Life skills

My son started taking karate at Dawn Barnes Karate Kids 2 years ago and it has become a very important part of our weekly routine.

I researched many karate schools on the Westside but found the "life skills," principals taught at Dawn Barnes to be head and shoulders above the rest. The students are expected to show respect to their Sensei, their fellow students and outside of the dojo as well.

Staff members from check-in to Sensei, treat every student, (and their families), with kindness and respect. The front desk staff know every student by name and the Sensei??s remember class to class, where the student needs work, how to motivate each students specifically and they often take time in between classes if a parent has questions or concerns.

The facility is immaculate and obviously designed with parents in mind. Tables and chairs surround the glassed in dojo, enabling parents to see their child??s progress, visit with other parents or work on their laptops using the wireless internet service provided.

Hard work is rewarded with stripes and belts but the real reward for my son has been learning and applying one particular life skill; "always try your best," in the dojo and in life!

* Pros: Too many to mention
* Cons: None

Dawn Barnes has created a wonderful program for teaching children not only karate skills, but life skills as well. Children learn to show good respect, how to focus, and how to feel good about themselves. The instructors are terrific.

Dawn Barnes Karate Kids is now on Wilshire in Santa Monica but they continue to teach excellent skills to their students. Dawn Barnes has developed a very positive program for all kids. Fantastic instructors, pricey for martial arts.

This karate "club" has been wonderful for our daughter. This club does work with the kids on karate skills, but it also works with the on perfecting their character...which is what shotokan karate actually aims for as well.

Love it!

PROS: the instructors are awesome!!!
CONS: a bit pricey

I can't say enough about how much our daughter loves going to her Lions class at Dawn Barnes Karate Kids (the address above is incorrect-they are located at the corner of Wilshire and Berkeley 3105 Wilshire). The staff are extremely supportive, the Senseis all truly enjoy teaching children karate, and the school is inviting for parents.

Karate Kids uses Karate as a means to teach children about fitness, self confidence, personal growth, respect for themselves and others, and a host of other important things. Somehow the accomplish all of this without being preachy or high-pressure. Amazingly, the Senseis can keep a room full of 5-7 year olds fully engaged for an hour and half class.

A session at Karate Kids includes warm ups, fitness, Karate skills, challenges, meditation, games, and obstacle courses. Children are grouped by age and there are sessions daily for "Tiger Tots" (under 5), "Lions" (5-7) and "Dragons" (over age 7, and the "Black Belt Club" which goes up to mid teens.

I would recommend to any parent to bring their child to try out Karate Kids.

PROS: A fun place for kids to learn karate and much more
CONS:
