Thanks to Newton Plumbing, $190 of my money went down the drain. I called them to come out and fix a leak in my ceiling. The guy they sent out told me the leak was coming from the fire sprinkler and I needed to call someone else to fix it because he wasn't licensed to work on fire sprinklers. So I called a company that specializes in fixing fire sprinklers, they charged me $190 only to tell me that no, it wasn't the fire sprinkler. Turns out it was a hot water pipe. I asked Newton Plumbing if they would reimburse me for the $190. They told me they would forward my request to management. I never heard back from them. I contacted them again and they said the owner was out of the office handling personal matters. Very frustrating.

Newton would have received 5 stars but they showed up TOO early for me. They got to my house before I did. No problem. I had a big mess of leakage in my basement and it flooded everything. The quote was reasonable and the work was warranted. They did a great job overall!

I've known the Newton family for a long time. They are under new management now but that hasn't changed the way they do business. They have always been very reliable and fair to us in regards to price and service. Our water heater broken so we called them right away. They were able to stop by an hour after I called. They quickly diagnosed the issues, replaced some thermo thing and he was on his way. SO happy they were able to fix it so quickly!!

Our water heater went out over the weekend. I didn't even know until I turned on the shower. The water started getting warm so I got in assuming it would get hot. It didn't. That was the worst shower ever!

I then tried lighting the water heater, but it wouldn't stay lit. I went online and researched it and thought it might be the thermocouple. I called my landlord and she said she'd send someone right over. Her "handyman" came over and he did the exact same thing that I did and said I needed to find someone else to fix it. What a wasted trip.

I called my landlord back and she said that she didn't have a regular plumber and that maybe I could find one I found these guys, Newton Plumbing, on the internet. I told them the problem and they said it might be the thermocouple. I didn't mention that because I wanted to see if they were reputable. So far so good.

They said they would call and come over first thing in the morning (it was Saturday night already). I thought that was fine since I already had my cold shower for the day! They called early Sunday morning (a little too early for a Sunday morning) and came about an hour after that. He replaced the thermocouple in about 30 minutes and the thing fired right up.

I don't know how much it was. My landlord came and paid the guy. She was happy though and said she'd use them in the future.

Total scam. It's your basic "give a low quote over the phone and then use some excuse to jack up the price when on site" situation. Our kitchen sink wasn't draining, so we had a friend take a look at it. He said the pipe was clogged, showed us where the clog likely was, and said we would need a plumber to snake it. Sounded simple enough to me. We live in a condo complex, and the HOA president referred us to Newton Plumbing, saying they were close by and very experienced. I called to make an appointment, and in an effort to protect myself, asked for a quote. They said it was $59 for your basic drain-snaking operation, but it might be more depending on the set-up. So I'm thinking, can't be more than $100, even with potential add-ons, right?

Near the end of the arrival window, John the plumber arrived. We explain to him what happened and where our (experienced) friend said the clog probably was. He takes a look and says it'll be $259. ?!!??!?! "Erm, I was quoted $59 over the phone, what exactly is the extra $200 for?" Bla bla, something about being on the second story and having no outside access, so he would need to take apart all the pipes under the sink. Erm, our friend already did that and it only took him 15 minutes, how hard can it be?

So while John went downstairs to get his tools, I quickly called the company just to double check the price. Yes, $59 is the base rate, but complications (such as no outside access) raises the rate. That doesn't sound right, and no one has bothered explaining what the heck they're talking about, so I quickly call another place our friend mentioned. They quoted $99 for pipe-snaking, with potential additional fees depending on the situation. I explained that we're on the second floor and the current plumber is saying the lack of an outside access raises the rate, but this second company still gave me the runaround.

At this point I figured any company is going to quote low, have a guy come in, and quote a lot higher, so I just told John to go ahead. After describing a job that sounded like it would take hours, it took him 15 minutes to take a few pipes out and snake out the clog. I gritted my teeth, knowing I'd been robbed, and showed him the door.

I'll give him this--he arrived on time and fixed the problem. But next time I'm going to be patient and give myself plenty of time to get other quotes, even if it means scheduling a week's worth of plumbing appointments. I can't speak for the rest of the plumbers on the payroll, but I find it disgusting that Newton Plumbing, or any company, would allow these kinds of business practices.

One of the oldest and most respected plumbing companies in Culver City. Don't know if it is still owned by the Newtons, but they have always been reliable with us.
