i've sent each of my three children to sherwood montessori consistently since october 2009. in the 3 1/2 years that my kids have attended sherwood (my oldest started there at age 2 and is now in kindergarten and my twins are almost 3), i've been more than pleased with the quality of academics, care, and nurturing they have received. the staff is extremely caring, patient, and respectful of my children, me, and my parenting philosophy in relation to their teaching philosophy. moreover, with students and teachers hailing from numerous countries, i'm particularly drawn to the multicultural aspect of the school. i highly recommend sherwood montessori.

Sherwood Montessori school is a charming little preschool, safely tucked away behind the weekend events center of a prominent Santa Barbara church. On-site parking couldn't be better, & there is no chance of traffic or criminal activity nearby. Sherwood has three classrooms, a rolling lawn with trees, a cute barn-lunch room & a very large sand play area. The property is fenced all around & quiet.
Sherwood's director, Thushari Kandamby, is properly trained in the Montessori Method (attended a Montessori college) & has a true love of children. She's quick-witted & capable, warm & polite, & has an excellent work ethic. I've noticed the school seems always neat as a pin. Thushari applies the Montessori lessons correctly & gets exceptional results from the children. She's been in Santa Barbara nearly 20 years & literally hundreds of satisfied parents give her a 5 star positiive review.

I enrolled my toddler expecting to have a great experience, but I was wrong, sooo very wrong. There are too many issues to begin with. The director is hot headed and unprofessional. She's harsh with parents and doesn't believe in maintaining good relationships. She's constantly "complaining" to the parents that she's working hard to take care of their kids. I mean isn't that why the she is running the school, to take care of the kids in the first place? And it's not like she's doing any charity here either when she's charging for her services. Also, the teachers rarely stay here long which is understandable giving her dictatorial nature. I'm very unhappy about the whole experience here. It's very clear from the reviews here that the negative reviews were more helpful than the positive ones. Do I need to say more?

I was referred to Sherwood by one of my co-workers 3 years ago. What a wonderful 3 years it had been for both my son and our family. Not only he blossomed academically, surpassing many of his friends, he is now enjoying him self in kindergarten to the fullest. I am very thankful to the wonderful and knowledgeable staff for an excellent job VERY WELL done. With gratitude, I highly recommend Sherwood Montessori school.

We had our daughter at Sherwood Montessori for a year, and it was a wonderful experience. What a treasure it is! The director and teachers are wonderful and insightful to the various needs of each child. Unfortunately, due to a change in our family situation, we decided to change schools this year. I am sad to leave Sherwood Montessori and would highly recommend it to any family looking for a great preschool experience.

My daughter began attending Sherwood in January 2005. She is one of the youngest kids there, but has learned TONS in the last five months. They are relatively affordable and have good extended hours for us working parents. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They have a good understanding of the Montessori method, and also spend time teaching the kids manners/civilized behavior. And they do yoga with the children! My daughter taught me a new yoga pose this morning while we were getting dressed. Amazing.
Things to improve:
Communication is occasionally lacking, partly because some of the staff are non-native English speakers and I have difficulty understanding them. They are also somewhat inflexible.
The school does take a Christmas, spring, and summer break which can be hard on working parents (hard to find short-term care in this town)
Edited to add: this school ended up not being right for our daughter - after a year we have moved her to a new school. The rigidity of some of the teachers, combined with the multiple-week breaks, caused her and us to be too unhappy with it. This may be the right school for many children, butnot for ours.

PROS: small, caring, friendly, affordable
CONS: difficult personalities, many school breaks, poor communication
