Everyone was friendly from the front desk to the Dental Assistant to Dr. Sutherland. I was promised this office would be gentle yet thorough, and they were right. Prices were not much higher than others, and financing was comfortable. I'm looking forward to my next appointment, and that say alot for a person who fears Dental appoinments. Thank you for making feel at ease.

I wish I would have read the reviews first before taking my daughter and myself for an appt. here. We both went for check ups and a cleanings. They took digital pics of my teeth and 18 x-rays, the actual dentist never once looked in my mouth but rather looked at my teeth via the pics and x-rays on a computer monitor. He recommended that 4 of my silver fillings be replaced and for two other fillings to be watched. When the dentist was done a women came and took me to a little office to go over my treatment schedule. I almost choked on the $3,945.00 cost and told her flat out that this is not something I can even consider doing. She went on to advise me of payment options and even gave me a brochure for Capital One and told me I could easily finance it. The cost for the Cerec is $950 per tooth and the other $145 is my cost for the recommended deep scaling the dentist also recommends (but never told me about). Stunned I asked if my insurance covers any of this and she told me that I could get my fillings replaced by an alternate method that they don't like to do for $630 a tooth but then I would still have to pay lab fees etc. I thought I would at least have gotten my teeth cleaned while there but they did not do that. When the dentist saw my daughter it was basically the same thing. The treatment coordinator lady took her x-rays and used a camera probe to take pictures of her teeth and then cleaned them. It was she who recommended that 4 of her teeth that don't have cavities but rather "starting decay" have preventative restoration resin" done on them for $440. She advised the dentist what she recommends, he sat and looked at my daughters pictures of her teeth on the computer, also never actually once looked in her mouth and said yes, that sounds good and said thank you and with that got up an left. I asked the TC why it is so much cheaper to get a filling then it would be to do this and she said she doesn't really know about the prices. I said well if this is not really a cavity then maybe I should just see if it even turns into one first and she looked at me horrified that I would even think to do that but I went on to explain that the few fillings she had before were much less expensive then doing this. All in all the recommended services would cost me $4,385. I thought it was strange that the dentist I went to at the end of last year never once said I would have to have my fillings replaced, actually no other dentist has ever said that. I will never return to this dental office again and do not advise others to ever go there.

Take the time to read the other reviews! I went this week as one of my kids also had an appointment. I switched dentists as I now have dental insurance - and thought I could save some money on routine things. INSTEAD - they wasted an hour of my time and told me that I needed 7 replacment fillings - totalling $5810.00.
On the way home I called my old dentist, who saw me 2 days later. He confirmed that one of them could use a replacment - Total cost (no insurance) $245.00.
I think they seriously overcharge and oversell what is needed to fund the large amounts of "toys" for the dentist office - flat screen monitors in each chair, computers, "treament coordinators". It is such a shame that some customers won't know they don't need it.

I have had 3 out of our 5 family members come to this office. If I followed everything they want us to do, my bill would be close to 10,000.00!!!
All I wanted for my son was to get his wisdom teeth pulled and teeth cleaned. And my daughter had a cavity. I had a sore tooth which was a huge fiasco! First they prepped it so I could go get a root canal then sent me to another office for the root canal, then I came back and they said I would need a surgeon for the gums to be lowered so they could get the crown on. (The surgeon comes once a week, certain procedures are only on Tues. and Weds. You rarely see the actual Dr.) I said just pull it. At first the assistant argued that you don??t want to lose your tooth. Then the Dr. came in and said he was concerned that the crown wouldn't stay on so he said he would pull it. The $1340.00 I paid in advance was not given back. The Dr. said he could "Credit my account toward future work because all my other fillings could be taken out and exchanged for the Cerec. (These were perfectly good fillings.)How ever my root canal could not be reimbursed.
Nor could the un necessary pain of getting it be. He pulled the tooth but wanted to also give what??s called a bone graph. This would be an additional $250.00. It??s to help you keep from getting dry socket. I told him no. I will simply wash out my mouth after I eat like I have before. I have never had a problem when a tooth has been pulled before. They tried this with my son as well. To pull his 4 wisdom teeth the cost would be 125.00 each plus an additional 250.00 each for the bone graphing. Yes, the total for pulling 4 teeth, wide awake in office and all would be, $1500.00.I told them no bone graphing!
They were very disgusted with me but did as I requested. But not with out instilling fear that I would open him up to infection and if he gets an infection it can go to your heart and you can die from that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They really use fear to their patients. I heard them saying the same thing to other patients while I was waiting. Then my daughter was in and they refuse to do the pfm crown ok'd by my insurance company, saying it is a cheap crown and the dr. won't do it. (It??s a precious metal with porcelain)
They also left a message saying the Dr. really doesn't want to do the pfm crown, he prefers to do the cerec crown because she??s only 18.
I told her cerec is $950.00 each and you want her to have 3. Even though she has no pain, hot or cold sensitivity or anything. I??m still questioning if she really needs anything other then a basic filling anyway! They quoted me $950.00 for cerec or $545.00 for pfm crown. I questioned later why they want to charge me $545.00 for a crown my insurance says I should only pay $195.00 for. They said because they have a $200.00 "Lab fee" and a $150.00 build up fee. They will not honor the Delta Dental insurance policy I have that says I pay no lab fee. and no build up. They really want to sell you on the cerec. Everything they use including the medical information form when you first walk in is computerized. You will pay for all this fancy equipment. This is much more of a cosmetic dentistry then traditional. I remember my first appointment when I had to sit and listen to an inframercial with headphones about the wonders of Cerec Restoration. I should have run then! When I requested my x-rays they charged me 10.00 and they were photo copies, none of which was useful to the second dentist I went to.
I called my insurance about the crown for my daughter and the fact that they still want to charge me $545.00 when my insurance says I should only pay $195.00.The insurance co. has been trying to reach the office and they will not return phone calls. Delta dental says this office is not honoring their requirements to do procedures that are within the guidelines of our insurance. They have asked me to file a grievance. You better believe I will.

My son signed up for Ortho treatment here. On just about every visit they have made us wait for over an hour (after having pulled my son out of school early and taken time from work). The lower appliances were installed, and two days later all five of the brackets came off of the teeth, leaving him with a wire and five scratchy brackets flopping around inside his mouth. This happened on a Saturday and despite our repeated calls to their "after hours emergency number", no one EVER called us back. They told my wife on Monday that they didn't consider it an emergency - OK, but why not return our calls to at least tell us that? Three weeks later we got a return appointment to install replacement appliances and they made my wife and son sit again for over an hour and a half, only then to tell them that they didn't have him scheduled! This appointment was made face to face, in-person by my wife, and they claim to have no record of it! I went for a sensitive tooth myself a month or two ago and the Dentist told me I needed a Root Canal and a new Crown @ $1,400! Thankfully the entodontist they sent me to disagreed with them. There is nothing wrong with the tooth!!! Yes, you darn well better beware of this Dental Office.

I would not recommend this office. I have been a patient here for over one year, and I have to agree with the other reviewers. This office does good work, but (1) its prices are through the roof, (2) there is always mischief with the bill (you have to question EVERY charge) and (3) there is always a hard sell for additional procedures. Basically, by pushing lots and lots of procedures, the office puts its customers on the defensive. It's an unpleasant feeling.

Dr. Sutherland's office is a ripoff. The first time I went there they tried to make me think that I needed $3000.00 worth of dental work. When I tried to show them that my insurance covered most of the procedures they recommended, they gave me pitiful excuses for their creative accounting.
I did make an appointment for a deep cleaning/scaling a month after my exam. Their office called twp weeks later, needing to cancel the appointment. So I resceduled and it was canceled again. Then I resceduled again, show up to their office and they have no record of my appointment! I have been trying to get this procedure done for a year!!! Go to another dentist if you want your work done.

Why I loathe Dentist Sutherland's office:

Went in several months ago to get an exam and cleaning. Exam went fine, Dentist Sutherland seems nice enough I guess, then got ushered into the Treatment Coordinator's office. Now I have to ask, what qualifies this desk jockey to tell me what I do or don't need for my teeth.

Dentist recommends getting my wisdoms pulled, okay, sure. T.C. says it'll cost $87 total since insurance is picking up the bill. Said she would call insurance to double check and then call me back. Three months later, I had to call the office, speak to another desk jockey, who said they had the wrong insurance info - a small difference of only $800. So I rescheduled for a couple months later.

Call my insurance, they say I've been quoted incorrectly. Give the office my info, they say that since the wisdom tooth pulling is being done by an oral surgeon, he's considered a specialist. Office states that my insurance won't cover a specialist.

To the best of my verbatim skills:
"Your insurance only covers general dentists."
"So why dont you refer me to a general dentist who'll pull my teeth out"
"Well, no general dentist today does that, you have to go to a specialist."
"So your saying that I am stuck going to the oral surgeon, referred by your general dentist, who is down the hall in the same office from your gen. dentist, and pay over $800 for four teeth. Even though my insurance says $15 per tooth.
"Yes."
"Cancel my appt. and do not reschedule."

On my recent teeth cleaning appt., the treatment coordinator was not even there. I was led into the same office to speak to some recent high school grad who said I owed $125 that day for a cleaning that only cost me $40 six months ago. Because of their "professional courtesy" they comped me some services last time, (their words).

Several exits and returns later, this candy striper gives me the great news that the treatment coordinator would comp me those "other services as provided."

What insurance plan carries that as a benefit: "other services completed"?

Needless to say, I am not returning to that place. Dentist Sutherland needs to cut off any new patients until the old ones die or move away. It's nice that they put up a magazine article in the waiting room that says "Sutherland only works four days a week." Must be all the money extracted by those treatment coordinators.

Hey, I understand that dentists need someone to arrange finances. But unless they have been to dental school (not online) then they shouldn't be "coordinating" anything.

PROS: Nice magazines to take home
CONS: Treatment coordinators, long phone waits, treatment coordinators

I went to here once. The first time, they had me meet with a financial consultant to discuss the recommended treatment after Dr. Sutherland did my exam. She gave me an overview of what I should expect to spend. When I got the recommended services done, the payment they requested was $150 over what they quoted me. When I complained, they said they would reduce the price by $75 and that they were "doing me a favor" this time but that the cost for the next time would be the higher price. My husband then went for his first visit and had the same exact experience. Not to mention, they changed the name of the service they conducted to get more money from the insurance company then tried to charge him for "other medications" that were not used. When he complained, they did the same thing they did with me, reduced the cost (not by much) and said they were "doing him a favor". They also tried to charge him $200 for each tooth they were to extract when his insurance company said that they could only charge $25 per tooth. It's unfortunate because Dr. Sutherland seemed really nice. DON'T GO TO THIS DENTIST!!!!

PROS: Nice looking office (aesthetically)
CONS: Too many to list

I went to this dentist (Torrance Dental Arts) and informed me that I had 8 cavities, and my cost (after insurace) would be $650 to fill them. Since I have never had a cavity before in my life and my last dental appointment was only a year ago, I decided I needed a second opinion. The new dentist (recommended by a friend, but not on my insurance plan) found one cavity and told me the rest of the "cavities" were most likely tea stains on my teeth.

He also told me I did not need a deep scaling, which Torrance Dental Arts had recommended.

I also paid $20 for copies of my X-rays fromTorrance Dental Arts, but they were not of sufficient quality to be of use to the new dentist.

PROS:
CONS: Found cavities that didn't exist, recommended unnecesary work
