Been a member 8 years. Love the place. Great facilities, the quality of the classes varies with the instructors, but they have many excellent ones in spin, cardio, sculpting, core, pilates, and yoga. Most have at least 10 years experience. The focus is fitness rather than body building oriented weight lifting. Having said that, the weight training equipment is excellent.

This is not a young person pick-up scene. Mostly 40s+ married couples who keep to themselves if they do not know you, but are warm and friendly if they do. They have great programs for younger kids (2-10) that are free for members.

I like the new GM - he is young (as is much of the staff) but very accommodating. They care about the community, and get involved with a variety of community programs ranging from Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, to local schools. They hire local high school and college kids to work the desk and the cafe. They host several local charitable events per year.

I have never found the equipment or facilities to be dirty - although the spin cycles get lots of use and invariably some are occasionally in need of repair. They tend to replace them every 2-3 years, the other cardio equipment every 4 years, the weight equipment every 4-5 years. They donate much of the older equipment to the local schools.

The cafe is nice and reasonably priced. The pools are nice. The basketball courts are awesome. They have squash and racquetball courts too - no extra fees. They have discount ski passes in the winter available to members. They run basketball leagues year round, They have a swim team in the summer. The club is expensive, and they do have a waiting list (shorter right now). But while the parking lot is often full the club never seems crowded.

Other places are much cheaper. But if you use it often you get your monies worth. If you use the gym occasionally, or go to meet girls/guys in their 20s, or want a hard core weight training vibe, join elsewhere.

Dont waste your money or your time. The management acts as pretentious as the clients, (dont bother them with your issues, because they dont care, nor does the rest of the staff) while the equipment is dirty and often outdated. The atmosphere is not even condusive to working out as the clients are nearly all senior citizens, or Moms who mostly show up to socialize. I have no idea how the equipment gets so repulsively dirty.

This club, under the former general manager, could at one time have been considered the elite club in the eastbay. Now, under new incompitent management, things have changed for the worse.

The new general manager(who looks to be younger than my son) is extremely arrogant, and acts like a "know it all", while being oblivious to the problems surrounding him as he runs this once nice club into the ground. The atmosphere has changed, as the employees are much less welcoming than before. Maybe its a reflection of poor management, maybe the employees don't enjoy working there. But the atmosphere as a whole has definately changed. The cardio equipment is outdated, fitness manager is never there to answer for problems, management NEVER returns calls or takes responsibility, and the fee's keep increasing.

Overall, the product has gone down considerably, while the fee's keep rising annually. I have been a member for 6 years, and many of my friends have either cancelled their membership, or are in the process of cancelling their membership. I recomend club sport or 24hr in moraga over this place. You will get more mang for your buck.

I've been a member for only a few months. Oakwood is an impressive place almost overwhelming. It??s very busy; hosting an all encompassing array of programs and events designed to push everyone??s limits. The equipment appears to be relatively new and is reasonably well maintained especially when you consider the abuse these machines must endure. There will always be equipment problems at any club. I myself must confess I broke a pedal off a spin bike. For me, it was no big deal.

What really makes the club happen are the ??inside sales people? i.e. the instructors, personal trainers and other support staff. They are genuinely interested in making your life healthier. They deserve all the credit for getting my big old body into an exercise class. And during the class I may not follow exactly what the instructor is saying but who cares because at the end of the class I??m still totally exhausted and glad of it.

Oakwood is also more social than I ever expected. I??ve been very fortunate to meet some fantastic people. Sitting around in the cafe with my new friends after an exercise class is most enjoyable.

As a long-time member I have become dissatisfied with recent changes at Oakwood. It is a beautiful facility that is no longer well managed. My concerns include: inadequate maintenance of equipment; unclean locker rooms; dirty showers, dirty jacuzzi and swimming pool; inadequate hot water supply; rude employees; unresponsive management; dues that continue to rise on a regular basis; stress-inducing loud music and screaming instructors who fail to close workroom doors; lack of enforcement of privacy rules (i.e. no cell phone use in locker rooms).

This was a well-run facilitiy for many years. Sadly things have changed during the past year. With more professional and capable management this club could once more shine again.

I love working out at this gym. Its more like an oasis getaway than working out, everything is so clean, there are plenty of pieces of equipment to use and the ambiance is top notch. The classes are awesome, I especially love their yoga classes, but every class I have taken has been amazing. The spa services are also great and I love having them right in the gym, it makes it very convenient.

I've been a member since ground breaking and don't know what I would do without it. There's tons of equipment, so I never have to wait. The dance fitness, hip hop, and salsa classes are top notch! It's great they have these classes to chose from. The pool and outdoor spa are my own little country club in the nice weather. They really pay attention to detail when it comes to cleanliness! Bravo Oakwood!

I called June 2007 and they said they have a 15 month long waiting list and no summer or student specials. I heard the gym is amazing though... Better luck to you!!!

This club is really peaceful and nice. There's a pool, a great selection of classes, a spa, bathrooms with everything you need, lockers, hot tubs, saunas, and day care plus a little cafe inside the club. It's great.
