I have been going to this place since I was 7 years old and it was an old hamburger joint. When the current owner bought it back in the 70's I tried my first nut burger and fell in love. This place is clean, pleasant and just a wonderful place to sit and dine. The roosters walking around are a beautiful addition. I was born and raised in Fair Oaks and go back at least once a month and eat here. It is amazing!

for lunch at about 2 pm 1/21/10 My girlfriend ordered a Falafel, and I ordered a Nut burger and a banana milk shake... (by the way, the banana milk shake was fantastic... as usual).
we didn't even make it to dinner... something felt wrong.
we were both poisoned. Food poisoning! I don't know what it was exactly, but I know for sure that it WAS the food from the sunflower. nothing else we did that day could have brought on what happened next...
every last bit of everything came flying out my ass at the speed of light! I spent the next 5 hrs on the toilet. my body ached, it was the most horrible feeling in the world! My girlfriend... was throwing up for 4 hrs straight, her Dad took her to the E.R. and they filled her with fluids... today is the 23rd, almost 48 hrs later. I feel better... she is resting peacefully, and it's sad, but true.
I can never go back to the SunFlower again. EVER!
and I love those banana milk shakes.
but if a natural foods restaurant can not serve "CLEAN" vegetables, "CLEAN" sprouts...."CLEAN" onions... (which is probably what did it) then I don't want to eat it.
there's no "and's if's or but's" about it. obviously what goes on behind the counter is NOT CLEAN ENOUGH!!!!
Because last night I could have sworn that my girl was going to DIE!!!!! She though she was going to die...
and what now...
well... I write this story that's what... and it's true....
and I'm wondering if anybody else got sick that day.
Thursday... 1/21/10... anyone else?
Screw the Sun Flower! and those jerks who work there!
I bet none of them got ill from eating that day...
because they probably eat what is fresh and serve the old stuff as fast as possible...
vegetables need to be kept COLD!!!! they rot fast!!!!
and I just don't think they realize that.

Cons: I simply can never go back.

My husband is a carnivore. But, I choose veggie whenever possible. I have been eating at the Sunflower for over 20 years. Their nutburger is the BEST. And, the shakes are amazing. My husband likes the falafel and tacos (I have tried them, and they are good), but again, the Nutburger is the BEST! Actually, the millet burger is pretty good too. If you have room (after the main course and a shake) try their chips and salsa. Also very good. This place is a walk-up stand. It is surrounded by picnic tables and chickens (live chickens which roam all over the Village)...so know that you might want to pick up and take home, or go around the corner for a picnic in the park.

I started going to sunflower drive inn when my son was 2 he is now 35. wow. I have since moved to far away to go there every chance I could. but when I go to calif. on trips sunflower drive inn is one the first places I go to.
I miss their food especially the nutty tacos are to die for. Just thinking about them makes me drool. I have tried to make them myself but have never been close. I have introduced everyone I have known when I lived there and still hear reports of their visits. When my dad would visit me sunflower drive inn was one of his request. He is an avid meat and potatoes kinda guy but those nutty tacos got him every time. If you go, eat a nutty taco for me. charlene

I have been comming to the Sunflower Drive- In for 20yrs now, I love the food. Favorite is the Nutty Taco with extra cheese and a #5 smoothie. Yes, you do wait a long time for the food, but well worth the wait. Thanks Sunflower employees, keep up the good work. God bless

This is my favorite place to go on a nice afternoon for a delicious bite to eat with a friend or two. I have been going here for more than ten years and have tried just about everything on the menu. Everything is delicious, but I always go back to the nutburger. It's not just a burger.... it's really special. I have never had any complaints about the service, if I happen to every get the wrong item, I think I'd eat it anyway because I know it would be great. Service is slow, but its expected. We call if we are in a hurry, otherwise plan ahead. We usually walk over to the park or even a little further to the red bridge by the river. LOVE THIS PLACE. It's better than any other vegetarian restaurant I've been to. AND everyone I introduce to it gets hooked. If you haven't tried it, please do. Just make sure you have a little extra time. :)

Healthy food, lots on the menu and a great place to relax and enjoy your food. Wild chickens and roosters add to the experience and entertainment. The nut burgers are the best with chips and salsa and fruit smoothie. Highly recommend this place, but give yourself an extra 10 - 15 minutes if you are on your lunch break, food is prepared for you so it takes a little extra time and it can get crowded but so well worth it.

I eat here a lot because of the delicious food . I love the nutburger w/cheese , & the patty melt . The peanut butter shake is amazing . My wife is a fan of their falafel , & the nutty tacos . She also likes the raspberry yogurt shake . The staff is always kool to me , so I think that the few reviewers who complained about the service were probably putting off the bad vibe . If you want fake nicey nicey help , go to TGI Fridays . You'll definitely get LOTS of it there .

The food is really great. It is fresh and while the prices sometimes reflect it, you usually will get a large portion of anything you order. The service however can be fairly pathetic. Several times I have not gotten the right item. Once, I asked for it to go, and they gave it to me "for here" When i politely said, "oh, can i get this to go?" They VERY RUDELY said "Well, you got it for here", they even went and checked my ticket then handed it to me to prove that they had written down "for here". But, I have had very friendly experiences as well. And the food is worth the rude servers.

I REALLY love eating at the Sunflower in the off seasons (anytime but in the summer months). The service and the food seem to better, perhaps because they are not as busy then. In the summertime, they are ALWAYS slammed and it's hard to get in and out in under 45 minutes, even with to go orders. The atmosphere is great, and the chickens are fun to eat with. It's my favorite place to eat in Sacramento, but I avoid going there when it's crowded. I highly recommend checking it out though, as it is an experience to remember.

I think the two negative posters just don't get out much. They're very nice there and, if you had to crouch down and speak through a little window, it might be kind of difficult for you to be Mary Poppins pleasurable, too. The food is fantastic, even the chips and chunky salsa (tomato water, my eye). On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the place is packed. Take a walk over to the park and enjoy your food with the chickens!

While living in San Francisco for the past five years my husband and myself would often say to each other " I wish there was a Sunflower here", even though the restaraunts in the city are amazing we always had a craving for a nutburger from Sunflower. Now that we are back in Sacto. we eat there quite frequently and are always completely satisfied. I highly recommend Sunflower for that beautiful afternoon when you can sit outside, or anytime really.

I thought I loved Sunflower food because I grew up on it...the deliciousness of the nutty burger is something else, but do go for the ambiance and the chickens! But despite the vegan focus I think it is actually just yummy stuff for everyone. I took my husband who is a total foodie from NYC to Sunflower a couple times and now he always wants to go back every time we are near Fair Oaks.

I have been going to the Sunflower for over 20 years and continue to enjoy the food. I have recently started going back to get a good health quick meal. I highly recommed the Sunflower, and for those of you who might have heard the service is poor and slow, I very much disagree, the staff is always friendly and the food is a bit slow because it is cooked to order.

I'm sorry to read that a couple of posters experienced rude service at this restaurant. I've never found them rude, but they are notoriously slow and the lines do back up because the food is cooked as you order - not precooked and sitting under heatlamps. The food is worth the wait, though. They do take phone-in orders and so if you are in a hurry, it might pay to phone ahead. I always order the nutty taco or the falafel - both of which are unique and delicious. Once you get your order, you can take it to the nearby park and make a picnic of it. A nice way to spend a leisurely lunch. One of my favorite places.

Customer Service- almost the worst I have ever had. Unfriendly staff- just plain rude. Wrong order- would not correct the type of bun I had specificcaly asked for. Would not refund the $5.95 I paid for a sandwich. Was told to stand at window next time and check the order. Won't be back and neither will any of my co-workers that work within 20 yards of the Drive-In.

We did go there a few times before....nothing too special....today our order was incorrect and they would NOT even correct the one item that was wrong. We can see this place from where we work which is a nice little community. We will NEVER Ever go there again!!! I could not believe the manner in which the employees treated their customers. I would not reccomend this place if you like your food right and the salsa is like tomato water!

This place is where I go when I am craving a milk shake. Believe me, they have the best milk shakes around & it is just milk & ice cream. None of that junk stuff. Oh! Their food is good too, especially the salsa.
