My husband and I have been here at least weekly and really really like it! The price is great (it beats Cafe Graditute), and the food has ALWAYS been really good! Our favorite dishes are the pad thai, and pesto ravioli- very good! The waiters, waitresses, and cooks are really great and friendly, great service, great food, and great prices! Enjoy! :)

This has to be the one of the most disgusting places I have ever visted. It 's especially shocking since this is suppose to be a clean, vegan restaurant. I would have expected something like this from an omnivorous restaurant but not here. For the vegans out there, you might get an extra source of protein that is NOT entirely vegan. Considering that this is supposedly a holistic palce to eat, I was truly appaled and disgusted by the lack of cleanliness of this place. I would not have given it any stars if it weren't for the waitress who voided the bill. Do NOT even consider stepping foot in this dirty restaurant.

I used to eat at herbivore on a consistent basis- until i befriended a longtime server of the company. much to my horror he informed me that the company uses BEEF BROTH in ALL if not a majority of their sauces. He also told me that their fake chicken that i absolutely loved contained EGG! i am DISGUSTED and APPALLED that anyone would blatantly lie about the vegan-purity of their restaurant. thankfully i found their deserts at rainbow in the mission district for frighteningly cheap. how long had i been paying $7/slice for cake that sells in whole for $30? Unfortunately for me I absolutely trust this server and i will head his warning.

This is lazy cooking at its weakest. I went for lunch, ordered a "house made veggie burger". What I got was a mustard and condiment sandwich, with a tiny sliver of house-made veggie burger material. Then they added undercooked, greasy potatoes, seasoned with a few pathetic flecks of pepper and a huge, disgusting puddle of bottled ketchup. Now add a wilted, underdressed lettuce and lettuce salad, and the picture is almost complete. Don't forget about the indifferent space cadet of a waitress: "We don't put ketchup on our plates." Excuse me?

There's no excuse for this. Interesting, innovative vegetarian cooking can be delightful. This is cooking I'd be ashamed to feed to my kids.

Pros: Well designed space

Cons: Indifferent service, inattentive cooking

I love the food here. I cannot wait for the restaurant to open on Shattuck in Berkeley. I am a vegetarian...however I have brought non-vegan/vegetarians here. Even meat lovers and they loved this place. The waitress was very attentive. I have had no problems here the many times I've been. The portabello Mushroom burger is to die for!

Hey, once I even forgot that it was a vegan restaurant ... I've been to Herbivore several times and I really like it. I recommend the grilled tofu sandwich and the lasagna. The service has been sometimes wanting, but I find the waiters/waitresses all genuninely NICE, which makes up for gaps in service. It's a popular place, so I assume I'm not the only one who agrees. Also good smoothies! That being said, it lacks the stellar-overall quality to make it one of your favorites in the city, but it is very good ...

Pros: Good Vegan Food, friendly staff, a variety of food to suit different tastes

Cons: Not expensive, but not cheap

I've visited herbivore 3 times and enjoyed it the first two. I was willing to exchange consistent food and thoughtful service for an all-vegan menu until today, when I was served a soggy veggie burger accompanied by fries that were cold, greasy and tough (I don't know how you make potatoes tough, but I'll bet cooking them hours ahead of time will do it.). Worse, my dining companion ordered something described as noodles with wasabi. It arrived as a bowl of noodles drowning in a horrid green sauce with the consistency of marinara that reeked of cilantro. It tasted as evil as it looked. I mentioned it to the server when she returned 20 minutes later to clear, but she seemed to think I was expecting too much. Hey, I'm basically like a dog who'll eat anything meatless. The bar's not that high. This experience was just horrible.

Pros: Vegan, Diverse menu

Cons: Hit & miss food, Careless service

.

They have an amazing extensive vegan menu that even a meat eater can something that they'd enjoy at both locations. The restaurant is clean, the service is very good but the parking especially at the Valencia location can be tough to come by. Although that can be said of San Francisco in general.
The food is served in moderate portions but the price is moderate as well.

PROS: amazing tasty food
CONS: parking can be tough

Go Vegan! -for a day or as a life choice. This place will "show you how it's done!" I've been three times and decided to bring my parents when they visit. Herbivore have such a well rounded menu that no matter what your craving may be, you'll find what will satisfy it, without a doubt. I recommend the pesto tofu scramble or french toast for breakfast with a side of banana bread (one order includes 4 slices!). For the rest of the day go Itallian, Thai or hot sandwich! Do not forget the grilled corn and ask for Leah. She's a doll. She stays on her "P's & Q's".

Pros: delicious menu, albsolutely vegan, fast service

Cons: no artificial sweetne, drafty, stiff chairs

Wowsa is it nice to have a menu that is entirely vegan! I can eat ANYthing! Whee! The service is a little slow, but, you urban cats, is this so unusual for granola CA digs?! I think not. It's excellent comfort food, I don't feel bad for slouching, and I'm always happier when I leave. Good side-drink smoothies, devine salad dressing, and the most delicious vegan sandwiches this side of the IA City Co-op!

Pros: Huge Vegan Menu, No piddly portions, Near Osento

Cons: Slightly Pricey, Little Slow, VERY full belly

Thirty minutes later and still no garden salad with tofu, though we did see them sitting in the food prep area for 15 minutes while the cook looked at us, we looked at the salads, the cook looked at us, we looked at the salads--you get the idea. Not sure if a little passive aggressive dance was going on or if the staff really is that inept. The server lady kept saying any minute and looked anxiously at the salads that sure looked ready to us, but maybe we didn't look hungry enough to the cook. So we left and never looked back, and I imagine those two salads are still there along with the server lady looking at them.

Invariably, the reluctant, attitude-ey staff makes you feel like you are intruding somehow for ordering or inquiring why anyone hasn't attended to your table for 35 minutes. One server forgot my drink and didn't come back until I was finished with my meal and remarked, "oh, i'm sure you're over it by now." "Um, no."

I've been to Herbivore at least 5 times and have to say it's got to be one the best places to eat in the City! The food is delicious AND healthy AND cheap! I have to admit I'm partial to the Grilled Portobello and Eggplant Sandwiches. The broiled, seasoned fries they're paired up with are so flavorful they taste as good as (if not better) than the ones cooked in oil! The Service is excellent as well with friendly, attentive waiters. Parking (street) can be difficult on busy nights so plan accordingly.

We were reluctant to go to Herbivore because of the mixed reviews. We decided to try it out for ourselves and were pleasantly surprised. The service was friendly and fast enough. The menu is all vegan with a wide range of dishes. There were 6 of us ranging in age from infant to middle-agers. Our picky 13 year old loved the lentil soup and the smoothie. We had a veggie burger, kabobs, pasta dishes and salads. All were quite tasty and reasonably priced. I'm sorry to hear that some people had bad experiences there....We definitely will try it again. Try it for yourselves and form your own opinion.

This is definitely worth the money. Me and my partner went to the location on Hayes & Divisidero and it was great. We even splurged on the wonderful chocolate cake. All under $40. You can't beat that.

I've given this place a try a couple of times now and I haven't been satisfied yet. While the dishes are sort of imaginitive, it lacks spice and flavor. I guess it's great for people who like bland.
Plus it's really noisy and filled with granola parents who have children with bad manners.

Great ambience: very relaxed, friendly and NICE staff. Had a Veggie Shwarma on my first visit to the Divisadero location. The sandwich was spicy and garlicky--fairly one-dimensional. Though we didn't have dessert, this eatery seems like a good place to grab a cup of coffee and something sweet.

Having tried several vegetarian restaurants in the city I highly recommend Herbivore. IT has a wide variety of entrees and also non-alcoholic drinks. I've visited this restaurants several times and found the food very tasty with a creative blend ingredients and flavors.
Ive read some review and concerns about their service, but have never had issues with the service, but then again I only go the one on Divesadaro. I'll say I miss having a good desert here, the variety is limited and the presentation is not what Id expect from a good restaurant. Bottom line: Good value for money - Great taste and its Vegetarian

The absolute rudest wait staff - ever. I told one that I have a serious food allergy then she let me order something that contained this ingredient and didn't point it out to me! I was livid - and how can a place that's supposedly selling healthy food be so negligent? Anyway, food ranges from ho hum to good. Hideous ambiance, torturous chairs, and loud.

Herbivore: brought to you by the folks (Jay's Cheesesteaks, Burger Joint, Wash Quarters) who helped make Valencia an extension of Union St. is now helping gentrify the Western Addition, just like they did the Mission.

Sure the service is bad. But the real travesty is that at the only place you can feel reasonably secure that your asian noodles or curry will be free of shrimp paste or fish sauce, these same dishes taste like chef boy-r-dee rejects.

If you eat there, stay with the good sandwiches and mediterranean fair.

I've been to Herbivore on Valencia and the one on Divisadero - clearly, the latter is much better in terms of offering, service, ambience. I have been going to this Herbivore and would like to encourage others to do so!

The food is generally good.

Although they promptly seated us at our table and initially attended us like a school of monkeys attacking a banana boat, we waited for hours to receive our meal and even longer to pay to get out of this kevorkian nightmare. And, apparently, they believe that they are located somewhere in the middle of the Sahara Desert because they refused to refill our water glasses. In fact, they were the antithesis of WaterWorld.

I ate at Herbivore with no idea what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. The wait staff was mellow but definitely not deliquent. Our water was consistantly filled and when my coffee was cooler than I like, I was brought a new cup promptly. The portions were generous and the food was tasty, albeit fairly straightforward. I've only been a vegetarian for 6 months, so I'm not that familar with many other vegetarian or vegan restaurants, but I will definitely eat at Herbivore again. Great price, good food, pleasant atmosphere.

Ask how long a wait it is or you will be ignored!! We were a group of six and waited patiently for more than an hour while tables of 3 and four filled around us with people who had arrived after us! The rude waiters ignored us completley. They were totally oblivious and didnt make an effort at all. We excited about trying the food but ended up leaving in frustration. A little effort would have gone a long way.

The lentil loaf with beet dressing is one of the most satisfying dishes I've ever had at a restaurant, let alone a veggie one. I love the neighborhood vibe of the place, though it IS always way crowded, and some of the seating arrangements are downright bizarre. Go figure.
