camp surf was fun, but i didn't learn too much. i learned more at the i.b. school of surf! they are professional surfers that actually live in imperial beach. after a few classes with them, i actually was able to make it out to the outside and surf on my own. i felt like i really learned something at the i.b. school of surf, where as camp surf was just a good time.

My kids and several neighbors travelled from DC to attend YMCA Camp Surf. The kids all loved the experience and are going back this year.

Here is why they liked it:
1. They were on the beach every single day. They woke up at 6 and did the group run. They surfed. They swam and played on the beach. Great outdoor activities all day long.
2. The view. The camp is located right on the beach. It is really beautiful. The view from the eating area is hard to beat.
3. They met counselors and campers from all over the world. Many of the counselors are from Australia. My daughter met her best friend from Spain. They still talk every week.

Why did I like it?
1. Staff was very accessible. I had concerns about security. I talked at length to several people at camp to learn about the safety procedures. In the end, I felt like my kids were in very good hands.
2. Price - the price was right.
3. My kids have been to camps in NC and WI. This was the first time that they wanted to go back to the same camp the next summer.

I recommend this camp for kids with ages between 11-13.

This is a fun camp to go to, but don't expect to be surfing on your own after it is through! The pricing isn't much more than other camps though so I still think it is a good deal and you do learn some of the basics of surfing that most people who have never surfed before will appreciate!

PROS: Fun staff, you do learn quite a bit
CONS: you won't be surfing on your own right away!

Camp Surf is a fun surf themed camp. Don?t expect to spend all your time in the water at this camp however. In addition to surfing, they teach respect for the water. You participate in boogie boarding, arts and crafts, and take field trips to various places in San Diego. They also encourage personal reflection in addition to respect for nature. You learn to respect the ocean, its wildlife, and the environment you are in through their camp program. The instructors are superb, excellent surfers who know how to teach surfing to even children with no sense of balance who have no idea how to stand on a surfboard. If you are an experienced surfer, than this camp is not for you, but if you have never been taught how to surf, and always wanted to learn how, you really need to check out this surf camp. The prices are rather affordable, compared to other surf camps in the area, and the instructors are very patient with beginners, something that other surf camps in the area lack. If you are ready to hit the open waves at the end of the surf camp, they can even recommend the best place to go to get your first board, and let you know all of the gear that you will need for riding the waves.

PROS: A good place to learn the "ropes" of surfing
CONS: Not for experienced surfers, expensive

For a surf camp, you really don't do as much surfing as you might think. It's pretty much the same activities as every other camp with only a little surfing on the side. I would not recommend this camp to any kids who actually want to learn to surf.
