I have been vegan for almost a year now and Whole Foods is the best resource for me. A one stop shop if I don't have time to get to all the farmers markets.

Pros: Has everything I need

Cons: can get expensive

This store is generally a real asset to the neighborhood. Admittedly, it is small, often crowded, has some stocking problems, and is somewhat understaffed lately. However, it's very convenient to downtown and much appreciated by those who live nearby.

A word to the wise, though: the catering department is a disaster. My employer used them 4 times for work-related functions, and they screwed up the order every single time! Each time the order was at least half an hour late, they got something wrong and/or miscalculated the price, the person who was supposedly in charge of the order was always "out," and no one behind the counter knew what to do. To top it off, the guy who "manages" the department is the pompous, condescending type to whom customer service does not come naturally, to put it mildly. After the third time they screwed up the order, I approached him directly, in person, to explain the situation and ask him to personally oversee the next catering order. First, he told me that I must be confusing them with a different Whole Foods, since they had "never" had a problem with any catering orders (!!) I ignored this, patiently explained what went wrong in the past, and decided to give it another shot since he said he would "personally oversee" the order. Sure enough, they screwed it up again last Thursday. Incredibly, when I called to talk to this guy afterwards, he claimed not to know anything about the order! Then, when I reminded who I was - and that he had agreed to personally oversee the order because of our past problems - his said he "was out that day" and didn't know what happened, but would reimburse me for the tea sandwiches (about one quarter of the order). When I asked him if he could guarantee that they would get it right in the future (we are planning three more functions in the next 6 weeks), he gave me - incredibly - the exact same line as before, that this was the "only time" they had ever made a mistake! When I said this wasn't very reassuring, since they had screwed up all four of our catering orders so far, he just said, "Well, I'm sorry but I can't guarantee anything" and got off the phone in a hurry. (I am guessing that this guy does not work on commission!)

Part of the problem could be that this particular store is in transition right now - they are "between" managers and the next one isn't starting until the end of March. Hopefully things will improve when the new manager takes over. But unless the new store manager identifies the problem and puts some competent (and service-oriened) people in charge of catering, we will definitely be taking our business elsewhere...

I have friends who refer to this place as "Whole Paycheck" -- because you could spend a lot of money here. I used to live across the street, and it was very tempting to buy all my groceries right next door, but it's so much cheaper to go to Safeway.

That said, you get what you pay for (usually); this place has a great selection of cheeses, meats, fish... Their bakery does some amazingly decadent pastries, and their produce is always top notch.

Their thing is that they don't sell anything with artificial additives. Great plan, but it meant we couldn't find any soda for my diabetic dad to drink while we were there; even the stuff that was "diet" still had sugars of some sort in it. It also means you won't find some staples of bachelorhood cooking here, either -- no Kraft Mac & Cheese dinners, no Lucky Charms cereals, etc...

But if you're looking for something with culinary quality, this is a great place to go. And if you just need a quick Ben & Jerry's fix, they do stock most of their flavors (most of the flavors are all-natural, and hence, fit the "rule")...

PROS: High quality foodstuffs
CONS: Prices match the quality, few mass-market products.

Like the fresh food and organic food selection there. The prices are on the high side but not to far off of what you can get at Safeway. Don;t shop at safway anymore since found the whole foods.

PROS: Large Organic selection
CONS: Higher cost

Whole Foods is a very good market for premium/organic/health food. They also have good unsalted tortilla chips. Sometimes they put out samples of their fruits to try. Downside? It's expensive to shop there.

PROS: good food, samples
CONS: expensive

This is the first Whole Foods Market that I knew about in the area, and my first trip here was like finding a little slice of heaven. The store has a great a variety of organic and vegetarian products.

Whole Foods offers a wide variety of organic, natural, and healthy foods. Most of their stores get a high KidScore for amenities like family restrooms...
