My family and I were visiting the San Francisco bay area last week and stumbled upon Alana's Cafe. The service was outstanding ant the food was great (thank you Sara). My son, who is 9 years old and a very picky eater, also enjoyed the food.

This is definitely a better option than your typical chain restaurants or fast food restaurants.

Had the unfortunate opportunity to dine at Alan's Cafe in Burlingame this morning. My dining companion and I arrived and were greeted by an unfriendly woman wearing old jeans and a tee shirt and told to seat ourselves in the back. At the table we waited a long time to be asked if we wanted coffee or juice. Then we waited an even longer time to have our brunch order taken. Then it took almost 20 minutes longer to get a simple scramble and a bowl of oatmeal brought to our table. The place was full, but there seems to be an abundance of workers giving very little service to patrons. The whole time we waited for service, food and finally a long wait for the bill- the same woman who 'seated' us was sitting at a table in the middle of the room chatting with another diner. Maybe they both worked there? One of the other waitresses also spent a long time standing at the same table talking to the diner while the patrons sat all around them waiting for basic service and food. What a joke that place is! The food is mediocre at best and the portions are not generous for the price. We should have walked out of this insulting place after the half hour wait before our food arrived.
We have been there before and it was just okay. But today was blatant rotten service and a lack of care.
We left no tip.

Forget Stacks and all the other highly trafficked places. Alana's is on the main drag (Burlingame Ave) and has breakfast, lunch and dinner. They are known for their breakfasts.

For breakfast - try the Oatmeal Pancakes, the Mediterranean scramble or the quiche.

For lunch - the Chinese Chicken Salad is a winner (and huge!)

You can't have breakfast there without asking for a scone. They make them fresh each day and have different specials each day.

I almost hate to review this place for fear others will find out how great it is! This is the BEST breakfast in B-game (better than Stacks in my opinion). The oatmeal pancakes and scones are to die for. I take all out of town guests to this place for oatmeal pancakes and every person has left raving about them! The egg dishes (scrambles, omlets, etc) are good too but not outstanding. The wait can be long on the weekends so try to get there early. FYI, they also started serving dinner.

Pros: brunch food, service

Cons: wait on weekends

Tiny, cute cafe that's only open for breakfast and lunch. Great waffles and sandwiches on focaccia, plus a special sandwich, omelette, and quiche daily. Salads are good too. Fantastic spicy iced tea. Parking on Burlingame Ave. can be a challenge, but it's a nice stroll down the block if you're parked a bit further away.
