Hoover Senior High School is a school that proves that if the staff is dedicated to their job, ANY school can be successful. For many years, Hoover Senior High School was looked at as a very troubled Senior High School. They were at the ?bottom? of the list in just about every category. From academics to crime, the school was all in all in really bad shape. The school managed to succeed, despite it?s large size (over 2,000 students), and it?s population (over 90% minority and nearly 100% qualify for free or reduced price lunch programs) due solely in fact to it?s teachers and staff who wanted more for their school and their students. They took the right steps towards improving their school by taking the weaknesses of the students, combining them with the schools strengths, and giving the school an almost 180 degree turn around. While the school still deals with crime, fights, and other common place Senior High School happenings, they have really managed to succeed as a whole. The counselors at this school are outstanding. I would never have the ?guts? to be a counselor at Hoover Senior High School, because they have to deal with so much on a day to day basis, due to the makeup of the students at this school, but the counselors not only do their jobs, but they are dedicated 100% to their jobs, and they won?t stop doing their jobs until every student at this school succeeds, at least that?s the way they make it seem. This school has brought back a lot of things from ?days past? that worked, like silent reading time, tutoring, art, music, and even shop classes. Some of these classes have been taken out of some schools, and they really don?t give kids, especially troubled kids, a chance to express their creativity, and succeed. I commend Hoover Senior High School on the turn around that they have made. And if you have a student who is Senior High School age, they would be lucky to attend Hoover Senior High School, they will be exposed to a top notch block style education, as well as the ?basics? that English learner students need to survive in the United States in the ?real world? after they graduate high school.

PROS: Great staff of counselors, the school that struggles to succeed
CONS: Tough location and makeup of students

It's definitely a diverse school with all ethnicities. There's more than 2,000 students. Kind of crowded if you ask me. But the school is big enough, I guess. However, there should be more parking for students to drive to school. But it's a very local school for many students, which does not require driving. Academics are okay. Average scores. Hoover has some good sports teams for students. What concerns me most about the school is that it is not in the safest neighborhoods. It's right next to city heights, which has the highest crime rate in San Diego. But it's a nice good in general.

PROS: Diverse, Sports
CONS: Not so good neighborhood, Average School
