Everything about Tortilla Flats, from the earth-tone walls decorated with antique pottery to the luscious desserts is the creation of owner Cheryl Marquez. Inspired by the French and Mexican cuisines of New Orleans while living in the French Quarter, Cheryl blends the fieriness of Mexico with the sophistication of the French sauces, the earthiness of the Yucatan and the complexity of Santa Fe with all the freshness and lightness that Californians expect. With a variety of chilies, from the rare Peruvian aji to the well-known jalapeno, Cheryl creates tastes that are truly unique. And yes, we do have rice and beans--wonderful nutty long grain brown rice and no-animal-fat beans.

I love The Flats!

by Joshua S.

Tortilla Flats is by far my favorite place in town! I've been going to the flats since I was a kid, and I have gotten just about everything on the menu. The chicken mole, enchiladas, tostada, margaritas, and banana cream pie are all my favorites.
The price is fair, and I definitely recommend Tortilla Flats to all my friends. Tips to other customers - go on Tapas night - it's a great deal!

World class restaurant

by Anonymous

I was visiting Soquel and my sister-in-law took me to Tortilla Flats, and let me tell you it was a treat! The atmosphere is inviting with more of a South American decor. The menu is intriguing with fresh seafood dishes, along with more traditional mexican fare. The margaritas are to die for! The service was friendly and helpful, especially considering the menu choices. I'd definitely go back

Ole Mole! event going on now at Tortilla Flats

by Anonymous

Starting December 10 going on until the 17th, Tortilla Flats will be holding their Ole Mole! event. Owner Cheryl Marquez has researched and prepared the moles in the traditional way. Using all fresh ingredients and letting the sauces take their time to develop, she has prepared a range of moles rarely seen in American restaurants. Great tapas

by Tanner G.

I ate at tortilla flats the other day and just loved the tapas!! For those of you who don't know what tapas are, they are small dishes, like appetizers usually accompanied by wine. I finally found a restaurant in the Santa Cruz area with great tapas. Combine the good food with the amazing atmosphere, especially the artwork from all over the world, makes for a great experience. Check out their website at www.tortillaflatsdining.com for information about their menu, location, and special events.

a delightful evening in santa cruz

I ate at tortilla flats yesterday and was just amazed by the flavor and presentation of the dishes. My friends said the Margaritas were outstanding but I don't drink so I couldn't say anything about that. The general ambience of the restaurant made the experience complete.

Not That Good

by dinoutgirl

Went there on a Friday night. The place was completely crowded.
We sat at the counter and were waited on immediately from the bartender.
We ordered Margaritas. They arrived over the rocks BUT we do not like them that way and he never asked us how we wanted them blended or over the rocks?? With a smile he changed them to blended drinks, which were very good.
Our food order came quickly. We ordered enchilada and chili relleno. The pork enchillada was great but not enough sauce. The relleno was so hot I immediately started to cough but there was no water at the table. How frustrating! After flagging down the waitress we got water finally.
Our waitress never asked us how our meal was?
Finally I must say that I would not go back for mexican food at Tortilla Flats, which is much better many other places.

Nice Work

by al_wallace_open

Service was excellent. I inspected the place the next day and found it to be extremely satisfactory.

The technician did a great job without any supervision.

by matur

My friend had a dinner with his family at Tortilla Flats and he suggested me, to have a dinner at that place. When I entered I saw at walls, it was decorated with antique pottery. The artwork on the walls was just stunning and about Food it was just amazing especially Mexican. Service provided by the authority was commendable. I have decided next time I will take my family at Tortilla Flats.

The One & Only Tortilla Flats!

by sandyweb33

If you have not tried Tortilla Flats in Soquel, CA you are in for a treat! Try any special on their list and you will get consistently delicious food. Sample their tapas or usual menu items and you will be just as content. Take the whole family there, including the "picky" kids and grandmother and everyone will leave saying they can't wait to return. The wine list is impressive for a small restaurant and the margaritas are yummy!

Pros: Any dish/wine/margaritas/tapas

Cons: sometimes a wait to get in

Not your average taqueria

by johnlankin12

When I was going to Tortilla Flats I envisioned just some average taqueria. Once I entered the door at that instant I realized that it was anything but your average taqueria. The artwork on the walls was just stunning. I sat at the bar and chatted with the bartender (who was very interesting to talk to and was a genuine character) while I ate some tasty tapas, and drinking a margarita. By the end of the night, I would say that I was a very satisfied customer and will return soon.

Pros: Food, general atmosphere

Ole Mole! event at tortilla flats in santa cruz, california

by jjlang

Definitely the most consistent restaurant in the Soquel/Santa Cruz area. I went during their "Ole Mole!" event and was delighted with the flavors of my mole prueba (A five chile mole in the puebla style Complex and spicy to hot. Served with chunks of beef brisket.) I recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area.

Pros: Great food, ambience, and I love all of their occasional events

Not Authentic Mexican food!

by silverpalette

Tortilla Flats in Santa Cruz. 8/1/07

What I noticed first about this restaurant was some newspaper articles on the window. I felt good about that. The restaurant had a pleasant feel to it. Beautiful colored pottery lined the shelves and wall. It was small and clean. A good sign. There were 5 of us and the busboy immediately arranged for our table. Upon being seated the waiter arrived with some chips and salsa. The chips were crispy, tasteless, and had an awful after taste that resembled cheap oil. I started to worry. To me an indication of a great Mexican restaurant is their chips and salsa. I noticed people at our table started pouring salt over the chips. Comments were being made. The chips are terrible. We ordered our drinks and someone at the table ordered a margarita. It was small and resembled a child?s sundae dish. We all laughed!
The food was nothing to brag about. I ordered the chile rellenos. I was anticipating a fluffy relleno, like the menu stated, but instead I received a flat greasy cheesy relleno with a sauce smothered on top that taste like stewed tomatoes with canned chiles. It was horrible! I ordered a side of corn tortilla to help with the oil and what I got were two dried tortillas barely warm between to small plates. The rice wasn?t what I was expecting, dark colored over powered with cumin and extremely dry. The beans taste like canned refried beans topped with sauce to cover the canned taste. Menu stated full order with meal. It was small portioned. The only person happy with their meal was my husband. He ordered one mole enchillad with rice and beans. He said the mole was very good, but would not drive out of his way to eat there again. No, one truly enjoyed their food. I was very disappointed and wish we would of stayed in town and eaten at El Palomino on Pacific Ave, we have eaten there several times and know the food and margarita?s are good, but wanted to try something different .

Pros: Friendly waiter, clean and comfortable setting

Cons: Not Authentic, chips are tasteless

Nice atmosphere, very cozy, romantic little gem. Excellent salsa. Margarita was dissapointing. Not sure if this is actually owned by Mexicans, all the servers were white.

Pros: ambiance

Cons: margaritas dissappointing

best mexican food and margaritas

by santacruzlocal

i eat here at least twice a week, and i always make sure to come for their weekly tapas specials on either monday or tuesday night (not only a great deal, but also really good--tapas are those small spanish dishes). the classic margarita is out of this world and they also have events from time to time. make sure to try the moles as you can't find this stuff in any other place around town. btw, saw they have a new website (tortillaflatsdining. com)
--local j.

Pros: great seating, fun bar, parking

Cons: tapas specials are only available only on monday and tuesday

mexican with a french twist

by izants

Don't expect the same old enchilada. A wide variety of sauces all to die for and the mole is authentic. Try the original margs. served in gorgous glasses. Desserts are special too. My favorite the lemon blossom cheesecake. If your a veggy try the signature flatland

Pros: fresh food, great service
