Uncle Vito's Pizza

by Adam B.

Vito's Pizza is the best pizza in the city. The staff is friendly, and the restaurant itself is clean. I don't know why it only has 3 stars from other reviewers, they must have been drunk while reviewing. Never drink and review kids.

Open late

by Fay W. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,957

While on vacation, we ate late at Uncle Vito's several nights because it was the only thing open past 10pm. The pizza was good. French fries were good too.

Worst excuse for "pizza" ever

by scott h.

While staying in union square unfortunatly we stumbled upon 'ol uncle vitos pizza.
The location couldn't be argued with. While close to the heart of the city, this pizza couldn't have possibly made its way to the city's stomach. Including the dry atmosphere, bland taste, service without human expression and lack of menu items associated with pizza, uncle vitos had every bad pizza joint base covered twice. The last thing i would like to know is, who serves salad in california without ranch dressing? go figure, go spend your money somewhere else if you enjoy taste or atmosphere

Big Plates, Good Pasta, Good Service

by Robert H.

This place sits on the corner of Bush and Powell Streets. It looks small from the outside, but opens up fast. The food is absolutely fantastic, and VERY large portions... You are guaranteed to bring home some leftovers. Service is good, and stays just as good when busy.

Great casual place!

by shawnamears

I love love love the pizza at this place. I used to love real close so it was super convenient, but I still go back from time to time for a beer and pizza. Everyone there is great and I've never been disappointed. Always fresh and hot!!

Pros: near union square

Late nite hungries and hot food...

by seattleduffer1

I found Uncle Vito's to be just what I expected, good hot food and lots of it. We ordered the specials which were a feta, spinach and sun dried tomato pizza and a chicken and cheese stuffed ravioli in garlic cream sauce with mushrooms...the ravioli was easily enough for 2 with a delicious rich creamy garlic suace and big tasty pieces of mushroom. The ravioli came with garlic bread that was hot and soft and buttery. The pasta covering the ravioli was a little thick but the sauce was very good. The pizza had a crispy crust and warm melty feta over the spinach and tomatoes...very tasty. There was quite a crowd and I waited prob 20-25 minutes for the food...not excellent but very good...worth the wait for a good late night snack.

Pros: large amountof food

Cons: parking

good affordable delivery

by barrer

Ordered delivery from Uncle Vitos during a recent visit to San Fran. Delivered promptly to my hotel, nice and warm. The cheesy garlic bread was delicious, and the two Alfredo meals we ordered were good, but pretty average, definitely a hefty portion. I would order from here again if I was looking for some affordable delivery food.

Loved the spagettini

by TomandNicole

San Francisco for Dummies recommended Uncle Vito's a good food at a reasonable price - and it really is! I loved their meatballs (my way of rating Italian restaurants), the house Chianti was good, and I recommend the Spagettini with brocolli and garlic. We went twice during our 6-day stay.

Pros: Great food, good price (about $10 per person before wine)

Cons: Didn't try the pizza, but had to put something in the circle...

great for take out!

by inkognitoinboulder

this place is excellent for take out! the restaurant itself is a dive and the wait staff is lacking, but the food is great... we walked over from our hotel, but should have just got the take out. the meatball sandwich is excellent and the chicken ceasar salad is pretty darn good too... and cheap! take out for sure though.

Pros: location, great take out food, price

Cons: the restaurant is "tired"

I'd rather eat frozen pizza than Uncle Vito's!!!

by get_the_honey_junior

Uncle Vito's does for pizza what the KKK does for race relations. A (former) friend recommended this place for a quick bite...hopefully no one will find his body where I dumped it...

If there ever was an "Uncle Vito", he's probably spinning in his grave. This pizza was no better than from your grocers freezer. The "garlic bread" we ordered consisted of a grocery aisle hoagie roll cut in half with a schmear of garlic spread stuck in the oven for a couple minutes...now THAT' S ITALIAN!!! I'm just surprised that I didn't find Spaghettios or Bologna Alfredo on the menu. If you even consider eating here....you deserve what you get!!!

As for the service...I'll let you guess...

Pros: The difficult parking in the area should prevent most from dining here

Cons: The CON job they put on every customer that thinks they might get edible pizza

Poor imitation of Italian food

by seattlesusan2

I'll be the first to tell the truth. I had to check out this restaurant after reading some rave reviews on the internet. What a hoax. It was not Italian food. The spaghetti was one big soggy mess with a tomato sauce that tasted like it came out of an old can. Vito's pizza was below average. DiGiorno's frozen pizza outranks this place anyday.

The place was crowded and noisy; reminiscent of a fast food joint. Service was poor; lunch took over two hours! Since the food wasn't edible, we left hungry. We immediately went to another restaurant in Union Square to have a real meal.

Don't let the friendly name fool you. If you value good food, then just pass this place and don't look back.

Pros: Somewhat convenient location

Cons: Food, service, atmosphere

I can't believe all the good reviews for this place!!!!

by jack_n_marin

I went with a friend after reading about it on citysearch. Started out with a salad that was good but the pizza was not very good at all. Mediocre at best. Go to Gaspar's on Geary and taste a delicious pizza. My friend had the meatball sandwich and like it but he did not care for the pizza either.

Pros: Good location

Cons: below average pizza

Great Pizza, don't believe the critics

by brettwerner

Recommended by the consierge, we were stoked. Ate and ate until we were blue, all three of us thought it was at least the top 3 of any pizza we'd ever had. Pepperoni alone is great.
The San Franciso twins eat there every Monday night.

Pros: Pizza, Pizza, Pizza

Simple but delicious!

by jlk1961

On a recent visit to San Francisco, my wife and I decided to give Uncle Vito's a shot for a quick evening meal. We were not disappointed! We both enjoyed their pasta. The fettucine with clams was delicious--filled with tender clams in a rich creamy white sauce. We enjoyed it so much we tried the pizza (a delivery to our hotel) a couple days later and were equally happy. The crust was thick and the toppings ample. The sauce was tasty but it seemed that a bit more sauce was needed as it was a bit dry. The beef topping was good. The service, both in the cafe and through delivery, was excellent! It is a bit noisy and busy but a fun place for an inexpensive and tasty meal and good overall dining experience.

Pros: value, variety, good delivery service

Cons: small "tight" space, noise

an oasis of great pizza

I love going here. It's the only good inexpensive spot in Union Square.
Pizzas are great and the salads are good.
We have them deliver to our work and they are pretty fast

Pros: friendly, good pizza, good salads

Cons: no parking

Great Food, Fun Place

by librarylara

Sometimes it's hard to choose at Uncle Vito's, all the food is sooo good. The toasted ravioli are a great place to start. After that the thin crust pizza is yummy, but the fettucine is to die for, and the meatball sandwich, mmmmmm.... Last time I went I picked the grilled chicken sandwich. I loved the grilled red peppers it came with, and the fries were perfect and crunchy, even after I took it to go. The Bush street location is an excellent place to go after a long day shopping at Union Square. Perfect for tourists since it's right on the Powell cable car line

Pros: Inexpensive, Great Food, Easy to Find

Disappointing...mediocre pizza at best!

by razy9

I read all these great recommendations so I was really looking forward to great pizza....what a disappointment! The pizza was not horrible but it was by no means great. There's got to be good pizza in San Francisco, I just can't find it. We had an appetizer of toasted ravioli that wasn't bad.

First place I go when in town

by jamie0426

Uncle Vito's is my #1 Italian restaurant in the area. It was where my boyfriend and I had our first date and where we plan to have our 3rd year anniversary dinner. It's not romantic, just casual and fun. The food is amazing, it's reasonably priced, and the wait staff is attentive but not intrusive. The pasta dishes are amazing and for lunch, the meatball sandwich is divine. I live in southern california now and I dream about being able to eat at Uncle Vito's! It's definitely the best little Italian restaurant in the city!!!!

Pros: Great food, reasonably priced, friendly wait staff

Cons: , no close parking

This is the best pizza I have ever eaten. I have had great pizza in New York, Chicago and St. Louis and nothing compares to Uncle Vito's. I was there for a weekend and ate there twice.

yum!

by pixiegrrle

This place is great for lunch and dinner. Try the famous mountain pizza if you're a meat-eater...or the superb greak salad if you're not! The turkey sandwhich is great if you aren't feeling the pizza vibe, and the french fries are said to have addictive qualities.

Pros: location, near public transit, good value

Cons: , small

Best Italian Ever

by blueshadow79

Uncle Vito's was a near miss while on the trolley. Luckily I got off at the wrong exit and saw the restaurant on the corner. I have never tried pizza with olive oil as a topping and it was delicious. Being from Southern California, I recommend this place to friends who take trips to SF and I always receive positive feedback.

Pros: great food, nice location

Cons: small, limited parking

I love Uncle Vito

by jene01

I went to Uncle Vito's for a "date" the other night and the spinach and feta cheese pizza saved the night. Not to mention the attentive and unintrusive service from Lucia (thank you). All I can say is, if the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie.... that's Uncle Vito's!

Solid.

by beisenberg

Uncle Vito's is one of the few reliable pizza restaurant options in downtown SF. Pies always arrive hot and on time, and the salads are interesting enough to keep ordering unlike most pizza joints. The pasta selection is surprisingly good, and the service is excellent. This place is both our corporate order choice after trying and being let down by several others as well as a nice place to go with friends for a pint and some good, well priced Italian food.

Pros: Quality, Inexpensive, On time

Great pizza, great service!

by asllc

Our company has a corporate account at Uncle Vito's and the pizza and salads get regular raves.

I go to Uncle Vito's on my own at least once a week and love the food. Not a hi-tone spot, just good pizza and cold beer.

Pros: pizza, delivery

Two words...Fettuccine Sienna!
Let me put it this way, I am more than willing to park three blocks away and walk uphill in the rain for this dish. You get the picture.

P.S. I hear the pizza has addictive qualities too.

Pros: Consistent good food, decent neighborhood, Affordable

Cons: Limited seating

Downtown Pizza at its Best

by Dilasf

Delicious! On a whim, we jumped off the Cable Car and stepped into the warm aromas of this corner pizzeria. What a treat. There was a little bit of a wait but well worth it. Our server gave us just enough time to get cozy and then helped us through the menu. I highly recommend the Mountain. Unlce Vito's favorite and mine. Now thats a Pizza.

Pros: Cool location, Inexpensive, Yummy pizza

Cons: Slight wait

Fabulous!!

by jv99gretzky

I first experienced Uncle Vito's in 1983 on my first visit to S.F. When I lived here, I was a block from the place. It was pizza and beer every Friday night. Now, every time I go to S.F., I never miss a chance to enjoy the great food at reasonable prices. Everthing is great, the pizza, the pasta and those sandwiches. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. It will always be my favorite pizza place.

Pros: Great Food, Inexpensive, Friendly

Feather in My Cap for Using Uncle Vito's

by cgutro

I ordered a bunch of pizza and salad for a noontime workplace lunch in the Financial District and it was delivered on time and was delicious! The salads were fresh and crisp and the pizza was excellent! Everyone commented on the great sauce he used, the great crust and the delicous toppings (the sausage got special kudos) - I found it on Citysearch - used them because they rated a 10 - and it turned out to be a real feather in my cap!

Pros: On-time Delivery, Delicious Sauce, Good Value

Yummy Pizza!

by KarahDrake

I love Uncle Vito's, not only is the pizza awesome but the Itilian food is great as well. Do not expect a full service bar there or even a nice glass of wine with your meal, they only have a select few beers and the wine is not so good.
