I've been a member of George Brown Fitness in Clovis since they first opened their doors.

Nice gym, nice people, nice location.

That's where the nice ends and the ugly starts.

I stopped going to the club in January 2012 and cancelled the card associated with the account.

When I received a bill on May 10th for Feb through May in the amount of $126.00, I called their office and asked why I was being billed.

They said the account was still open, and ALL charges were due.

I requested they requested they cancel the membership and waive the fees, but they declined stating: "How do we know you haven't been coming to the club the whole time"

Really?

So after years of being a loyal customer, George Brown Fitness shows their "true colors" by calling me a liar and making excuses about their "RULES".

George Brown Fitness gets a 1 STAR rating from me (I would give them ZERO, but CitySearch requires at least a 1 star rating.

Find another club to spend your money with, or better yet, try the P90X or Insanity workout at home like I did and put the $30 a month back in your pocket.

Palm and Ness location. When the gym opens (sometimes it opens late) the TVchannels are almost always changed to movie channels like TNT. This morning the gym was dirty, rubber bands, an empty water bottle, and a teeth cleaning tool were on the floor near the elliptical machines. There was powder on the floor in the free weights area, and the lockers were dirty. I saw this with a very quick look around. With so many people out of work I would think that they could afford to hire a supervisor for the night crews. When I go to the gym I get bored on the treadmill and elliptical machines. If I can catch up on morning news and sports it helps the time go by. When the gym is dirty and when it takes employess 30 min to change the channels its frustrating.

I love gyms, the exercise equipment, classes, swimming, and so on, and I think they are great for living a healthy, happy, long life. However, although I have looked at the gyms and considered them and have been members of some in the bay area, I have not joined one in Fresno for many years. And I have a comment as to why.

For once, I would like to find a gym that gives information on their website rather than lead you on to a page where they ask you for your information so they can bug you to death by phone, by spam, by visits, or whatever. I wish some of these companies had someone with an IQ over 30 who could understand that we are coming to them for information and not to give them our information. For that reason alone, again and again I have procrastinated joining a gym for years. Other times I have joined, but it bugs me to death when gyms lack the integrity to name their prices straight up rather than having some stupid goon run people through some idiotic used car salesman patter while pretending to be the nice guy. Cut the crap. Cut the manipulation. Put a bloody price tag on things up front, and don't expect some kind of "commitment". When we pay for a "commitment" how do we know YOU are committed? Do you expect everyone to be ignorant of the fact that these gyms go out of business or change their conditions? Is it fair that the new people get better deals that are closed to the old customers? Put a monthly or single day price tag that stays the same for everyone. Then those who don't know how to negotiate won't be swindled. And please, don't bother to make excuses saying this is somehow a better way of doing business. The word for that is "lying", and not only is it a lie, but it is a rather stupid one at that. Whatever it is, say what it is and be done with it. That way if people like the price and the produce and want to buy, they go into it with knowledge. The only purpose an initiation fee or a commitment serves is to give the company freedom to screw things up royally and give really bad service without fear of losing a guaranteed income. Then when they've got your money, they can even shut down or go bankrupt if they feel like it. But, you don't need a stupid, overzealous, smiley, swindling, manipulative goon to manipulate people into something if your product is worth having.

George Brown Sports Club is a great place to work out--reasonable rates, friendly staff, knowledgeable trainers, and quality facilities. They keep everything clean, and even as you work out you can see the janitorial staff constantly cleaning the equipment. Rather than get in the way they make you feel like you can trust that your machine isn't harboring some horrible germs. Their group fitness classes are taught by fabulous instructors and they offer all sorts of classes...step, interval training, yoga, pilates, cycling, etc. You can get a personal trainer to meet with you on site and give any sort of fitness or nutrition counsel, too. Another advantage is their childcare facilities on site...wonderful play equipment for kids and separate areas for older children and infants.
