We were doing the tourist thing on the wharf and I was tasting the clam chowder offerings that most all of the restaurants hawk up and down the wharf. I thought Gilbert's (the restaurant, not the market) was the best of the group, so we we went in.\n\nWe weren't looking for food, but it happened to be happy hour so we sat at the bar and ordered a couple of drinks. The calamari appetizer was only $2 w/ drinks during happy hour so we added it on (the chowder was not a happy hour offering).\n\nThe bartender poured a couple of `healthy' drinks and brought us the calamari right away. As we were enjoying our calamari the bartender overheard my remark to the person seated next to me on the results of my clam chowder taste test. Within a minute or so he brought me a bowl 'on the house'!\n\nIt was late afternoon and we didn't stay for dinner, but I can attest to the friendliness of the bar staff, the great clam chowder and the fried calamari appetizer.\n

I had an exceptional clam chowder in a bread bowl here for lunch today..It was served to me hot and fast! I had it with a cold beer and it was perfect!

It was very disappointing to hear from my parents, that what should've been a wonderful weekend spent with their grandchildren included a very unsatisfactory customer service on Gilbert's part. Our family has been coming to Gilberts for years, and for the past several years, my parents have done a weekend trip to Monterey with their grandchildren which included a stop at Gilberts. Without fail! However, my parents were very distraught that their server Erika, on Saturday Aug 25 '07 did not even bother to exert ANY kind of customer service to them. Who took their drinks? An apologetic busgirl. Who followed up on their order? No one. Who followed up if they had drinks? No one. And Erika had the audacity to tell my parents that it was a busy night? There is absolutely no reason for that excuse and it is even more appalling that their wait staff would even say that to the guests. I am hoping that Erika's unprofessional behavior does not put a cloud on Gilberts, however, based on a very poor experience that my parents encountered over the weekend, it will definitely be a note to remember when recommending places to eat at Monterey. As a customer, I would sincerely hope that the management would take an extra effort in educating their wait staff in regards to customer service. To say that we will not be having a meal at Gilberts again is definitely an understatement!

We just tried Gilbert's for the first time last night and all 12 of us loved it! Being the off season, there wasn't a crowd and we got a great table looking out onto the harbor. The prices are really reasonable for seafood in Monterey... for the most part from $10-$20 with most dishes sitting in the $12-$16 range. Gilbert came to our table periodically to check up on us, our drinks were never empty, and everyone loved their meals. Don't forget to look them up online to get a free appetizer coupon. Ours got us some wonderful fried calamari!
