This is a truly amazing place!!! I trust them more than I trust my own doctors. I have a 2 month old puppy (my first dog ever) and he is always getting in trouble banging his head here and there when playing. Because he's my first dog I am an extremely overprotective mother who get really nervous when he's getting in trouble or acting like he's sick.... Im amazed as to how much patience and compassion Dr Mattu has for both my baby and me (I always ask A LOT of questions). He is gentle touch with him, they just met last week and my puppy is usually distrusting with new people but as soon as dr Mattu put my puppy on his hands my baby melted and was nothing but loving I was truly amazed at that! Dr Mattu even joked around "we must have known each other from a previous life." Today I called Dr Mattu extremely anxious because my puppy seemed lowed energy after a fall, dr Mattu squeezed me into his tight schedule himself and was kind enough to stay on the phone with me for a bit and calm me down. When I took my puppy there the dr was as always AMAZING and loving towards him and even carry him close and gave him kisses on his tiny head as a goodbye. My puppy is really lucky to have the most amazing dr on earth! Dr Mattu is extremely knowledgeable, trustworthy, kind, loving, caring and so gentle when handling my puppy and calming down my nerves as the extremely worry mom that I am. I am extremely please with the service in this hospital from the doctor to the receptionist... My baby sure gets well taken care of and spoiled at the same time! What more can we ask for? And the price? It's reasonable, today I had a phone consultation, emergency visit, medication all for around $70.00. In short, I LOVE IT here!!!!

I highly recommend Dr. Matu at Universary Veterinary Hospital. He is very experienced - not one of the "new graduate" types, but absolutely current with an amazing ability to diagnose even the most complicated situations. I trust him with our cat and dog "family members" in the same way I trust my own doctors. He is open to hear what we say and is a good listener who combines what we tell him with his clinical observations and knowledge.
I've seen many Vets and vet facilities as we've lived around the state and country. Some more high tech, some that specialize in surgery or other things, and it sometimes feels like when you go there every problem looks like a "nail" and whatever their specialty - the right "hammer". Not so at University Veterinary Hospital. They have the emergency diagnostic tools to get answers "right now" when time really counts, but this is truly a Family Practice, so your bill isn't loaded with the high overhead costs of, for example, a surgical specialty Veterinary Practice. I've never said vet bills were cheap, but my experiences at University Veterinary Hospital have been open, honest, and I've always felt comfortable with their explaination of what things will cost BEFORE they were performed. I've also felt comfortable being able to omit items or delay recommended procedures.

Lastly, I can't be more pleased with the compassion and understanding I feel when my pets are in need of help at UVH. Dr. Matu and the entire staff are animal lovers who understand the bonds we all have with our
pets. They understand and feel our pain, and share the weight of our toughest decisions, while still reveling in the joys only animal lovers can share.

University Veterinary Hospital is located on University Ave close to the freeway. Most people choose their vets based on proximity, because when your cat snarfs some string, you want to get that taken care of ASAP. If you're in the West Berkeley area, this is a very good facility for your pets. The vets and vet techs do seem to genuinely care about the animals, and the costs are not astronomical. University Vet also participates in the Berkeley low-cost spay/neuter program. I recently had a feral fixed there and he broke loose and nearly tore up their waiting room. I feel like I owe them some props for being great sports about that.
