We lived here 20 years ago and this was such a classy bookstore with many many classics for children. I would recommend them 100 times over a chain store

Its Christmas and there are many last minute shoppers.People who wait to the last minute and those who dont have money till the last minute to purchase Christmas gifts. I was the later. I and My son are regular customers at this store and they have always been so helpful and nice. But not this time, the lady was very rude and very upset when I called to see if I could find out which books out of the Six I ordered yesterday would be in the following day.The lady that helped me the day before was supose to write on the order slip which books would be in the next day, but she had forgotten in the rush of mad christmas shoppers. It was no problem for me for I thought it would be ok to call the Mendocino
Book Store and ask them. But the lady I talked to was very unwilling to help and made this simple question out to be a big ordeal while sighing and huffing. She said that she could not find out when the books would be in. I knew they had computers they ordered on, so I asked if thier computer were able to tell them. She said ..No they cant and all the paperwork from yesterday has already gone to the back of the store and there was no way to find out. Than she asked me what time I was in the store yesterday. But I told her its ok, I know they are busy and stressed from the christmas rush and not to bother. She just kept huffing and sighing. I was really shocked and somewhat hurt to hear her talking to me in such a harsh voice. This store has never been so rude before. I again told her its ok and i am sorry that I bothered her and that I would check another book store and see if they could help me.She than proceeded to get angry with me and said..You know that when you order from us you are expected to purchase the books from us. She said this very harshly like I was a criminal. I didnt comment on her statement but knew that in the past I had been told that if I changed my mind on a book that we special ordered, it was no problem if we canceled, because they would just put the book on the shelf and it would sell no problem. There were a couple times in the past that I had had to cancel my order because of being given the same book as a gift from family or friends. I remember calling, and the book lady being very nice and saying..oh its no problem, we can just put it on the shelf and it will sell to someone else. So when this other lady told me that when you order from us you are expected to purchase the books from us and you are not allowed to cancel, I was very shocked. After that I did not want to talk to her any longer and told her once again to not worry about it and I am sorry that I bothered you and to have a very merry christmas and I hung up the phone. Well, she called me back and said we were cut off, and I told her no I said goodbye and merry christmas. She than went a head and told me which books would come in tomorrow and which books would come in next week. And than asked ...Does that make you happy now? I didnt know what to say, but I was thinking...Why couldnt you have just told me this in the beginning when I first called instead of going through this big long ordeal. I was so upset that I didnt even get her name. I wished I would have. I really hope that this was Christmas help and not the regular employees that have always been so nice in the past. If this is the way this book store is going to treat us from now on, I will go get my books else where. I dont like being afraid to ask a question and wonder if I am going to get an employee that is so angry. All that I asked is if I could check which books that I ordered would be in tomorrow, since they forgot to write it down on the paper.I would think the answer to that question would be...Sure, no problem, hold on a couple minutes and I will check for you, ok. At least that is how I would want my business to be run.
