One thing that almost everyone can agree on, is that the coffee at Trieste is really good, even the foam is tasty! I used to have a latte every morning before breakfast, and let me tell you, I thought it was the best part of my morning! The employees are usually in a hurry because there's almost always a long line of caffeine-craving customers, so they can't always start up a conversation (if that's what you're looking for). I do admit though, the prices are a little high especially for lunch/dinner. The pastries are delicious, but try to get to them early in the morning before the good ones all run out!
great place to sit down and hang out, not so much for a romantic evening though. If you want a good cup of coffee, and don't mind that the employees don't talk you to death; Trieste is the place to go!

It is a lively place often with live music that makes for a fun place to hang out. Their coffee is quality and their baked good are very good.

Not the place for a quiet conversation, but a great place to people-watch!

Friendly and kind service. Nice coffee and good tea. Quiet place and somewhat of a neighboorhood secret.

You will not find a more beautiful, delicious cappuccino anywhere in the East Bay, not even at Peet's, and in fact I'm hard pressed to think of a place I've had a better one anywhere (ditto for the canolli -- I have never had better, so if they have it when you're there, snap one up). The coffee is delicious with a nice thick crema and the froth is dense. I have always found the service to be very friendly, contrary to what the other reviewer says. Seating is pleasant and comfortable, inside and out.

North Beach's famous Caffe Trieste would have been a welcome edition to the dirth of good coffee in West Berkeley, but getting a cup at the liquor store kitty corner to Trieste might actually serve you better. Bad service and attitude might be part of the package of a high end SF cafe, but it doesn't work in Berkeley. The majority of the baristas are slow, rude, and seem obviously unhappy to be there. There seems to be a lot of turnover, as the guy who told me it was an awful, temporary gig for him, and the guy who demanded a tip for a sandwich are both gone now. Prices are high: a sandwich will run about $8 for two pieces of bread, a little bit of meat, and a lot of condiments. If you can put up with pretentious, out of place attitudes and overpriced lattes, the coffee is at least good and there is ample seating indoors and outdoors.

PROS: Coffee
CONS: Everything Else
