I grew up in Long Beach. Happily, I lived there long enough to grow up and take myself (and my family and friends!) to Russell's Famous Hamburgers several times before they closed the Long Beach AND the Seal Beach locations. *sigh* Hands down, no blowing smoke, this is THE BEST BURGER I'VE EVER HAD! Luckily, there is still a location in Pasadena. Quaint, bustling, upscale but not uppity, near good parking (they validate, too!) and shopping, and always warm and inviting - Russell's is the kind of diner that makes you feel like it should be snowing outside because it's so cozy. The meat used for the burgers is almost "creamy" in its consistency. I know that sounds strange, but it's so tender and delicious. Freshly cooked to perfection on a crispy-edged bun, all the fixins you want. I like mine with cheddar, lettuce, tomato, 1000 Island dressing and tangy pickle... all wrapped in that neat paper wrapper on a white diner plate. Mmm sublime! Good prices, clean, surroundings, always excellent service (especially at the counter) and always consistently delicious. The pies are great, too, but the Russell's experience is ALL ABOUT THE BURGER! Go! Go now!

Pros: Best burgers EVER! Good beef barley soup and great pies, too!

Cons: That there aren't MORE locations still open! :(

I love a good basic breakfast. Ata Russels one can get some great foods in a lovely location, served by very wonderful servers! The prices are very reasonable and even if they weren't, I don't mind paying for good food and service. They even have pepper and salt mills on the table, which is what I use at home!!

PROS: Great Everything!

Russels is a good palce to go for comfort foods such as pot roast and chicken fried steak. The atmosphere inside is very warm and cozy. Their vegitibles are usually fresh. I have never had to wait for a table at lunch time and the staff is always really friendly.

Russells has good food at a reasonable price. I've eaten there many times, and found the service to be friendly and fast.

The menu, as all good diners is vast. It includes meatloaf and mashed potatoes or pot-roast, pork loin or chicken fingers, or fish and chips. They also have beer both in bottle and on tap.

Its never crowded, but its never empty either. The fact that you can sit down and eat immediately is a real plus.

Its not trendy, but it has charm. The ambience is right out of a Dashiel Hammet novel. - a good place to sit and write your film noir scripts. It could use a little movie mood music though.

PROS: Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, fast service, food reasonable
CONS: Could use some mood music

This is a diner-style restaurant that serves up great burgers and some pretty good soup and sandwich specials. The ambience is cozy and nostalgic, and you can sit here and eat by yourself with a newspaper (provided free in a community basket in the back of the restaurant) comfortably, or come with a group and it will be just as good. I think one of the best things about this place is their hash browns, though (you can substitute it for the fries on anything you order) -- they make it perfect (crispy on the top layer, but steaming hot and soft on the inside)!

PROS: burgers, hash browns
CONS: things other than burgers and sandwiches are so-so

The most juiciest, tastiest burger ever! The meat practically falls apart as the juice drips out because it's lean beef that's not held together by a lot of fat, just juicy flavor, and it is so, so worth it.

The sides aren't bad either. You can either have a serving of steak fries, or melt-in-your-mouth hash browns laced with cheddar cheese and red onions (my favorite).
