I've read a few reviews and thought I give this place a try. The selection was okay. Nothing I couldn't find on the internet without some effort. Definitely more places around L.A. with better selection, but this place is more around home. Service was very patronizing even though i was the only person in the store at the times. My questions seemed unimportant and stupid to the clerk. I won't be going back and don't think anyone should. I was shocked by the service i was treated with and left with disgust. Adorable shop. But the people there aren't worth associating with. Especially with a newcomer.

Cons: meager selection, service,

This shop in sweet and historical South Pasadena is worth the drive, or just take the metro and stop at the Mission exit on the Gold Line.
Excellent foreign films selection.

This place has all the new domestic and international releases, plus many ancient classics you can't find anywhere else. The owner lives upstairs, so it's very non-corporate, and the staff is knowledgable about under-the-radar cult films. Get a "cine-phile" membership, all movies are rented for 3 days and you get a discount when you pay for the first three films upfront.

With the arrival of Netflix, video stores are becoming a thing of the past. Blockbuster stock is bottoming out, and I can't even name any other video store chains anymore... So what a delight when I moved to the "Lexus liberal" community of South Pasadena and discovered this absolute gem of a store. It is dvd "boutique," and if you can't differentiate between a movie and a film, you're in the wrong place. But...

Need a little help breaking down your choices on French crime noir? Wanna get dialed in on the top 3 Argentinian comedies of all time? Perhaps you've been desperate to know where that one Korean director has gone since the millenium? This is the place.

The staff is deeply knowledgable (if at times a bit too cool), and if film is your thing, stroll on over. They stay open late too, and with a great coffee shop/ice cream parlor across the street, I almost feel like I can live without Silverlake. Until Netflix takes it all away, that is.

Located in South Pasadenas Mission Street historic district right next to the Yellow Line metro station, Chi La-La is a chic sophisticated boutique. The store offers a bright, fresh line of clothing along with jewelry designed by owner Liza Shtromberg who is more widely known as a jewelry designer favored by stars like Mena Suvari and Gwen Stefani.

My first impression of this video store was that I could throw a dart and be content to rent whatever it hit. The staff hand pick the store's films with such care that the crap is already filtered out! At most video stores it's an effort just to find SOMETHING interesting, but here it takes effort to decide which great film to take home because we're presented with a plethora of intriguing choices. Films are organized by television series, directors, foreign films and their country of origin, and genre. There's a great documentary section situated next to staff picks that range from sagacious to hilarious! The staff at Videotheque are wonderful. One staffer even drives out from Claremont once a week because it's that much fun to hang out at Videotheque! It's a joy just to go in and visit with this team of people, plus Mission Street is a great area to visit. So, drive out, get a movie, have some coffee at Buster's and enjoy yourself.

PROS: Staff, no crap to weed through on shelves, located in great area.
CONS: It's not around the corner, but WELL worth the drive.

Wow, what a great selection in this little store. Some areas are organized by director or subject, which is nice. They also have a good (but small) kids' selection.

Mostly DVDs, with an emphasis on cinephile, classic and international titles. I saw most of the Criterion Collection available for rent.

Given that the other choices in the area are Blockbuster and Hollywood (and that's in Pasadena), any film fan in the SG Valley needs to check this place out.

Note: they don't have a sign up in front yet, so you need to look for them. It's across the street from Busters, a great coffee place.
