The food is tasty, and the ambiance is pleasing but the buck should stop there. Unfortunately, you will spend several bucks just to tease your appetite. Go if your into paying a lot to 'fit in and be coool'.

Our service was great and the waiter was adorable. Ambiance was romantic and definitely recommended. For the music,,,I would recommend jazz or house and the people were cool. Portions were good.

Food is amazing. Every time I come here, I feel like I never want to leave. Very chic atmosphere with a relaxing mood.
The service is great and the staff really does a terrific job at taking care of you.
The appetizers are delicious.
Theres plenty of places to park: theres a parking lot across the street and a parkin garage up the street within walking distance.
Most of the time I find myself looking at my watch waiting for the food to come, but here I was so entertained with the fun atmosphere that I was pleasantly surprised when my food arrived

After having a good meal, we told the cashier that we needed our check in a hurry, because we had an appointment to rush off to, but the cashier kept ignoring us, and after asking him for the check 4 times, he finally brought the check 30 minutes later, which made us miss our appointment.

This poor service, and disrespect from the cashier was enough to make us decide never to return to this restaurant again.

This was really good sushi from a lover of CA rolls, Unagi and Miso Soup. I am not the most adventurous, but I know what I like ... and that is, clean - affordable - quality sushi. This place fits the bill. In fact, I found it through citysearch and saw all of the fantastic reviews and thought, why not? So, I did and here I am adding to them. There are a couple of bad reviews, ignore them. This place is solid! There is also some REALLY cool shopping in the mall, so plan some extra time and have a look around.

Wow! Better than I've had in Japan and that's where the fish is coming from. How's that possible?

Started with the King Crab Sunomono appetizer is fantastic it had the sea salt flavor from the sea.

Their uni is so sweet and fresh. Love their live sweet shrimp. Most times I get the heads fried like popcorn shrimp. Their spanish mackerel is soooooo good with grated ginger and ponzu sauce.

It's on par if not better with the best sushi bars on westside which I normally pay $100+ pp at 70-80% of the price.

The owner, Tomoko dressed in blue is super friendly and is knowledgeable about food.

Sushi Go 55 consistently has the freshest and best-tasting fish I've had in LA. This is a traditionalist's sushi place - if you're looking for out-of-the-box bizarro rolls, go somewhere else. But for straightforward, high-quality sushi and sashimi, you can't go wrong here. I'm shocked to read stories about sub-par service - my experience is that the service is attentive without being oppressive. But it all comes down to the fish, which is where Sushi Go 55 really shines.

This place has some really nice fresh sushi that's pretty affordable. The miso is so good that it's worth coming here for the soup alone. Lunch is pretty busy so go early.

I went to Sushi Go 55 after hearing about it on NPR's Off Ramp.

I recommend sitting at the bar and letting the sushi chef prepare what he wants for you, omakase style. The fish was fresh, the sushi very flavorful, but definitely not for the faint of heart!

If you're bold, try the live sweet shrimp sushi. As its name implies, the shrimp are killed right in front of you and go from aquarium to your plate in less than 30 seconds. It's meant to be eaten raw, still squirming!

Enjoy!

I really don't know if I would come here again. The food was excellent (I was surprised by how good it was actually) but the service was very below average. The servers took a long time to let me order even when I waved them over. The location is annoying to get to but wouldn't hurt this place if their service was any better. The food would be the only reason for me to come here again. Go if you want good food and dont mind bad service.

I say that because I been going to Little Tokyo snice 1976 when its was all Japanese.. Not to many americans.. Sushi Go Go has fresh fish but most american don't know about fish being in season, so sometime your not going to get something your looking to eat, which is good because any other Sushi bar will give it to you. As being a customer your, Sushi Chef will always remember what you like to eat so he will tell you if its to your taste or will not serve it to you. .. To all of you who eat Sushi try everything this way you can enjoy the drifferent taste of fish and don't be be afraid to ask your Chef what the taste is. To the guy who order lunch to go just remember that Tempera when its put in a to go box its going to get soft because of heat that is trapped inside. Sushi Go Go is one place that I like to go to and yes Hamakawa is sorely missed, and Sushi Gen is great but small cuts if its your first time. So the next time you come to Sushi Go Go say to Tomoko she is the owner who is a good friend.

Well.. I have been to my fair share of japense/seafood/sushi places from coast to coast (La, Denver, Green Bay) So let me sum this up, best as I can. The location....not bad actually, It was my first time going there so I was a little nervous since its downtown but there is a parking garage that has the 1st hour free!! and hey, in LA who passes up free parking??.. Which was great because I was on lunch, and another perk is that they let you order ahead... Makes it easy for an in and out transaction.

The actualy restaurant itself. Well, its small, Unique in its own way. First thing I noticed was the smell. Well, maybe "smell" isn't the correct word. It was more of a scent. Each sushi restaurant has its own scent, but this one was a little strong. Felt rather humid in the restaurant which was odd. Nevertheless it didn't bother me that much.

My take out sushi was ready to go when I got there waiting at the front desk, easy transaction. In and out i probably spent less than a minute in the restaurant.

The food.. Was.. Well.. for the price I paid.. pretty much average.. But overall very tasty. I think the tempura could have fried a little longer, it was more limp than crispy and they only offer a few different rolls with the lunch special. I'm personally not a HUGE fan of california rolls, their a little bland to me.

Overall.. how do I feel after eating the food?.. well I'm out $12.50 - but I can honestly say, a meal well spent. Would I go back to sushi go 55. Most def. Hopefully the tempura will be better next time. I say this restaurant is perfect for those on the go or wanting quick sushi take out.

Cons: small menus, not a big variety on lunch specials, undercooked tempura.

When I saw that this restaurant had five stars and such low prices, I thought "Wow, this must be one of those super cool holes in the wall that you only stumble upon by accident or have to hear about through your friends," but I was wrong. The sushi was sub average at best (I could get the same quality at any higher end supermarket for much less money) and the service was absolutely abysmal. It was extremely frustrating gaining the attention of the servers, though I frequently called for them making pleading eye gestures, waving, even calling out to them directly, all to no avail. Even as the servers passed by me and made eye contact, they kept moving on. We had to ask for our bill three times and only got it after complaining that we had asked so many times and had been waiting up to half an hour. I will definitely never come here again.

Pros: None, really

Cons: absolutely horrible service, sub par susi, fish smell. Other things were less than thrilling, such as the lighting, but they pale in comparison to the bad service.

Been to this place a couple of times now and each time has been a good experience. The sushi/sashimi always seems fresh, the service is good and you get good value for your money. There are some really tasty dishes on the appetizer/specials menu in addition to good sushi. This is one of the better places in the Little Tokyo area. I can't say it's the best because I haven't been to every one of them yet. I will definitely be back again.

Just went to Sushi Go 55 again for the thousandth time. Alway a favorite. Everytime I have a craving for sushi, I always end up here. We've tried other sushi places, but this one remains on top of the list. Their fishes are fresh, the staff is polite and very knowledgeable. Don't know what to order? Ask the sushi chefs and they'll lead you in the right direction. I highly recommend the anago (grilled freshwater eel sushi. Sounds strange, but tastes grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!) I love this place and would recommend it to everyone.

Sushi Go-55 is a low key sushi joint located in the little Toyko district of Downtown. Fish here as been good quality, although last time the toro didn't seem too fresh (was way too cold and hard). They offer freshly grated wasabi, though at $6. The red snapper is excellent, and most of the other rolls and sushi are as well. The prices are moderately higher than other places, and expect to spend about $60 a person not including drinks. Parking is easy, reservations would be recommended

If this is the best Sushi place downtown L.A., then I'm SCARED! The seaweed salad was nothing I've ever had before...it wasn't bad, but definitely not good. The rolls we had were on the same level as the refridgerated rolls you buy at the grocery store. I should have figured the place wasn't as good as people have reviewed, since the place was dead. Even though service was pretty good and the people were nice, I will never go back.

Considering how many people say that they like sushi, it's interesting how many don't really like fish. The important thing is the flavor of the fish, and some of the oilier types smell "fishy" even when they are fresh because that's how they taste and smell. Maybe there was something wrong with the ventilation for the earlier reviews, but I didn't notice the smell. I was also glad to see a board with daily specials based on the best FISH available for the day. Some places can make any wasabi-loaded, chili-sauce sprayed concoction your heart desires; I'm just glad that if you actually order American sushi like a California roll, you get crab instead of Krab in it. It was nice to have amaebi so fresh the tail twitched when I picked it up with my chopsticks. (I also got the shrimp heads returned to me in a fresh bowl of miso soup.) It was nice to have otorou that was perfectly marbled with fat instead of striped with gristle. I liked being able to go with the chef's judgement on the daily catch for my sushi- half the battle is picking the best fresh fish. (Unless it's flown in from Tokyo or frozen, all sushi places from the westside to San Diego get their fish from the fish market downtown- or so I heard from the owner of a great sushi place down in Solana Beach.) II agree with the other reviewer that Hamakawa is sorely missed, and Sushi Gen is great. But for a omakase of real nigiri sushi and sashimi washed down with some sake and beer under $120 for two people, this is my new neighborhood place.

Head and shoulders above most all sushi bars having unique fresh selections. You don't come here to order California rolls, catepillars, krunch, or salmon skin handrolls (Chevrolet stuff). Try the flying fish, Kumamoto oysters, tai, mirugai, or saba with shiso leaf or kazunoko as otsumami (appetizers) or as sushi. Drink with Otokoyama sake (this is where the good stuff begins, never order house sake, headache stuff). Tomo-chan, owner and mgr, is most congenial and sushi masters are very skilled in their craft

I've read all the rave review regarding Sushi Go 55, and finally decided to try it. I did notice the small fishy smell in the restaurant, but it could be due to poor air circulation. The wait staff was nice and attentive, but when it gets busy it could be hard to get their attention. I ordered variety of dishes to get a broad perspective on the restaurant. The tempura was excellent, grilled eggplant was average, and pickled cold dish was average. Now down to the heart of the meal. The variety of fish is excellent, freshness is good, price is reasonable. I ordered a Toro sashimi, and assorted sushi. The sashimi was good, but the sushi was average. What I felt was missing was the skill level in making the sushi. I felt like I was eating sushi from floating boats or trains. Ingredients to sushi are not very complex, but the art is the skill level and technique of the sushi chef, and how a sushi is constructed. I had better sushi at Sushi Gen and Hamakawa (Now Closed). Therefore Sushi Go 55 did not impress me to return soon, and I rated ?Average?.

I will start by saying that I have eaten in over 100 sushi places all over the world in the last 30 years. I consider my self a sushi expert. And for that matter a very picky eater. I am also very health conscious. I have a rule, never eat in a place that smells fishy. When my wife and I walked in we smelt fish, but since she is Asian, it didn't bother her. So she convinced me that since it was so highly rated in citysearch, we should give it a try. So, we sat down and ordered a California roll, yellowtail sashimi, 1 small beer and 1 7up. I had one piece of California roll and realized where the fish smell was coming from. I spat it into a napkin and tried one of the 4 tiny pieces of yellow tail. It was ok, but not as good as everyone seems to say. I asked for the check and it was $28.36!!! Holy 100-dollar bills batman, what if I would have eaten the normal amount of sushi? I would have had to have my visa titanium!!!! The place is a rip off. I would not recommend it to my cat, much less any human being. We headed back to Tokyo town and ate at Komasa. Had to wait but it sure was good. And by the way we had at a Teriyaki Salmon dinner, 2 8 Piece Yellow tail sashimi, 2 yellowtail sushi, spicy tuna roll, regular tuna roll, those Japanese soybeans, California roll, 2 miso soups, 1 large beer and 1 7up and a couple of other orders of sushi I can?t remember right now. Anyway, the total bill was 68 bucks (I could actually afford to pay cash!!), and I left an 11 dollar and change tip! I tried to get them entered into city search but it never happened. Don't know why. In conclusion, I have to say that I have depended on city search to show me the best places in the LA area. This is the first time the site failed. I really hope it doesn't happen again.

Pros: The place looked good. Very few customers so was seated fast. Maybe that was a warning.

Cons: Smelled fishy and the california roll was the worst I have ever eaten. Too expensive and had to climb 3 stories just to get ripped off.

i took my boyfriend to sushigo55 for his birthday. the sushi bar was full but we had a table reservation. the lighting was a little too bright, there is no romantic ambiance in the place, but the food was excellent. we had the stuffed eggplant appetizer, edamame and miso, plus the blue crab roll, the spicy scallop roll, and a few other sushi and rolls. the waitress was very helpfull in recommending the specials. since it was a birthday, they brought out a plate of tempura ice cream with fresh strawberries and a candle. the waitresses came over to sing Happy Birthday to him. i was surprised, since i had only mentioned it was his birthday the day before when i made the reservation. very nice touch. there was a large party (also a birthday) next to us that sang along too. we will definietely go there again. the parking was easy, they validated our ticket, so it was free, and getting there was a snap. park on the 4th level of the parking garage, then go into the mall, where you will then be on the 3rd level of the mall.

I've been going here for a few years now, and this is my favorite sushi place in LA by far. The servers are really nice and sweet, and the fish is always fresh. The portion-sizes are great, and you definitely get your money's worth. I highly recommend the blue crab hand rolls! The chef also makes a spicy scallop roll which is very yummy.

Fresh sushi, free parking, great service, great prices...I love this place! I'm very picky about my sushi and this place has not yet failed me. The waitresses are very sweet and the service is wonderful. I work downtown L.A. and am able to drive to the restaurant (where parking is easy, plentiful and free--a boon on the weekends!) and eat in just over an hour. The prices are reasonable, and so my lunch pal and I can always plan on a delicious weekly sushi lunch.

Fresh Fresh Fresh!!! Excellent service. I tend to always sit at the bar. The chef gives helpful reccomendations there and with a smile. My friends and I choose this restaurant for special occasions and savour each and every moment of it. I reccomend the Spanish Mackeral as well as the Red Snapper. Mmmm, so delicious!!

First time I ate at Sushi Go 55, I went nuts over the amazing food that I went looking for an apartment nearby so that I can eat there everyday. The sushi is solid. The fish is so fresh that it melts in your mouth like butter. I highly recommend the Spanish mackerel, salmon, red snapper, tuna, amberjack, and hama hama oysters. The regulars go here because it's all about the sushi. No people watching, no drama, no gimmicks, and no fluff. If you appreciate good sushi, Sushi Go 55 is the place for you. Sitting at the bar is also recommended. One has to appreciate the skills that their chefs have day in and day out.

So it was Thursday night around 7:30pm, expected the restaurant to be some what crowded since it's dinner time after work and it was. restaurant was clean and majority of the tables were for 2 or 4 people. i must say the presentation of sushi was great and the portions were generous, no doubt that chef is good, but the eel bento box wasn't so great, i had such a hard time trying to break eel into smaller pieces, i think it was one of those frozen eel that was reheated... usually eel is very soft and it melts in your mouth. anyway, one of the older waitress who should have years of experience serving didn't have much common sense and service was awful. would i go again? maybe... someday...

I went to Sushi Go 55 off of the rave reviews from Citysearch. After a great night with my girlfriend at the Getty, we decided to have some sushi. We made reservations for 8:30. We arrived promptly but waited 15 minutes after we arrived for a table. The waitress took our order shortly afterward. At 10 pm (around 70 minutes after the waitress took our order) the sushi chefs had still not started our order and were told that it might take a while longer. i was upset to say the least. One sushi chef looked our way and started snickering. I am Japanese, and I was appalled by what was being said (to me and behind our backs) and done, so we got up and left. The hostess said, "One sushi chef is sick. Please come back soon, we will try to serve you." Never will I go back. There was no monetary nor food compensation while we waited, and for a Japanese restaurant owned by Japanese people, I was disgusted by this lack of manners.

On 12/15/2007, we went back to Sushi Go 55. the son of the owners, who is the website manager, called us. On behalf of his parents, he apologized for the service and offered us 2 omokase as a peace offering. My fiance and I took advantage of this omokase tonight, and it was great!!! I understand now why many rave about this place because it was some of the best sushi that I have ever had in my life. Furthermore, I think that there was a change in staff in terms of sushi chefs. i will be going back to this establishment.

I've been going to this place for past 2 years, almost once every 2 weeks. In the beginning, fish was fresh with various live choices certain days. Now, quality and also service is really dropping. Sushi chefs seem to be changing every few months. What's going on? New chefs are so slow. Don't go here on weekends. You'll wait forever getting your food. Also, the daily specials, although same in most days, are getting shorter. Selection is going down. Hate to see this happening to my favorite sushi restaurant. But if this downfall continue, I must now move on to my other choices.

Valentine's Day '07, My beatiful wife and I check this place out and right away I see how authentic the layout is (My first duty station was Okinawa). From the first bite I was literally blown away by the Chef's choice. Sitting at the bar gave us the opprotunity to expand out pallate like never before and experience amazing flavors that in other places would have only been alien print to us. We've been to many a sushi place but it was uninanimous: by far the best we've ever had and the staff was cool.

Most of the places I go I order the Chirashi so I can get a sample of the sushi. So I got the Chirashi and two bento's came stacked on one another. One for the vegatable and one for the fish. Both extremely fresh. I also ordered the blue crab roll which was awesome. Needless to say with the Chirashi and the blue crab roll I was really stuffed. I've recommended the restuarant to a few friends as well and they all really like it. Very authetic and in the heart of little tokyo. I had lunch there and we were surround by japanese business men. It was alittle hard communicating with the waitress because the first one we had only spoke japanese so I would recommend this restuarant to people who know there sushi and novices.

Pros: Great Sushi, very authentic.

Cons: I would serve you well to know your sushi and know how to order in Japanese, not open sunday

The best time to come to this place is during lunch on the weekday. They have a lunch special for only $10!!! If I remember correctly there are about 8 pieces of sushi!. It also includes miso and some cold apetizer dishes. It is really more than enough for lunch. The quality of the sushi is actually very good for a price like that.

One of the best for traditional japanese sushi!!! no creamy rolls that you get at some places... this is the spot if you love the raw fish taste!

The uni, hamachi, sake were excellent!!! Nice, big slices of sushi on rice...
The albacore was a bit disappointing, but everything else was grealty superior to many other sushi restaurants.

We were there tonight for the first time and it's a fabulous restaurant. My girlfriend and I had the best sushi so far in LA. We're from San Francisco and SF has pretty high standard when it comes to sushi. Anyways, my girlfriend's favorite was the Japanese Aji sushi and mine was the spicy scallop sushi. Overall it's a great experience but a little pricey. But we'll return for sure.

I saw two negative reviews and just had to respond. I consider myself a sushi conossieur. I was introduced to sushi only 9 years ago but in that time I not only have dined in the finest sushi restaurants in the United States and continue to try it when traveling abroad; I worked in one of the finer (though more Americanized) sushi restaurants in Chicago for a year which is where I began my more technical sushi education. Unfortunately I have yet to travel to Japan but it is there and only there that I suspect I will dine at a restaurant that surpasses the quality, selection and service of Sushi Go 55. My suspicion with those that give a negative review is that they are perhaps put off by the handwritten sign above the door, or the handwritten pages they hand you as the menu. Or perhaps Sushi Go 55 isn't as trendy or as dimly lit as they would like. Have no doubt, Sushi Go 55 is AUTHENTIC. They're fish is the freshest, tastiest and they have the best selection around. Ever heard of Kohada (It's divine!!). I have dined both lunch and dinner by myself and with friends and clients many many times since first learning of Sushi Go 55 a year ago (to the day in fact). How many times is many times? Let's say somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 times. In one year. I have sat at the tables but really prefer to sit at the beautiful Hinoki sushi bar where all the action is. I have had sushi prepared by every sushi chef who has worked there in the last year. Never, not once, has the unbelievable freshness and tastiness of Sushi Go 55's fish failed to impress myself or my guests. For this, Sushi Go 55 is quickly becoming legend amongst the people in the know. But hey, why am I telling you? Don't go.......then there's more for me. ;-)

The best sushi I've ever had. PERIOD. The bar has been set. The chefs here are friendly and their artistry is amazing to watch. The staff is very warm and friendly. I felt as if I were in their home for a private dinner party. The Tai and Aji are AMAZING! I have no intention of going anywhere else....... I'd feel like I were cheating! I defy anyone to be less than completely satisfied! Wonderful, exotic flavors await!!!!

We went because of all the raving reviews, but I guess I expected too much. The sushi wasn't as fresh as I thought it would be. I was so disappointed with everything, especially the uni, my most favorite! You know how really fresh uni tastes like you've just had a taste of the sea? That fresh, clear, crisp, almost sweet taste... yeah, their uni didn't have that. It was so bland and tasteless. If you're a true sushi lover, I don't recommend this place at all.
