I often have to remind my child to wait until the car stops before she hops out in the morning - she loves going to school that much.
Saint James is a special place. The faculty and staff are caring professionals. The school's state of the art science lab and newly renovated art room make learning even more exciting!
We have a new head of school, an educator has worked in every facet of education and brings her vast experience and loving spirit to our jewel in the city! I highly recommend Saint James Episcopal School.

This is school is an absolute gem. The academic education is excellent. The school also focuses on strong character development. The administration, faculty and staff are wonderful, nurturing and kind. The cost is reasonable compared to similar private schools. We've put two children through the school, and they both loved it.

For a long time St James was a secret treasure. Fees were reasonable and the teachers and school leaders were good, caring and very responsive to parents The school is now having a very major identity crisis since the new school head Steven Bowers joined. Bluntly put, Mr. Bowers is quite elderly and seems overwhelmed by his position. The excellent veteran teachers are the true superstars of the school. Tuition has doubled and there is no real progressive changes for all that money. (And we still get constant fundraising calls at both home and work.) The biggest problem now is lack of strong leadership and communication. Hopefully the school board will help find a more dynamic leader soon to help return St. James to it's previous high levels.

Pros: What remains of teaching staff is good

Cons: The administration is borderline incompetent

St. James Episcopal School is located on St. Andrews Place between Wilshire Boulevard and Sixth Street. It is next door to St. James Church which is a favorite of mine at Easter. The two-story building, which once housed the entire school, has been expanded into a new structure. The church purchased a large corner, commercial plot of land next door several years back. The new building, designed by Brenda Levin, (who recently completed the restoration of City Hall) is a wonderful addition to the campus. It rises majestically next door to the old building and stands like an actor in a leading role behind which are the supporting actors (in this case the line of modern apartment buildings that sit behind the school). The old library is now a huge classroom, and every existing classroom and the art studio has doubled in size. This new building has provided space for a multi-purpose room, a science lab, which had previously been run out of the basement of the church, and much larger classroom facilities.
