If I could give ZERO stars, I would. I've had two bad experiences in El Torito. Once, three years ago, I was in the El Torito in Oakland, at Jack London Square. We were seated and waiting for 45 minutes, before finding out from employees that one of the chefs had stabbed the other and was in jail, while the other was in the hospital. They were looking for another chef to cover the shift.

The more recent experience was at the Long Beach location on Father's Day. The service was horrible. The waitress took our beverage order, at which time we ordered for our toddler, asking that the meal be brought out as soon as ready (parents of toddlers understand. So should restaurant staff). We waited 20 mins for our food order to be taken. At that time, the waitress said that our child's meal (pizza) should be ready soon. Twice (once for the pizza, then once for our meals), we had to actively seek assistance from other employees to check on our orders. Our meal was brought by an unsympathetic manager who proceeded to tell us that the order had been in the kitchen for 25 minutes (didn't take our wait time before the order into account) and proceeded to lecture us about "acceptable wait time for the meal preparation. He said that 25 minutes was acceptable. Of course, the meal brought to us was incorrect. The waitress, who had warned us about the hot serving plates, shakily passed a hot plate over the heads of my wife and toddler. I had to cover his head with my arms to guard him. The waitress and I then made eye contact. No apology. Not for the shabby service. Not for the incorrect meals. Not for her carelessness. By this point, we were all very upset, so we got up and left. Our complaints at the front desk fell on the manager's deaf ears. My wife told him about the plate. His reply was a monotone and indifferent "wow". As I expressed my displeasure, he accused me of threatening him. When I incredulously replied that I had not threatened him, he said that "my posture suggested threatening". We left, never to return.
