I instructed in the club from '79 to'85. We had several accidents, but if memory serves, only one was fatal--4 killed after crashing on an airport against the S Cal mountains at night during a rain storm. It was a flight that we should have not have let depart.

There was increasing demands for revenues with accompanying decreases in our safety margin, and this resulted in the board firing the management.

The drive for income (growth), large size, and many different aircraft types is a recipe for accidents. You can'trun a flying club or FBO like a rental car agency, and have a great safety record. To maintain safety, you have to intimately know the capabilities of your pilots, set high standards (not the minimum), and be willing to occasionally intervene and say "No"--but then people will be upset with you and accuse you of operating a little nanny state. This is way better though than ever having a single bad accident in your club--and way cheaper too.

After having flown with WVFC for a few years I feel ripped off. As soon as you come in the door they see the dollar sign written all over your face, that's who you are to them. They see you as some dumb somewhat rich person willing to waste a lot of money just to have a buzz. The dream of learning how to fly? They don't believe in dreams, they believe in dough.
Lots of smuggy people around the club that think that they are too special.

The Club and most of the instructors are OK, but some has problem with attitude. I was flying with Patty Andrews. Nice girl, but she believes that people above 40, are not really comfortable with flying. ??They just got money to realize a dream from childhood?. I was flying under her instructions ~50 hours before I realized that we spend the time with straight- and level flight to and back Livermore. She was faking for me a lot of flying without entrusting me actions on my own. Trala-la, trala-la? I was too precious and solid student pilot to get anywhere with her (in the air). I left after 4 months and 10.000$, and I still feel as an idiot?

Business / profit reasons seem often to be put ahead of safety concerns at West Valley. And there seems plenty of internal strife. WVFC calls itself and is supposed to be a non-profit, but in many ways operates like a for profit enterprise. It provides sales awards for its managers / sales people. Many new customers get quickly signed up, but drop out some relatively short time later. A recent job advertisement on Craig??s List for a ??membership sales?? person, required the skill to ??be able to sell snow to an Eskimo?. (Good for management, but perhaps not so good for the Eskimos?).

Their safety record was questionable. West Valley had 6 aircarft accidents in 2009 and 5 years of increases in accidents.

Pros: Pros: Large selection of mostly older aircraft

Cons: Cons: Too many safety problems & too much internal strife

Club was a major letdown even after years as member. Collection department at WVFC should be especially paid attention to if you venture to join. Be careful of turn over rate of instructors who say they have a job only too show up again six months later at a cost too member who is left holding the bag. Then your told by the next instructor, "I have to see where your flying is at", never
mind you hold a commercial rating. Beware of chief CFI double talk probably due to excessive inavailability. Beware of instructors S.K, D.K, C.T and D.F. of course wish I could really speak my mind about WVFC supposedly non profit org!

bureaucratic is absolutely right. also watch out for hypomanic has-been dpe's like 'gomer' pyle who will -- despite every encouraging sporty's dvd you ever watched to the contrary -- look for any minuscule borderline doublespeak interpretive excuse to disqualify you after cashing your check in advance! avoid stepping in the stinking, unethical, steaming pyle at wvfc. i just found out that i'm FAR from the first, and wvfc apparently just lets this loose cannon roll all over the deck, blasting holes in its own hull. you've been warned! sadly, like any whistle blowers, we must post anonymously or risk institutional retaliation.

West Valley has a lot of airplanes but has the reputation of having more than its share of technical problems and accidents relative to its peers at the PAO. Aircraft generally not as meticulously maintained as Stanford Flying Club. Do have many good instructors, but club system is bureaucratic and often a pain to deal with.
