Cafe Stella is little bit of Paris tucked behind the red walls of historic Sunset Junction. Lunch specials include sandwiches, salads, and our signature brunch is complete with champagne cocktails. The evening meal may include a l'assiette of imported meats and cheeses and French classics like Sole Meuniere or Steak au Poivre. Once described as Silver Lake's best kept secret, Cafe Stella is unique in Los Angeles; the neighborhood joint turned gourmet.

The Scene
Hidden away off a courtyard, this tiny wood-paneled storefront holds just six tables--a dozen more reside in the dimly lit courtyard. The French waiters are so friendly you won't mind when they confuse your order.

The Food
Old-line Gallic fare is making a comeback on Los Angeles' left bank. Stella's one-page menu is heavy on cream and butter, butter, butter. Escargot hide in a pool of garlicky white-wine sauce, and French onion soup is a decadent molten mass of bread and cheese. Entrees are even more criminal: Steak au poivre is smothered in a green-peppercorn cream sauce and the lamb chops are blanketed in a piquant Dijon sauce. Save room for a heavily armored creme brulee or a silky pot de chocolat.

Key Points

  • Historic Building.
  • Wine Bar
  • Secluded outdoor patio

The Inside Scoop

  1. Parking - There's a free parking lot behind Stella off of Sanborn. It's big enough to accommodate most diners.
  2. The Extras - Trade in the French bistro feel for red lighting and a towering Buddha--it's just a short walk over to 4100 Bar.
  3. Know Before You Go - Service is impossibly slow and chaotically disorganized. Reservations are strongly recommended.
