I 'm sure the sales staff is judged by their results but Kevin made me and my wife feel like we were the only customers in the store! 5+Stars.
Samy's is the only place I will shop for my photog gear and info and Kevin will always be our first choice for customer service but if he's not there you can't go wrong with any of the staff at Fairfax or Pasadena.

Its been hit or miss for me at Samy's Pasadena. Sometimes the staff is great and sometimes they suck "sweetbreads". At least they are equal opportunity discriminators. They discriminate equally against everyone regardless of if you are buying a point and shoot, or a full professional studio full of cameras and equipment.

Samy's has the worst staff I have ever dealt with. They are over priced and have the worst, the WORST return policy a company could have. Most people who work there walk around like they are doing you a favor when they they stop to "help" you when they do not even know how half of what the store carries works. There are cheaper places online and you need not have to deal with morons who take a month to return your money on an unopened product.

Here is an example, I asked the rock behind the counter about the quality of this steadicam I was holding, and replies snarkerly, "I wouldn't try doing a pull focus with it". OK, genius, first that is not a reply about the quality of the product and second if you knew anything about cinematography, you would use a steadicam for that type of shot.
So, my advise for you shoppers out their is to go to the store to try the product out and then buy online. You will around 60% from whatever they quote you.

You cant beat their hours -- open 7 days. Certainly convenient if you need to pick up any camera accessories at the last minute, instead of ordering online and waiting for the UPS guy to show up. Some salespeoples are less than helpful. But others have been very knowledgeable and easy to talk to.

I walked into Samys excited to see a "full service" camera store in Pasadena. You can almost always get better prices on the web, but I'm willing to pay that extra "brick & mortar" premium for hands-on advice, and of course the immediate gratification of walking out the door with my new stuff! But I will never go to Samys again. You walk in and there is an immediate air of intimidation. The people behind the counter are rude, and not willingly helpful. They have the same arrogant disinterest that I imagine you would find behind the counter of a gun shop! And the knowledge of some of these guys is definitely questionable. I'm making the leap from film to digital and I asked a simple question about 1.6 crop factor, and they guy was either too inconvenienced by such a lame question, or simply didn't care, or didn't know the answer, I'm not sure which. They also have that sales tactic of quoting a price that is ridiculously high, and then "seeing what they can do". I find this old-school sales strategy inherently dishonest and a waste of my time. Just put a fair price on the item and let me know what it is, instead of seeing how much you can squeeze out of me! So when they quoted a price for a lens that was 20% higher than what I had seen on the web, I knew this place was wrong. 20% premium AND lousy customer service? come on! So I walked out with a 30.00 lens hood. (I needed it,) but when I got home it was cracked! So the next day I brought it back, with the receipt and explained the situation to some thug behind the counter who was mean-mugging me the whole time. He didn't say anything, turned around opened a drawer, grabbed a new lens hood and TOSSED the box on the counter in-front of me, "THWAP!" Well shoot, at least they made the exchange! I was expecting them to accuse me of breaking the thing! In all fairness, there was one guy who WAS helpful and very nice. But that is 1 out of 4 guys total that I dealt with. NOT RECOMMENDED.

I walked into Samys excited to see a "full service" camera store in Pasadena. You can almost always get better prices on the web, but I'm willing to pay that extra "brick & mortar" premium for hands-on advice, and of course the immediate gratification of walking out the door with my new stuff! But I will never go to Samys again. You walk in and there is an immediate air of intimidation. The people behind the counter are rude, and not willingly helpful. They have the same arrogant disinterest that I imagine you would find behind the counter of a gun shop! And the knowledge of some of these guys is definitely questionable. I'm making the leap from film to digital and I asked a simple question about 1.6 crop factor, and they guy was either too inconvenienced by such a lame question, or simply didn't care, or didn't know the answer, I'm not sure which. Great Selections for pros and kids alike. The price is not too bad if you buy on sale.However, I have the misfortune to get Kevin, a staff that has a attitude, as if he is doing me a favor by selling me a camera, and told me to my face that he has no time to devote as much as 20 minutes to me, since don't I see how many other customers are waiting for his sevices????? He repeated the "20 minutes' four times to me, He said: "what if I spent a whole 20 minutes with you and you decide not to buy, I would be wasting my time, wouldn't I ??" My last visit to Samys was quite disappointing. My friend and I just got back from Las Vegas and instead of going straight home decided to go to Samys to get some stuff we have been itching to get. We go there on 12/24/07, with 4min to spare. We knew what we wanted, we weren't there to window whop. If we were, we wouldn't have gone . My friend asks the salesman for a -1 diopter and was told that they don't make those. He replied, "Ritz said that they could order one for me. I was wondering if you happened to have one in stock" Suddenly the salesman replied that he could order one but that there wouldn't be a return policy because it was a specialized item. When it was my turn, I asked if they had the battery grip for the Rebel XT in stock. He told me that it had been discontinued. I said, "The BG-E3?", making sure that we were talking about the battery grip and not the camera itself. He told that the BG-E3 was not compatible with the Rebel XT (the whole time with an attitude, this was an older man). My response was that I had read somewhere that the BG-E3 was compatible with both cameras. I asked if I could see to make sure if it did or didn't fit the camera. With more attitude, a sigh and a roll of eyes, he went off to find one. Like a frustrated child, he opened the drawer and rustled though it, making some noise, and found one. Opened the box, and fitted it onto the camera and what a surprise, it fit like a glove. If it wasn't for the fact that all the other camera shops were already closed, I would've told him, "You may be right, I'm not sure if it is compatible. Thanks anyway" but instead I bought it. I think that this was the same person I spoke to when I called a couple of weeks earlier regarding the Canon 18-55mm IS lens, I had called to get an in-store price(it would've been easier if they have their in-store price with their on-line price on their website), and was told that Canon doesn't make such a lens. I told the rep that I read that Canon did and in return he told me that the lens was probably not out yet or that they didn't carry it. This would've been fine except that I was looking at the lens description on their website. I said thanks and hanged up. I could've done with out the attitude. I have 3 other camera shops to pick from, I went to Samys because of pleasant past experience. I understand that it's C-mas eve and it's real close to closing, but I wasn't there to window shop. I knew what I needed and wanted to get in and get out. If he had just sold me the item right away without the attitude, it would've gone by faster. Unless Samys is saving me a significant amount of money, I'm avoiding this place from now on.

Many of the people working at Samy's of Pasadena are severely in need of attitude adjustments. I've finally decided that avoiding these attitudes along with inflated pricing is worth a longer drive.
