EDITED: The incredible magazine selection is no more! The incredible depth of back-list books is no more! All that is left is a garishly painted tourist trap trading on the nostalgia for a mythical hippie past. This place is obviously catering to the tourist trade. The only thing the same is that it is still hard to park! Serious readers need not apply.

I leave my original review so that people can see what they've missed;
This great independent bookstore is stuffed full of books on a wide variety of subjects. With their wide selection of titles I can always find myself an armful of books when I visit. One of the best things about them is their wonderful series of free 'Author Events' featuring great literary authors (Milosz, Vollmann, Chabon, Auster, Ondaatje, Lethem, and bunches of others) interspersed with rock stars (Neil Young wrote a book?) and politicians (George McGovern - how cool is that!). From their homemade signs (they have a Staff Artist) to their imaginative displays (Altered States, anyone?) this store encapsulates everything that is wonderful about Independent Bookstores.

PROS: Great Signed Books
CONS: Hard to Park!

I can't believe how great this bookstore is. I can find everything I want at great prices. They have a wide variety for everyone. Also for those who like to meet their favorite write, this bookstore is a must visit. Also their staff knows just about every question you can throw at them, very helpeful.

The Booksmith is a great place, to find well known writers, during there book signings, and niche books. The bookstore offers a wide range of topics, and seems very well stocked. The staff is manageable, although they seem on a short leach on time sometimes. If your into meeting your fav writers, check out there web site, for the latest dates for a booking signing.

The Booksmith is a quirky as the neighborhood as it resides in. It is a huge store with a wonderful variety of books and audotapes. It is a successful independently owned which is a large feat to accomplish in san Francisco. They also have wonderful book signing of wold famous authors. Even though the lines are large, it is well worth it. It is understandable that these authors cannot talk to one person for a long time because they have to see everyone. I think its a great bookstore.. The service is pretty good too. The salespeople always suggest something great to read. A great asset to the City of San Francisco.

The Booksmith is the best independent bookstore in San Francisco. It's been in business at the same location (in the Haight Ashbury district) since 1976 and manages a thriving business when other independents are, unfortunately, being forced to close their doors right and left. The store is able to maintain a large inventory, which is one of the keys to its success, and also carries a large selection of audio books. Public events such as book readings and signings. Thanks to its great location and reputation, the store draws world class authors to its events. They maintain a blog publicizing book events, so be sure to check out their website.

PROS: Big selection of books and audio books, lots of public events
CONS: None

This book store has your typical selection of reading materials, but the service staff are rude and less then helpful. I have attempted to shop there on a number of occasions and always end up feeling like an idiot. They do have a good program where they get good writers for signings occasionally, but the lines are often outrageous for good authors and they really don't do a lot of lecturing, just signing.
