Not sure how recently Joe was there, but just this month a transporter went to deliver a dog there for rescue and left with the dog because the place was so disgusting. Everything the person below mentioned from tons of dogs to the overwhelming stench of feces to the place looking like a junk yard are all still true per this transporter's account.

The place should be investigated!!

I have done some volunteering here and there for this place and also donate items often. I actually adopted a dog from here back in 2007 and he has been awesome. I cannot say much about the practices of the past, but they seem to have really improved if some of the comments were indeed true. With all the bad reviews, I felt like this place at least deserves one that is more recent. First, the place is definitely SUPER old and outdated. It is something that without help from contractors, has the girls doing thier best to keep conditions safe, with what they have which is not much. Second, the majority of the business this place does is boarding for other rescue dogs. That is why they are always SO many dogs. I have yet to see these dozens of dozens of dogs being bred and sent all over. Who knows, maybe they are stashing them somewhere? And lastly, there may be some staff who may not have the patience with the dogs or best people skills that should be given, but every person I have interacted with truly loves these dogs and want only the best for them. It shows in their treatment and willingness to show up and do what most people just talk or complain about. I hope this place gets more support so it can do what it is meant to. Anyone can complain and turn their backs, it takes special people to DO something about it. So this review is not just speculation, I have interacted with Donmar an many occasion and can't help but feel compassion for them. They are doing the best they can. The kennels may be run down, the place smells (this is what happens when you have that many dogs), it seems crowded all the time, b/c people continue to dump their dogs daily, and the girls get impatient on occasion when they deal with such a great load each day, physically and emotionally. I will continue to support this place as long as it is standing. It really is improving each week as more and more people get involved to help.

I have lived very close from Donmar Kennels for 5 years. I am very curious as to what actually goes on inside the kennel. This is what I do know for sure:
1. I visited the kennel randomly one afternoon. I did not call ahead. I wanted to see if this was a place I could board my own dogs while on vacation. I was alarmed. 4 dogs to one approx 6 x4 area. Very crowded. An alarming amount of dogs. Would not leave my dogs there.
2. Lots of yelling on a daily basis: women's voices "get back in the yard." "Shut up!" "B****h!"
3. The smell of feces is incredible.
4. Dogs yelping, crying. My own dogs cringe when they hear this.
5. The view from the street reminds me of the hoarding show. Obvious signs of mental health issues, humane issues, animal rights issues and a business that may have started as a dog advocacy and rescue; but now is out of control.

Even the "praise" of Donmar is damning: 900 dogs a year!!!!!!!! I know of no legit rescue who could possibly adopt out that many dogs if they are doing even minimal screening to ensure the dogs go to good safe forever homes. That is shocking. What are they doing with all those dogs...?

Just want to rebut that disgruntled former employee who seems like sour grapes. Both my brother and I have adopted Whippet puppies, and we do not race them. They are pets. Further, friends of ours adopted 2 full grown Whippets from them that were rescued which are also pets. Recently, they took in numerous dogs saved from a horder in the Mojave desert. Moreover, they have adopted 900 rescues out this year which is remarkable. Finally-anybody who thinks they are making tons of money is crazy! This place is definately a labor of love.

I volunteered there. I was appalled. They were illegally euthanizing dogs left there that they didn't want to try adopting out -- only vets are licensed to euthanize (and they got their euthanizing needles from a crooked local vet). But the worst part is that they bury the dogs in their front yard. There are dozens. I witnesses a burial and it took them 3 digs to not uncover another dog... also, it is amazingly dirty which you can see yourself inside their grooming "salon" where the employees were paid sub-minimum wages (and in cash). Nothing, it seems, was done by the book here, and whereas I understand they could be considered doing "good" and therefore anything goes to "save dogs" that isn't the case here because these people breed whippets for racing and they make LOADS of money. The fact that they are a non-profit is only applicable because they list the address of all the breeding as being somewhere else. And they get free dog food by the pallet load which they then resell. And I could go on and on. I hope the animal control looks into this place with the information they were given. It is a disgrace to an already problem-plagued city.

I just got off the phone with Donmar. Although they profess to be a rescue, they refused to take a 2 y/o dog without her puppies. These puppies were already committed to go to another organization that was not able to take the mother. The puppies were old enough to be separated from the mother. Now I just needed to find a home for the poor momma dog that had been on the streets. I was even willing to pay for getting her neutered, and yet.... they said, "well why doesn't the other organization take the mother?" They refused to take in this poor dog because they were not going to get the puppies. What does that say about the real reason for their "rescue" organization.

We have taken our standard poodle to Don Mar for grooming for two and a half years, and we have been consistently pleased. At this point, we will not take her any where else. Their prices are far more reasonable than any other groomer in the area. A standard poodle requires a lot of work, but our bill is always under forty dollars. They are very knowledgeable and have a passion for animals. Recently, they cleaned and remodeled their foyer, and this has made the place more human-friendly. We have never boarded our dog, but if we had to, this would be my first choice. There are always cute puppies--they are breeders and do whippet rescue as well. Their passion for dogs is very clear. A great place!
