Surfing is a huge part of our identity here on the west coast and we??re proud to have some of the best beaches for it right here in San Diego. Since the 1960??s people have been learning that surfing really is one of the best ways to get out there and enjoy the water. If your kids always wanted to learn how to surf or maybe you yourself have always wanted to give it a try, there are plenty of ways to get into the water; but by far the best way is to learn from someone who really knows what they??re doing. That??s why there is Surfari in Mission Beach, family-owned and operated, there is no better surf school in the area.
All ages are welcome at Surfari and most clients are up and riding by their third wave. Put best by owner Rick Gehris, ??The only requirement is the desire to learn. If you can walk you can surf.? Maybe you??re just visiting and you want to go back home knowing you gave our lifestyle the full go. Surfari has everything available to rent that you need to get in the water like boards, wetsuits and rash guards. If you??re a little hesitant at being out in the waves, Rick has 10 years of experience as a life guard so you know it??s safe out there. Surfari offers lessons year round, 7 days a week at multiple times throughout the day. All lessons are 2.5 hours and consist of a land instruction, water instruction and independent practice. Surfari also offers surf camps during the summer. Camps are 5 days of 4-hour instructions. Camps are offered for ages 8 ?? 13 as well as 13 and up. Some of the differences you??ll find at Surfari besides the cost is a customer satisfaction initiative as well as lockers, in-house showers and a shop location just a block from the beach.
So if your kids are begging you to learn or you??ve always wanted to give it a try, come to Mission Beach and talk to Surfari about receiving expert instructions. You??ll be set for life on getting out and enjoying the waves all over the west coast.

My friends talked me into taking a surf lesson and I had an amazing time. I am from Atlanta and I have never been in the ocean before. I can't believe that I actually stood up and rode a wave in the Pacific Ocean. I am so happy with this

My friend and I took surf lessons at Surfari for spring break and had lots of fun. We caught lots of waves and I got up many times. This was a wonderful experience for me and I want to let the staff at Surfari know that they did a world class job! =)

I see these great reviews about this place, so I have to put my 2 cents in. I had a very poor experience with this company recently. This leads to me to believe that there's been a change of management, or they just don't give a crap about their customers anymore. From the first interaction on the phone, to the entire lesson was a total wash. The guys I talked to, both on the phone and in person, were rude and a bit condescending. Sorry, I'm not a seasoned surfer- that's why I'm here!!! Giving you money!!! The lesson was quick and dirty, and the instructor, Dave or Dan or something, was totally disinterested. I still haven't mentioned the dirty wet suit, disgusting "changing room" (more like janitor's closet), and their accusations of another lesson participant of shop lifting. But, you get the idea. There are a bunch of other schools in this area, I wish I had gone to instead, but hopefully I save someone else time and money.??

Cons: rude, don't care about customers

I wanted to take a group lesson here, and talked to someone on the phone beforehand. When I got there, they said that there was only one other person wanting a lesson, so they charged me the more expensive "semi-private" fee.
Our instructor's name was Dave. If you go here, make sure you do NOT get him. He kept leaving us to go talk to other people. He was supposed to do 30 minutes of on land instruction, then one hour in the water, with the last hour being free time with the equipment. His instruction was quick and confusing. He did not explain anything, and used terms that a beginner would not be familiar with. He may be a good surfer, but he's definatley not a good teacher. He spent maybe 10 minutes with us on land, and about 30 minutes with us in the water.
Hopefully their other instructors are better teachers, and more attentive to their students, giving them what they pay for. I could have learned the same thing renting my own equipment and talking to a random surfer on the beach. I would not recommend this place, and I will be checking out one of the other schools next time.?? There are quite a few in the area with the same pricing.

I attended surf camp at Surfari, and brought two friends. I've rented surfboards from them at least 17 times and even owned Surfari t-shirts. I've brought them over $1500 in business and I used to be a fan...

Recently, I was in the shop while my friend rented a board, looking at t-shirts right in front of the register and the owner. A bracket broke and 2 kayaks fell off the ceiling and HIT ME, but luckily it wasn't a direct hit. The owner yelled at me, blamed it on me, swore at my friends and kicked us out of the store. Mind you, the kayaks were ON THE CEILING and there was no way I could have done anything without a ladder and a good deal of initiative.

It ruined our morning, and we had to spend quite a while looking for somewhere else to rent boards and suits. If I had been even a foot shorter I likely would have also had to go to the hospital. Would it have been difficult to apologize for almost injuring me, or at least asking if I was OK? A store owner nearby said this sort of behavior was not atypical of the owner.

I just wanted to say thank you for the great surf experience my son Travis had with you. As parents, our only goal was to get him more comfortable with the water. Before last week, Travis was real intimidated being in the water. Now he is diving under waves and wants to be at the beach everyday. The fact that he now wants to surf is even more priceless. The extra steps taken are very much appreciated. The biggest thing we want to thank you for is the care and instruction that was provided. Dave was great with Travis and incredibly patient. Could you please pass the enclosed pictures to Dave?

Sincerely,?

Dave is an excellent instructor and I would highly recommend him to anyone who is wanting to learn. He pushed me into the best waves and help me stay on track with my technique. The girl at the shop was very helpful after the lesson and I appreciate the free Surfshot magazine!

I had some much fun at my surf lesson the other day. At first I thought it was going to be difficult to learn, but Zack was very patient with me. He was teaching me in a way that was easy to understand, and I got up on my first wave. I will be back to rent a board next time I am in town. Thanks again!!
