The oldest Italian restaurant in America! If nothing this place deserves 5 stars for remaining as an institution. But that should not mean the food is mediocre. Far from that, I've had the best veal dishes (marsala & picatta) and home made pastas at this place. Service is professional yet friendly.
I got to meet Chef Gianni during my last dinner who gave us some great wine recommendations.
Place is decorated with some of the greatest b/w pictures from the early 1900's reflecting the history of San Francisco and that era.
Fior d'Italia is definitely on top of my list for authentic Italian food!

Fior D'Italia was fabulous! The decor is beautiful and the staff is friendly and welcoming, makes you feel like home. The food is one of the best italian I've eaten, I loved the cheese tortellini that was served before the main dish. I had a filet migon, it was tasty, cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. My husband had veal and loved it. We can't wait to go back again.

First, the Fior d?Italia made us a great offer. For an additional $6 they let you turn your entree into a four course Italian feast. They gave us soup, salad and dessert for $6. Wow. Even without that our experience at Fior d?Italia was the best ever. Our waitress was so professional and helpful. Service was extraordinary and the food superb! What a great night that reminds you of what dining and service used to be in San Francisco. Too many times now we have been disappointed with ?yuppie? food and a server who wants only to be our friend- ?hi I?m Sally I?ll be taking care of you tonight?. Sound familiar? The Fior is real they really do take care of you. The best in SF in our opinion.

The food was below average at best. Wait staff was slow, slow, slow!
Calimari was rubber like, lasagna seemed right out of the frozen food section of your grocery store and served luke warm. This was the only place I was charged a 2% fee to subsidize their health insurance costs??? whats up with that! The waiter showed me the menu that explains this "fee" on your bill.
I would not recomend this restaurant.

Stopped by with no reservation on a Sunday night. We were dressed way too casual for this place (shorts and flip flops) so we asked to sit out front which they gladly allowed. It was a really nice night. Service out front was a little slow and I found myself constantly searching for the waiter, but when he was around his service was excellent. The table top was filthy and I would not let the silverware touch it. We started with a Caesar salad for two which was good, but unimpressive. I feel like I've had better Caesars at a chain like Carrabba's. I had a pasta dish with a pesto sauce which was good, but with so much sauce I felt like I was eating soup towards the bottom of the bowl. My companion had the fettuccine with meat sauce which was good even if it reminded me of Chef Boyardee. The food tasted good and was definitely fresh, but when I saw the $50 check for our meal I realized I would not be back. Considering we had two salads and a bowl of pasta and water to drink, I can hardly justify $25 each.

My wife & I went there based on tour guide recommendation, and had a wonderful dinner of authentic Italian cuisine. I had the lasagna which was succulent and not microwaved like some chain restaurants, and my wife had the fettucine al bolognese. At $15 ea/ and 2 salads and bread, we were full for $70 incl tax & tip. We had 7:30 reservations but were there 1/2 hour early & got a nice window seat, no problem. But at 7:30, patrons were lined up at the door, so make the reservation. Waiters wore tuxes (ours had 25 yrs' there), but I was not uncomfortable in Dockers shorts & polo shirt on a Sat. night. Higher end menu items did appear quite pricey (maybe norm for SanFran), but looked very good from what I could see. The place was very clean, and romantic, but I'm not sure I'd take little kids there. 2 blocks from Muni bus ride. Much better I suspect than the touristy North Beach row of garlic-heavy cliche Italian places.

Fior is one of the best. My great grandfather first worked there when he came over from Italy and we havent stopped goin since. The food is great, but the atmosphere in the new resturant is not as nice as the old one (which is now dimaggios) but its still nice. One bad thing is that the valet is terrible and expenisve at the same time. i wouldnt mind paying $14 for valet when you recieve you car ontime and dont see the valet guy driving it around! In all its great!

I had one of the greatest dining experiences at the Fior. I finally got a chance to eat at the new location since the fire and I was amazed how they were able to maintain almost (except for the location) everything the same. You don't get that professional service and treatment everyday these days. And when you top that with an impeccible menu, you know you are in good hands. Can't wait till the next time I go there!

We have been to the Fior d' Italia's new location (6th building I believe) several times. Talk about a classic. It is so much nicer tha the last location that got kinda old and worn out. The "new" place is very attractive and romantic. Got to be one of the best in the city.

Food and service on each visit were spectacular. If you want real traditional Italian the Fior d' Italia is the place to be. The restaurant claims to make (according to our waiter Lalo) all there sauces and most of the pastas in house. On our latest visit we started with the calamari, then had caesar salad and four great entree's; pepper steak, veal saltibocca, osso bucco and lamb chops. Too good! We ere full but Lalo bought us a tiramisu to share. We bought another.

Can't say enough about the restaurant. Locals love it and it should be required for visitors to the city.

I moved here from Boston a year ago and am still looking for somewhere that beats the North End!
I was not impressed by the food. I found it very bland. My husbands veal was tough and not very good. There are definatley better Italian restaurants in the area.
They do have a good wine list and a knowledgeable staff!

This place is fantastic. Don't listen to the other critics, it must have been an off day. The place is EXPENSIVE, but it is worth it for a special date. I had the 55 dollar sampler, the appetizers were yummy. Chilled crab, fantastic fresh tomato, tasteless mozarella, and fantastic prosciutto. next came the caesar salad, yummy, nothing too fancy. the pasta was great though. 3 kinds, marinara, pesto (so creamy fabulous!) and some white cream ravioli, light alfredo i believe? finally, the meat course, 3 kinds, veal, steak, salmon, all were fantastic

Took my family and had a wonderful time. Mateo was our waiter and was wonderful. Had a Caesar that was great. Fried calamari was real good even tho I read here it wasn't. They get it fresh from the East coast. My kids ate the tortellini. The wife's Halibut and my veal was fabulous. We had never tried Pumpkin ravioli and tho rich, was a treat. I liked the chef, Jonny, who came to the table to check out how we liked it. Recomend trying the booths in the dining room. If you like osso bucco, and comfort food, this is the place. We'll go back.

My 2 friends and I went over the weekend to this restaurant thinking it was a really classy place and instead had the worst experience ever. The server ignored us for the majority of the time, and when he actually came to our table he was incredibly rude. The food didn't taste good. The caesar salad tasted like miracle whip mayonnaise. Even the "manager" was really rude! Tommy Lasorda may be a fan but I think Denny's has better service.

I agree with the last reviewer who said the calamari was inedible. By far it was the worst I've ever had. We ate a few bites of the calamari and never finished the rest. One of the chefs came out and said, "You didn't like the calamari"? I told him it tasted like rubber. He told my friend and I that we " . . . must not have had calamari before", and walked off in a huff. I've also always thought that its pretty hard to screw up pasta. They succeed in making it awful. On top of the terrible food, the bartender apparently thought he was doing us a huge favor by serving us drinks. Take it from a North Beach local - this place is truly awful.

Went to this restaurant for lunch last Sunday. I always passed by and was curious. In short, this is the worst Italian food I have EVER eaten. The calamari was inedible. Im not even sure it was calamari. I had gnocchi. It was terrible. It was mushy and the sauce tasted like spaghetti-os. My friends had pasta and both were unhappy. Even the iced tea was bad. All this and ridiculously high prices = steer clear, way clear.

It is always a relief to be waited on by a professional, as opposed to some philosophy-major college ditz who wishes they got that record store job. The waitstaff is so attentive, and our experience has always been so personalized. And the food! The pumpkin-stuffed ravioli is inspired, if sometimes a bit rich. The linguini tutto mare is hard to beat. The lasagne is usually ordered by our teen-age daughter, and she is a very picky eater in fancy restaurants. The house Merlot is better than most other Italian eateries. Don't go to sit in the front of the house unless you don't mind the noise and you just want to watch things go by (this is best done later in the evening). This is like eating in someone's well-apportioned living room with their uncle from Tuscany as your waiter.

After wandering the steets of San Fran trying to find the perfect restaurant, we found it when we stumbled into Fior d'Italia. The food was incredible - definitely try the chicken and veal cannaloni - and the service was great and also entertaining. I'd recommend making a reservation if possible because the main dining room fills up rather quickly. But, if you have to wait, it's well worth it!

I'm surprised at a few of these harsh critiques. My boyfriend, who was born in Italy and lived there for 20 years, loves this place. This is his favorite Italian restaurant, which reminds him of mamma's cooking (and damn she's good). The lasagna is to die for, and many of the pastas are homemade! None of this fake Olive Garden garbage! It's a warm environment with a beautiful wooden bar..... molto buono!
