I'm dying from laughter-- pay no attention to "gofins." Wood floors? Rats? How ignorant do you have to be?

For one, ice rinks do not have wood floors under their surfaces-- that's absolutely ridiculous. There are no broken windows, and even if there is a "broken window in the back"-- the entire back is FENCED OFF from the back street.

And where are these imaginary r@ts and why has Iceland been around FIFTY years without any sort of health establishment shutting them down? Yeah, r@ts sure do explain the "A" health grade hanging in the Ice Age Cafe.

By the way, cash receipts are not required-- what does the IRS have to do with that? I've requested one once and they were happy to write one out, but what's the point when you get your admission sticker as proof.

Honestly, bitter and misinformed people are laughable. Take it from a regular, this place is no immaculate architectural masterpiece, but it is homey, family-oriented, safe, warm, and accommodating, and that's all a paying customer needs.

What's up with these reviews? Sounds like a bunch of personal problems.
I love this place, it's definitely a hidden gem amongst a wasteland of shady rinks. The area is less lower class than than the burbank rink, but way better than panorama's. And redeeming it is the government status of the neighborhood-- police stations, court houses, etc. Feels a lot safer, and definitely much more friendly than other dumps.
Yeah, the rink is smaller, but who's to say that's a bad thing? I like the "personal" factor. Most people do. Honestly, who walks into a million year old rink and expects the Ritz? Can't get past those people.

Anyway, I completely recommend it. Check it out and make the decision yourself.
Cheers

The ice itself: The wood floors are exposed because the ice is so thin, the ice itself is always under some kind of repair, the window in the back of the rink is broken with a plastic cover over it. It is one of the smallest rinks I have ever been to. Not well kept up at all. Next the viewing area if you like r@ts yes I said r@ts this is the place to be; they roam around where you are sitting near the Iceland Cafe (nice); the seating in uncomfortable and you have to beg the owner to turn on the cheap heaters, the glass i never cleaned so it is hard to see your skater enjoy their time oh and the reasons the r@ts like the place so well is because it is like a maze to get through it no signs to lead you anywhere. Lets now move on to the bathrooms DISGUSTING!!!!! You are requested to not put anything in the toilet (YUCK!!!!), no ventalation and poop smell.
Couldn't tell you about the food because I won't eat in places that welcome wild rats. Lastly the customer service the one owner and his son are so rude it is obvious the only care about 1 thing and that is you money coming out of their pocket, I have never felt so unwelcome in a place of business in my life Rude is putting it mildly. Oh and it you pay cash you don't get a receipt (huh I wonder if the IRS would be interested in that?) My suggestion find a better rink to go to it is not as if you will pay more since their small rink is the same admission as larger rinks in the ares.

Pros: The coaches are friendly

Cons: Everything else and I mean everything

I have nothing positive to say about this place. The building is in the process of collapsing while the ice is too thin & ice maintenance is poor. Customer service is terrible specially the manager, Mr. Oleg who does not care what so ever about this place or the customers. Terrible, Terrible Terrible. Parents with kids please be aware the ice is in terrible shape & ice maintains is very poor. SHtt hole & rat hole is the only way I can describe this place.

Where to begin? Alright, let's start with the horrible sanitation conditions; one word: RATS. In all my time at the rink I've seen 3 and heard of maybe 10 more. I used to work at this rink, and I know for a fact they put up rattraps at the end of the day (but to no avail). Number two: The complete lack of professional atmosphere. Customer service representatives have no problem cursing, joking, and being rude around customers. Three: THIS PLACE IS FALLING APART AT THE SEAMS. There's a broken window towards the back (can be seen from the actual rink) that is covered with a taped trash bag. I'm serious. Other than the obvious horrible flaws (The rink itself is TINY, The area is in the middle of the ghetto, and there are dozens of laws being broken on a daily basis), this place is overflowing with negative ambiance and flimsy service. Opt to go to some of the larger ice rinks in the area (They're MUCH larger, and MUCH more worth the extra 15 minutes of driving). Iceland is a trainwreck. If I could, I wouldn't even give it one star.

I hate to be so old-school at heart but I can no longer deny my love for the vintage! Iceland is everything an ice rink should be-- homey, family-oriented, and a true hidden gem. If you can take a second to get past the outer appearance & get your nose out of the air, it's tons of fun.

A fellow reviewer made a comment about the ice being so thin the "wood shows through," and I'd just like to add that this would be a quite impossible feat, considering there is nothing but steel pipes under the ice. As a regular patron and a parent to one of the students enrolled in classes, I can also assure you, there are no rats, the food is good (It's just a snack bar-- it's fine), and as for the bathrooms...

The ladies restroom is nice, it's small-ish but at least it's not a single restroom like others have, and yes it smells but we can hardly blame the establishment itself for that. Especially considering the fact that YES, this is a kid's place, children generally have pretty terrible hygiene and occasionally "forget" to flush. We all know this much.

Also, I don't know what this is about the owner being rude. He is the sweetest man ever! He donates the bumper cars to our school's PTA events every year FOR FREE, this would usually be a 2,000$ ordeal, and he's the one losing money with the employees he's paying to man the ride.

And as someone whose child is a part of the Kids Sports Foundation here (it's a nonprofit you go through for discounted lessons), I can assure you, a man that starts a nonprofit organization to help low-income families, is anything but rude or any sort of pejorative.

This place is very nice. The staff members are very welcoming and helpful. The ice rink is in good shape. It is both affordable and nice. Which is great on the pocket. The cafe has a variety of food so you can come and spend a couple of hours there without needing to leave to go eat somewhere.

The place is good if you want to have fun for a couple of hours, for an affordable price. Plus if you are interested on something more than a just fun, you can take lessons on hockey, or figure skating. The teachers are really good. There is even a clase for adults.

This is a very good place to skate.
Late night sessions are a blast. Never 2 crowded. They play very good music (TOP 40), and have the light show. If you are looking to organize a private party, that is the place. They are very very nice and organized.
I would highly recommend this place for fun, classes, excercises and.....

The Van Nuys Iceland is an older and well-rooted ice skating rink. Its a little on the small side but perfect for people learning how to skate and young children who would benefit from a more supervised environment. The owners take care of their rink and employees are always kind and patient. The classes offered at the rink are intimate and reasonably priced, with good instructors. It may not have the bells and whistles of newer rinks that are more comprehensive entertainment centers, but the general feel is very nice and friendly.

Very friendly enviroment, they make you feel right at home. This rink is very family oriented and makes you feel like a part of the family and not just another customer. They have great and affordable programs and have by far the most popular skating program in San Fernando Valley.
